Importing iTunes' tags to MC
« on: May 27, 2015, 12:09:44 am »

I wrote a similar topc in the other topic, but I moved here and changed question.
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=88818.msg674361#msg674361

In iTunes, there are tags named;
"Sort Album",
"Sort Album Artist",
"Sort Artist",
"Sort Composer",
"Sort Name",
but MC doesn't.

I can add these tags manually in MC, but these tags
are not filled when I import song files with
these tags already filled in iTunes.

My question is ”how do I make it work?"

Thanks

You can add user define library fields for those tags.

Click on Tools/Options/Library & Folders/Manage library fields

Then click on the Add new fields button.  Be sure that you specify the same name that's in the iTunes tags.

Thanks for the advise.

I  have done. These were straight forward.

>Be sure that you specify the same name that's in the iTunes tags.

Yes,  I copy & Pasted tags from "iTunes Music Library.xml" to be sure to spell right.
Sort Name
Sort Artist
Sort Album
I made sure these fields have values.

Now, how I am supposed to copy music files?
I went tools>Import> Check "Import a single holder" >Next> Selected a folder and then >Finish.
Unfortunately, those fields added are still empty.
How does MC get the value of "Sort Name" in xml file and put it in the library?

Thanks

In the Recently Imported Playlist view, you should see the files you imported at the end of the list.

JRiver normall uses the Tag values that are stored in the music files to fill its library database fields.  I do not know whether JRiver has any feature for reading the iTunes database to get tag values.

To see what Tags are present in the files,  Click on one of the files in the Recently imported list.  If the Tag window is not visible, make it visible using the Edit/Tag command.  Now click on the first line in the Tag window just below the word Tag.  This opens a window that lists a lot of information about the file including the tags that are actually present.

What is the file type of the files you imported?  WAV, AIF, AAC, MP3?

There's some sort of weird magic going on with itunes imports and I don't claim to understand it at ALL.  This is just one thing I tested.

If you do a straight import, it doesn't seem to do anything special.  However, if you go to itunes and export a PLAYLIST as XML, then go into MC and do File > Import Playlist, it seems to do more.  In particular, I found that using the XML playlist, MC imports the Star Ratings and the Play Count (and it may do more, I'm not sure).  It might be worth a try for a set of test files.

I don't know if "Sort Name", "Sort Artist", etc. are stored in the music files or .xml file.

I have been testing by using ALAC and AAC encorded music files.

Thanks

blgentry,
Sounds intereting.  I tried once, but MC doesn't seem to import "Sort Name", "Sort Artist", etc.

Thanks
