Cannot rip disk
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:44:22 am »

I cannot play or rip any disc, I get this error:

"open drive failed. drive is not open"

Trying to rip a CD from an external CD drive. Media center can see the disk and gives me a list of tracks but the ripping process fails with the error message above. Playback also does not work. ITunes can play and rip the disk fine.

Running OS X 10.10.2 (Yosemite).

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem. ITunes works fine, MediaCenter does not.

Hardware setup:
New Mac Mini (2014) with external drive (Samsung SE 208).

With my previous Mac Mini (built 2009) with internal drive, things went mostly well (although unstable).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Sorry... I can't help. I have an optical drive in my Macbook Pro still (its a last-gen unibody before they went Retina), but I've never used it to rip anything in MC other than as a test (which worked).  I don't have optical drives in any of my other Macs, and I ripped all my discs a long time ago.

It might be that MC doesn't know how to use non-native optical drives on OSX?  I'm totally guessing.
