Re-rip and preserve tags
« on: April 21, 2015, 01:10:00 pm »

I have some old CD rips which I'd like to re-rip (better quality) and came across a thread about how one could use the existing tags to the newly ripped files. However, this procedure seems to apply to MC13, and I was wondering if someone please could supply (or point to) an updated one? Here is the old and most likely outdated way: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Re-Rip_and_preserve_tags

That guide should still work just fine in the current version.

If it is more convenient, you can import the new files separately and simply copy tags from the old files and paste them to the new ones with CTRL+C and CTRL+SHIFT+V

Oh, thanks! :) I thought it outdated already at "Tools->Auto Import Options" which I couldn't find. But your suggestion of copy/paste DOES sound more convenient, but I can't quite see how or where I should do this?

Oh, that was moved to Tools → Options → Library & Folders → Run auto-import in the background

Select the tracks to copy from, and use Edit → Copy (or hit CTRL+C)
Then select the tracks you want to paste the tags to, and use Edit → Paste Tags (or hit CTRL+SHIFT+V)

That sounds almost too simple to be true!! :) Again, thanks a lot. I'll check it out tomorrow and then let you know. (It's close to bedtime in Norway now. :) )

I added the Outdated flag to that Wiki article.  Sorry about that.

Copy and pasting tags works well, though it can be clumsy if you have a lot to migrate. Copy and paste also handles most, but not all, fields. The main one that irritates me is [Date Imported], for example, but I believe it also doesn't copy over play stats (like number of plays, etc).  One other big possible issue with the copy and paste method is that the new files are considered new files by MC, which means that if they are part of any "regular" Playlists, that they won't be "replaced" in your Playlists (which will still point to the "old" original files). If you have a lot of files you're re-ripping, and you have a bunch of manually crafted Playlists, this could be nightmarish to fix the usual way.

An alternative, if you're interested, is a little application I made called MCFileIngester, which is part of my MCAutoQueue system:

Here's a video demonstrating that exact functionality of this application:

It is free, and works quite well. You're welcome to use it.
