Newish MC20 User on mac
« on: May 30, 2015, 02:57:46 pm »

Hello, All,
I have been using MC20 on my mac mini for a few months now.  I used XLD to rip my CD collection to FLAC to my internal hard drive.  Everything was working just fine.  Then I started running into disk space issues.  So, I bought a WD MyCloud disk.  I am moving everything to there now.  Let me review my current setup.

1) mac mini running os x 10.9.X
2) using a Peachtree Audio DAC ITx - very nice dac for the $$.  Connected to the mac mini via USB
2) WD MyCloud disk on my network.  Fixed, static IP.
3) Router is provided by AT&T.  Works fine for other network applications.

I copied my existing library to the WD NAS with no problems.  I then imported this library into MC using import single folder.  I pointed this to the "top level" of my music library.  It appeared that everything imported with just a  few errors.

I confirmed that XLD can rip to the WD NAS just fine.

I then started attempting to "mess around" a bit.  I now think I have MC confused and I am not sure how to back things out.  What I would like to do is delete all libraries in MC (not the physical files of course) and just reimport using auto import.  I just cannot figure out how delete all the libraries.  I can upload a screen shot of MC if needed.

Any help would be most appreciated.  BTW, I really like MC and the iOS remote app.  Killer combination and I strongly recommend the products to my friends who are trying to break into the digital playback world.

Thanks,
Dale

Greetings!

You can clear the library by going to File > Library > Clear Library...

Nope, that is not working.  While the library is removed, it reappears within seconds.  All I want to do is clear out ALL libraries and do a fresh import for a single library.  Can someone walk me through this?  And, yes, I have read through the various library sections of the wiki.

If I delete MC2.0 and reinstall, what are the licensing issues?  Any at all?  I have my original registration code.  Do I just use that during the re-install?  Forgive the newbie kinda of questions.  I am still rather new at MC2.  I really like it and want to make it work, but the library issues are getting frustrating.

You have to de-activate Auto-Import Background Scanning before you clear the Library, or it'll re-import everything pretty much right away. That's the most likely cause of your central problem. Auto-Import is still looking in your old locations on disk, and is re-importing the stuff there.

If you really want to "nuke" it completely, do this:

0. Make a Library Backup and save it somewhere in case you later decide this was a terrible idea.
1. Close MC.
2. In the Finder, use the Go menu and choose Go to Folder.
3. Paste in: ~/Library/Application Support/J River
4. Delete the Media Center 20 folder.
5. Re-open Media Center and it'll be fresh and clean with nothing left over from your previous installation at all, except the License.

But, that's kind of a low-orbit ion cannon way to fix a problem. If you ask about what you need, we might be able to help you fix it without such a sledgehammer approach.

Don't worry about the Licensing. The way I listed shouldn't nuke your License, which is stored elsewhere.  However, if it does, you can restore it at any time (in fact, you're allowed to use a single License on any Macs you own, within reason).

By the way, if you haven't borked it all up yet, or can still go back to before you decided to move to the external disk (everything is still on your Local disk too), you can use the Rename, Move, and Copy Files tool to migrate everything from within MC without re-importing anything:

hey, glynor,
Thank you for that answer!  That helps me.  I will dbl check the auto import settings and see where that gets me.  I still have the original library on my local disk, but I have ripped several hundred additional CDs to the new library out on the NAS device.  I really want to keep the library out there as it is a 4 Tbyte device.  Once I get my vinyl playback/ripping sorted out, I will be ripping a couple of thousand vinyls to digital (FLAC) and having it all out on the NAS device makes life so much easier.

Yes. Definitely keep the media files on the NAS.  MC works well with them.

A word to the wise, though, make sure not to keep Media Center's "Library" (the database files themselves) on the NAS. MC won't like that.  I'm pretty certain that's not what you meant, but I figured it was worth the caution.

hey, glynor,
Yeah, as I am learning more and more about MC, I realized keeping the MC libraries local was the only way to go.  And, thank you once again for the information.  I have everything sorted out.  I basically blew it all away and did a reimport.  Everything is up and running and streaming just fine now.
