Strange JR Download Using Latest Yosemite 10.10.2
« on: April 17, 2015, 01:46:20 pm »

Just went thru procedure to download .94 from the "Help" menu, dragged the MC Logo into the App folder and got the normal prompt window that JR was preparing the software for applications. However, the process never terminates and the screen freezes. This required a "force quit" and after rebooting MC was opened, checked under "Help" for updates, and low and behold MC reports its up to date 20.0.94 ! Question is, how is the latest software updating, if it never completes the "preparation to applications" (as scene in the prompt window) prior to forced shutdown. Obviously the system reboot accomplishes the upgrade, but the process is confused. Is this a Yosemite issue ?

Stranger yet, though I can go to "Finder" under "All My Files" and see previous MC Library Backup Zip files, I don't see the latest .90 or .94 MC dmg files listed. Further, when I look under "downloads" or "applications" in Finder, there's nothing there ? Any ideas where these folders are going ?

After a reboot the toolbars' "MC" logo is replaced by a large "?" Mark. Guess is "applications" does not recognize MC but when I click on the "?" MC still loads the latest version as mentioned above. Could it be MC is loaded from the disc image device but not from an applications folder ? I know, pretty confused !

Hmmm... Updating from within the OSX version might be borked.  Sounds like it tried to overwrite itself while it was still running.

Please download the latest version from this forum, as explained here on the troubleshooting guide, and reinstall it manually.

Sorry for the trouble. I'll try to test updating it the way you did later tonight and see if it is all messed up here too.

I assume you mean the ? icon on your Dock?  The applications on the Dock are "shortcuts" which just point to a particular place on disk.  You get the Question Mark icons when the Dock can no longer find the application you previously "pinned" in the same spot on disk.

It is possible that you'd previously run MC from the DMG file.  When installing OSX software, you ALWAYS need to drag the application off of the DMG onto your hard drive somewhere (the best place is usually the Applications folder).  You can run things off of the DMG, but it won't behave nicely, because when the DMG is dismounted (you reboot), then the disk is gone (like if you were running it off of a USB drive or something).

FWIW, I just tested the built-in updater, and it worked normally.  I did get a "file in use" error the first time I tried to drag it into the Applications folder, because MC sometimes takes a long time to shut down (this is true on Windows as well, though maybe not quite as long, as it has to do some final housekeeping to shut down the database and finish logging).

But, within a second or two it finished shutting down (the application is running indicator "dot" in the Dock disappeared) and then I was able to copy it over and it worked properly when launched.

I suspect either:

* You got a corrupt download (maybe on a flaky wifi connection), or
* You didn't copy it where you thought you did. You should just drag the MC icon within the mounted DMG onto the Applications icon right there in the same window:

Thanks Glynor.... I haven't had the time to retry. What's irritating is I have always used the simple drag to app with no problem. The previous .80 version began the endless prompt " preparing for applications". You are likely correct as it could not find ( build off) a file existing in the Finder location for applications. As I had mentioned I surprisingly found no files where they previously resided. Somewhere in the Yosemite upgrade and subsequent updates, things got corrupted. So question is how to proceed. Move my updated dmg library files to trash (safe place on an Apple), and download the presumably now stable .80 version and look for it in Finder for the install ? Will it overwrite previous .dmg ? Guess no harm in just trying.

Moved previous 19 and 20 versions to trash. Downloaded and installed latest .94 and was again unsuccessful dragging into the app folder as indicated above. The prompt window remains open, indicating it is preparing file for application. It never gets there. Within Finder MC is not mounted as device. Mac .94 dmg along with latest library zip files reside in Finder. When trying to open the disk image, the agreement page opens but  the MC icon is missing from the dmg window.  So it appears .94 version cannot exist on its own as an application, as it has nothing to build from ? I may have to start anew, could be I have unknowingly been working (updating from version 19) off the dmg disc image all along. Looks like I'm in a bind now, as when I try to go back and pull previous dmgs from trash and open them, no dice ! Where to start ?

^ Every now and then I've had something odd happen when I was trying to install from a DMG.  I've had a window pop up with "agree and disagree" buttons and then somehow I clicked somewhere and I couldn't find that window any more.  After that I was unable to open the DMG until I found that window.

If you're in the same situation, there are probably several ways to resolve it, but the easiest is to just reboot the Mac and try again.

The file you downloaded from JRiver should be a straight DMG file; it should NOT be a ZIP file.  Double clicking on the DMG should bring up the agree/disagree window and after you agree it should verify and mount the disk image (DMG file) and then a window should open like Glynor pasted in above with the MC icon and the Applications folder.  From there just dragging it to that same Applications folder in the same window should install it and you should be good to go.

Let us know how this goes for you.

Brian.

Every MC installer includes the full application (all drag-and-drop installers must be that way, the only way to do an upgrade is to run through an actual installer package file).

It sounds like something is corrupting your downloads. HFS+ (the OSX disk format) is a bag of hurt, so I'd probably guess disk corruption before anything else.  Read:

Ran disc unlity, repairs made including the OSX volume. Noticed one was change for "user" from 0 to 244 ( may have that reversed).

Placed previous disco image and .dmg downloads into trash. Downloaded latest .94 from Interact page, successful getting the .dmg  app window but the MC icon was missing. Could this now be a licensing issue ?

Re-did the above and this time the MC icon appears in the dmg/app window. Drag and verification went well, but once again the "preparing to copy to Applications" pop-up persists, never finishing. After 2 hrs of great access, I'm left to wonder how good things are if my MacMini on latest software is being corrupted from OSX ?

Two questions:

1.  Did this machine get upgraded to 10.10.X from a previous version of OSX like 10.9 or 10.8 or something?
2.  Can you install any other programs into Applications?  Try a simple application like Tag or something else you might use.

I've read of a number of people that have had trouble with Applications after upgrading to Yosemite (10.10.X) like this thread at the Apple forums and this article about it.

I can't imagine this is something specific to Media Center.  I think it has to be an Operating System issue.  Anything's possible, but that's my feeling.

Good luck to you,

Brian.

When moving to applications here, it's pretty quick. Are you running any anti-malware software or anything like that? Tried with Gatekeeper disabled (just in case)?

No. MC itself has nothing to do with how your computer views the DMG file.  It isn't even installed yet at that point, and certainly isn't running.

I think it has to be an Operating System issue.  Anything's possible, but that's my feeling.

Correct.  Something is all borked up on his computer if the DMG isn't opening or displaying correctly.  I'm not sure what it could possibly be.  But, if the disk repair found some errors, it is possible there was data loss on his disk, and his OS could be damaged.

Not sure, but it isn't an MC problem. The OS is messing up in some way.

Thanks everyone, I now know Yosemite builds have caused trouble within Applications. Wondered why I had NO folders residing within. After clearing up errors in disk utility, and downloading the recent 10.3, even a recovery boot is not possible, or is endlessly slow. OSX boots fine with normal startup. Pretty ugly ! I only had about 5 app folders in this dedicated Mini server.

As much as I hate to recommend it, a clean installation might be the way to go.  If you have recovery media for 10.9, that's what I would do.  If not, you should be able to use the recovery boot to clear the existing installation using Disk Utility.  From there you can reinstall 10.10 onto that newly clean disk and you should get a fresh running system.

Of course the big deal here is that this will ERASE your hard drive and everything on it, so make sure you have backups of anything you might want from the drive before you decide to take this step.

Again, good luck to you.

Sorry to butt into this thread, but what is the best resolution for this?

I have a ? appearing in my dock which reverts to the MC Center icon when I click on the ?

I am somewhat loathe to go changing things too much, though, because MC Center now perform beautifully and integrates seamlessly with JRemote.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

I am running Yosemite 10.10.3 and MC Center 20.0.64

A question mark in the dock normally means that the Dock can't find the program that it's referencing.  This is normally caused when you run a program from a DMG file directly.  What you *should* do with a program in a DMG file, is to drag that program to your Applications folder.  Once it copies over, you close and eject the DMG.  Then you run the program directly from Applications.

If you run it from the DMG, the system won't be able to find it next time you log out, or reboot the system, as the DMG will close.  Then the program that was on the DMG is "gone" as far as the Mac is concerned.

JRiver Media Center is distributed in a DMG, like many good software applications are.  Just do what I said above and drag MC into the Applications folder from the DMG you downloaded and you should be good to go.

Yes.  The ? icon on the dock means the application is missing.  The most common cause of this is just as described above.  However, trying to be helpful, if you click on a ? icon in the Dock, it looks in your Applications directory (where it should have been, but wasn't) and tries to find an application with the same name.

If it finds one, it launches it.  But, it does NOT "re-pin" the new location (I guess being the idea that sometimes you might want to have an app on a removable disk and switch back and forth or something).  In any case, this will "work" as described above:

I have a ? appearing in my dock which reverts to the MC Center icon when I click on the ?

You can use these ? icons to launch applications, if they are really installed correctly and just linked to the dock incorrectly.  While the application is running, it'll show the real icon.  But as soon as you quit out of the application, it again is a "broken link" and so it goes back to the ? icon.

I see users do this all the time with DMG installers.  To "install" the app, they might drag it to the Applications folder correctly (following the handy arrow-pointer thing the app developer included in the DMG's background image).  But then they launch it from the DMG immediately afterwards (or drag the DMG's icon to the dock, another common mistake).  So, the app is really installed right, but the pointer icon on the dock is broken as soon as you unmount the DMG.

Fixing it has nothing to do with uninstalling MC at all.  You just need to "re-pin" it to the Dock.

1. Remove the ? icon from the Dock (drag it away until it says remove or turns into the "cloud puff" pointer) and let go.
2. Then, open your Applications folder on your hard drive, find the app, and drag it down to the dock.

Done.

The Dock is just a set of shortcuts that point to programs somewhere on the hard drive. No application is ever "installed in" the Dock.  It can't be.  The dock isn't a "location" on your computer, it is a program running on your computer, that shows you shortcuts and stuff.

Might I also suggest, as mentioned above, the OSX and Yosemite may not be getting along. Looking hru and correcting permissions and disc hiccups, Yosemite 10.10.3 remains problematic and will not put away application folders. I've also noticed Time Machine  is not functioning properly, a good indication files are corrupt or truncated. Do a search at the Apple forums where you'll find this to be a common malady as indicated by countless threads. Though not very helpful, I've determined that endless wireless software downloads may not be the best course. Coming from 10.6.8 to 10.10.3 was intense. My solution was to do a complete erase and reload of Yosemite from a loaded jump drive. I was not able to backup my Mini server so with a license in hand, how might one reload MC from scratch ?

If at all possible, hopefully you saved at least a Library Backup as well:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Backup

If not, perhaps you can recover one of the automatic ones. If not that either, then you need to re-import all of your media and do your settings all over again.

Many thanks for all the replies and suggestions folks, all are appreciated.

Just to muddy the waters, though, MC Center always did have a presence in the applications folder, but this is a shortcut to the .dmg:

/Users/johnparker/Downloads/MediaCenter200064.dmg

I have checked the details of another music server program (now unused) and this has been configured quite differently:

Mackintosh HD/Applications

I have the opportunity to take my Mac Book down to the local Mackintosh centre and I may try this.

Would it be possible to drag the library to a jump drive or other hard drive ?? Time machine is not functioning beyond the HD folder perhaps Super Duper would accomplish this ?

You can run a library backup by clicking on Playing Now -> Main Library -> Back Up Library...

In the dialog box that comes up, choose the folder on the drive you want to save it on, which could be a USB thumb drive, portable hard drive, etc.

Hope that helps.

I don't understand the question.

If you can access the old disk, or a time machine backup of the old disk, then you should be able to access the automatic Library Backups that MC makes roughly every two days.

These ZIP files will have been saved by default to:
/Users/USERNAME/Documents/JRiver/Media Center 20/Library Backups/

Find the most recent ZIP file in your Time Machine or whatever, copy it over to your computer, and restore it using the instructions in the Wiki article I linked to above.
