Sort Groups
« on: May 02, 2015, 01:31:38 pm »

Hi, I'm currently searching for a way to sort groups. But all I can find is an option to sort the items inside groups.
Is this even possible?

sorry, what do mean by groups ?? playlist groups, category groupings? the field [Grouping]. I'm guessing you are talking about file list columns.

Probably you want to customize the view (right click) and in the wizard change the sorting choices by first clicking on the 3 "..." set rules for file display. Then in the modify results pane choose sort by and add your parameters there

If this is not your issue, Group is used so much in MC that a bit more info would help.

Following screenshot should show what I mean with groups:

This is not the view I would like to change, but I will use it as example.

What I want to do is to shuffle this groups (sort by random).
According to the example above the seasons should be in a different order every time the view is opened.
I know how to shuffle the items inside the groups, but not how to shuffle the groups because MC always sorts the groups according the tag that is used to group them.

You can't.  The Sort By setting only applies to the files inside the groups.  The sort key for the groups themselves is the Group Header (the text used to sort the groups), and you can't override it:

MrC had a clever way to use invisible text to make them sort otherwise:

Thanks for the answer.

Lets hope that we get an option in future where we can specify some kind of aggregate function (avg, count, min, max, sum, first, last, random) where every tag can be used and the whole expression language where only the group-by-tag can be used (to force a specific result per group).
Should not be that difficult to implement, since all this functions map directly to standard sql functionality.
