Window 10
« on: June 01, 2015, 04:37:48 am »

I am offered by Microsoft a free upgrade to Window 10. I bet many of us are receiving the notification. Just wonder if MC works with Window 10 or is it too early to fo the upgrade?

Alright, I nominate you two the official JRiver Windows 10 testing department.  We won't be installing it for a while here I don't think.

I've had it running in a VM since the first release you could get.  I wouldn't put it on a real workstation yet (not primary anyway), but it's pretty good for Desktop style use now (there have been "bumps").

MC has always been fine, except for that few weeks where all Win32 apps were broken on it.

Windows Phone 10 Mobile Pro Edition or whatever is apparently still a disaster. And Win 10 itself is decidedly sketchier on tablet-style devices (though better on the more recent builds).

Yep, I've been running Windows 10 via Hyper-V for months now, not noticed issues with MC at all... just with Windows 10 itself.

Microsoft announced Windows 10 will be released on July 29th, and here's an interesting tidbit about DVD playback here;

Quote
“Watching DVDs requires separate playback software,” Microsoft notes. But I assume any existing DVD playback software will continue running. And in a separate FAQ, Microsoft says it is “providing a free DVD playback app in Windows 10 for Windows Media Center users.”

That's very concerning, since DVD playback in Media Center currently relies on the Microsoft DVD Navigator for menu support.

Wasn't MC recoded from the "ground up" about 2 years ago - specifically to free itself from all things Microsoft?

I'm running Win 10 build 10130 now and it is much improved over the earlier previews.
There is another preview being released to the Fast Ring (build 10134) next week which is supposedly the last preview build before the RTM.

Also, it is reported (on Tenforums.com)that if you have a preview build, Microsoft will just upgrade it to a final release so you don't have to uninstall and do a clean install when the RTM is released (which is nice if you have a lot of setup/config work on your system).

As long as qdvd.dll exists on Windows 10, DVD menus *should* work, correct?

Are DVD menus working?

I can test this later if you want.

I strongly suspect their thing about the DVD Pack has nothing to do with DVD Navigator (it didn't before), but is about the MPEG-LA licensed MPEG-2 decoder, which MC doesn't need.  That was the deal with Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Could be wrong, and I haven't explicitly tested it, but I'd be surprised if they ripped DVD Navigator out on purpose.  I think this stuff is all about the MPEG-2 decoder.

They ripped out Windows Media Center, and they said they might have a new solution for DVD Playback. If Windows Media Player still could play DVDs using the DVD Navigator, why make those cryptic statements?

Wasn't MC recoded from the "ground up" about 2 years ago - specifically to free itself from all things Microsoft?

No.  That's not how it happened at all.

MC had been coded in a largely cross-platform way for years and years before anyone ever saw any fruits of the labors. There were, and are still, exceptions to that.

* Theater View is a Direct3D application, and is therefore Windows-only at this time.
* Red October and the entire DirectShow-based video playback engine is, again, Windows only (because it relies on DirectX stuff).

The Mac version of MC has a shiny new video engine, but the Windows version doesn't use it, and Hendrik is writing that from the ground-up.  Keep in mind that Apple only ships one computer with a built-in optical drive option of any kind anymore (the "left over" 13-inch non-Retina Macbook Pro).  So, I don't know that DVD support is such a big deal there, and they only just got video working at all in this version.

But, surely if they're going to build a new DVD Navigator replacement, it'll be done in a cross-platform way to work with Hendrik's shiny new video engine.

I'm not convinced either.

But I think that Windows Media Player being able to use DVD Navigator isn't the same as being able to decode MPEG-2.  Shipping one is just shipping working, but old, code.  Shipping the other involves licensing cost to Microsoft.

It would help if I tested I suppose?  I'll have to find a DVD somewhere...

I'll be doing clean installations anyway. The little laptop which acts as server / media center in the living room runs on a fresh Windows 10 installation. My big workhorse one does not. Upgrade from 8.1 Pro and it takes quite some time to load at startup. Hard disk usage goes through the roof for several minutes. Had the same problem back when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Clean installation from Windows 8 made it much speedier.

I'll stick to the 10074 build I think. Read many reports of wi-fi connections being dropped for no reason. And only a reboot would bring them back. And more of that stuff. I think Microsoft has to do a lot of bugfixing still.

Are DVD menus working?
What about the WDM Driver?

Running the WASAPI driver for my Terratec Aureon 7.1 USB which is hooked up through Toslink to my receiver. Works like a charm. Same thing with DVD menu's. Tried a few discs which are parked on my media hard disk. And they work on the laptop which is upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro. Haven't tried the small laptop yet, because that one I only use for music playing / streaming.

I didn't find a DVD to test last night, but I'll still test with my VM.  It was clean installed, so that'd rule out any shenanigans from updating from 8.1 preserving the Navigator.

I have some DVDs (but I only rip "main movie") - so what do I need to do to test Win10? Is an ISO copy going to the test in the same way as if I do a full rip to folder (IFO/VOB)?
I'd be happy to test if someone can walk me along.

Does anyone know.. is the  update.. in place.. will it update and keep all existing software and settings intact?

When I went to w7.. omg.. weeks before I got all my software and settings reinstalled.

You might want to read this article regarding what features are lost when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10: http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/1/8696949/windows-10-feature-loss

Windows Media Center is the big one, but other trivial features lost include Gadgets, Hearts, etc.

Windows Media Center is utter tripe - It is the first thing I uninstall and replace with VLC. It wont be missed.

Been running JRiver Media Center on several iterations of Windows 10 Insider Preview & the main thing I have had issues with is the disappearing Start Menu (which can occur despite JRiver MC running).

Okay, so I ripped a full DVD to a folder (ifo/vob) on Win10 (build 10130) and it played back on JRiver without any problems. The menus worked, can also select titles with right-click>DVD menu, everything looked good. This is on the Server machine where DVD is on a "local" (13.6TB) drive.
On right-click>Direct Show filters it lists "DVD Navigator".

What is strange is that on my Win8.1 (client) the menus don't work. DVD jumps right into playing. And DVD Navigator is not shown in the Direct Show filters list.

Yeah, that's a Windows 10 thing - I've seen people having this issue. This is the main reason why I don't upgrade from release-to-release of Windows 10 Technical Preview - it seems to only cause weird issues. Plus, I prefer clean installs. ;)

DVD Menu playback on clients isn't supported, unless you have full file access - the DVD Navigator requires that.
Instead, you get title-only playback streamed from the MC server.

I thought I had "full file access" to my server files (the drives are mapped and full permissions granted as far as I can tell).

For me it's not an issue as I don't plan to rip full DVDs and don't care about menus -  but for anyone else who wants DVD menus, is there a way to do this on a client - or is it just not possible to provide full file access?

Are your client drives mapped the exact same way they are on the server, and do you have the "use local file if available" box checked under media network-->Client options?  I don't have any DVD menus around any more, but when I did, client viewing worked.

Yes, but if you use and have Windows Media Center installed, it'll be removed. Also Gadgets and Hearts if you're upgrading from Windows 7.

Personally, it only takes me less than 2 hours to reinstall all my programs when doing a clean install of Windows, which I do every couple months.

If you are on Windows 7 SP1 or a fully patched Windows 8.1 system, then it should upgrade with most applications and settings migrated over.  Microsoft does seem to be actively targeting some known-bad "bloatware" apps installed by OEMs.  And you lose WMC and the minor stuff mentioned by Awesome Donkey.
