Ripping Speed with MC9.1.256
I'm only getting rip speeds of about 2x with MC9 vs. 17X with MMJB.

I have a 48X read/rip TDK.

I'm using VBR Low Normal, Digital Secure setting....

Any way to make this thing go faster? Is this normal with MC9?

and the drive is already set to MAX speed under the options setting.

there are other pre-sets i forget what they are, but they are in the Lame encoder docs.

Lame Encoder is better quality than MMJB

Thanks. I changed it from normal to fast. and I'm up to a whopping 2.5 average speed from 2.0.

The Lame Encoder may be better but for me I can't tell any difference from one 128mp3 CBR to the next.  So I just want to be able to rip CD's and not take a half an hour each.

well, I changed it 128 fixed and I'm up to 4.0X, which is still a far cry from the regular 16-17X rips I get on MMJB at 128 fixed I can get on MMJB.  

Is this the norm? I don't even hear the CD drive spinning because its so slow.

* --alt-preset presetName     use updated and much higher quality "alternate" presets
Use one of the built-in alternate presets (standard, fast standard, extreme, fast extreme, insane, or the abr/cbr modes).

with insane i got x8.2

with standard i got x4.0

I also have something running so that slowed it down a bit.

this is a 3.06 ghz computer, so slower cpu will be slower.

OK, thanks Sparta. I guess that has to do with the fact that Lame encoding is considered higher quality than MMJB's encoder.

Can anyone else veryify that 4X is about what I should be experiencing with these settings?

I have a similar story...

I'm using a TDK VeloCD ( 40x32x40 )

When ripping and encoding to MP3 - 2x
When ripping and dumping as WAV - 15x

Thanks to a tip I got at www.ipodlounge.com I rip a bunch of CD's first as WAV then let MC9 encode them all later while I'm out.

Here's what I've got going...

No other apps running

I have it set to "analyze audio during ripping" and "digital secure" and "max speed"

Encoder - MP3 Encoder VBR
Quality - Custom

* I removed "fast" to ensure better quality *
unticked - Normalize
ticked - delete temp

Ripped Cassius 1999
Entire album down to 91.6MB
16 traks - 66.2 minutes - average bit rate is 186.94

I've also tried Ripping with my Pioneer DVD ROM drive but it was half the speed.

So I wonder if while you are ripping and encoding the "progress bar" which reads 2x is the averaged speed of the entire process of ripping and encoding, not just the ripping.

I haven't installed or used MMJB so I can't compare, but if I get some time tomorrow I will and post my results.

I'm running 9.0. I ripped a song from Yes-Talk with MC: 5:00 minute track at 4.0 speed took about a minute. VBR High/Digital Secure/Analyze during rip/rip & encode simultaneously. TDK VeloCD 48x.  This about the same as when I used to use MMJB. Average time for a CD rip for me is about 5-8 minutes(using previously mentioned settings).

With build 257 (and every version prior) I'm getting around 30x to 40x using a LiteOn 52x24x52x CD-RW Drive with an Athlon 2400+ and 1GB or PC2700 RAM.

The real secret? 192Kbps Constant Bit Rate, and Don't rip and encode simultaneously.

I don't think the comparison is valid because (as others have said) the Lame encoder is slower, but also you are using MC's "secure" mode which reads the entire track at least twice to do comparison checking and make sure you get a good rip. On a scratched CD the secure mode may read portions of the track up to 16 times. A more valid time comparison would be to rip to wave or Windows Media format in "digital large buffer" mode.
