mp3 file sizes after encoding..
« on: September 28, 2003, 06:55:41 am »

Hi

Prepare for Deja Vu - second post from a newbie!!

Just downloaded MC9.1 to trial with new 3G iPod 20GB

I want my MP3 to sound great so under encoding...

Encoder - MP3 Encoder VBR
Quality - Custom
--alt-preset standard
unticked - Normalize
ticked - delete temp

Ripped Cassius 1999
Entire album down to 91.6MB
16 traks - 66.2 minutes - average bit rate is 186.94

Does this sound right?

If so, I'm only going to get like 20 CD's on to my iPod (20GB) The guy at the Apple Centre told me I could get 200 CD's on it!

Any ideas on how to decrease the file sizes and still retain decent quality?

Yes

I Know for My Portable Whin I Send It To The Player I Have An Option To Have It Converted From My Standard Good Copy To something With A Lower bit Rate.

Not Sure About The IPOD.

Your maths is faulty. :)

If an average CD is 100MB, that means you get 10 CDs per GB.  If your IPOD is 20GB, that's 20x10 = 200 CDs.  Which is exactly what you were told by the IPOD guy. :)

Not Sure What Question We Are Answering

But

>> average bit rate is 186.94
>> Does this sound right?
Is Normal For The Setting --alt-preset standard For A VBR MP3

Thanks KingSparta...
Your answer is just what I was looking for, reassurance that my file sizes are about right before I RIP 200+ CD's.

Thanks Madcow...
for reading between the lines and preventing me from going back to the shop on Monday, only to walk out with my foot firmly lodged in my mouth!  :-[

My younger brother was right, this MP3 stuff rocks!
