Upgrade from Version 13 Questions
« on: May 28, 2015, 08:44:04 pm »

Years ago I "upgraded" to version 14 from version 13. In doing so, I lost all my custom fields that I inserted and filled in version 13 when I imported my 9000+ files into my new version 14 library. So I went back to version 13 and have been on that for the last several years.

If I upgrade to version 20, how can I import my MP3 files into a new library and retain all the custom fields (with the data that's in them) that I added in version 13?

For that matter, how can I bring my current skin and view into version 20?

And lastly, is the upgrade still $25-$30?

I don't know if the Library Backup system existed that long ago, but it should be possible to get a copy of your Library to work on MC20.  Best thing would be to install a trial and try it.

What you don't want to do is re-import everything into MC20.

Assuming you can't make a Library Backup in MC13 (I just don't remember) the basic idea is that you'll want to copy your Library files on disk (not the media files, the database files) into a new folder, and then point MC20 at those Library files. I can help with this once you get the trial installed if you need help.

The upgrade cost is covered here:

It might depend on whether your custom fields (tags) have been written into the media files themselves, or just into the library.

If the tags are just in the library, then you definitely need to find a way to import the MC13 library into MC20.

But if the tags have been written back into the media files, then you could just point MC20 at the media files and it would build a new library from them.

Note: MC 20 has a Library Tools command "Update Tags from Library" which is expressly used for ensuring that the tags are stored in the media file itself. But I don't know if MC13 had that command. Nor do I know if that command will also write custom tags to the media files, or if it is limited to standard tags. Probably someone else can advise on that...

MC20 should be able to open up a MC13 Library directly, I believe, and should auto-convert it.  I'd avoid re-importing if possible, and just open up a copy of your MC13 Library, if possible.

If that doesn't work, I could even install some old builds and "step it up" through the versions for you.  But that probably won't be needed.

MC20 might even automatically see and migrate the Library when installed.  I'm not sure though with a version that old.  It does this with more modern versions when upgraded.

One tip, if you do this, DO NOT uninstall MC13 until you get everything working to your liking.  It'll keep working, and that's how you get the upgrade pricing if and when you decide to pay.

Okay. I installed MC20. At the end of the installation I received a warning message stating that "Media Center was installed for a different operating system" but I was able to run MC20 (demo version).

MC20 imported my MC13 library including the fields I custom-made, and their data. It also imported However, I still cannot import several MP3 files. Both MC13 and MC20 report Zero Files Imported.

I can send you a file that imports correctly and one that does not import at all if you like. (?)

You can also see my recent post that gives a few more details in the MC13 forum.
