License clarification: Installing MC on 2 PCs
« on: September 23, 2003, 09:30:19 am »

This is possibly a dumb question, but here goes: As the proud owner of a new 2-PC home network Im considering installing MC on the second PC once 9.1 is released. My understanding of what I need to do is this:

1. Uninstall MC on the 1st PC (noting registration code first).
2. install MC on the 1st and 2nd PC.
3. Get restore key and apply it to both PCs.

It seems I will lose my settings and possibly installed skins etc. on the first PC by doing this, but I can live with that. I guess I could just install and get a restore key for the 2nd PC and leave the first alone, but looking at the FAQ Im not totally clear whether this is allowed. Maybe it makes no diffrerence.

Have I got this right? This is sort of covered by the Licence FAQ, but not the explicit scenario where you are installing on the second PC after the 2 week period. I just want to be clear that Im allowed to do this.

KS - thanks. I wish Id paid more attention to these questions in the past, but I didnt, and Ive never had to restore, so please indulge me. Reading the FAQ I get this:

1. I have 10 restores.

2. I can a) install on one PC and restore/reinstall 10 times a year, b) install/restore on 9 other separate PCs in one year and hope I dont have to reinstall, c) install/restore on 20 PCs, 2 at a time or d) any combination of the above.

Surely I have this wrong - it wouldnt be the first time. Im confident I can legally install MC on my 2 PCs. But I want to be absolutely clear that Im not breaking the rules whichever way.

That's covered in the FAQ:
www.mediajukebox.com/license

One license can be used on multiple machines you own.

you can restore your computer 10 times per year from the restore page.

you also are e-mailed a restore key file each key file is good for 14 days. within that 14 days you can restore your computer with that key or any other computer you may have in your home.

when you use the key that is sent to you in the e-mail you do not use up restores. only when you go to the restore page do you use a restore.

you can not give out that restore key or the the key# to "BillyBob" if you do so J river can cancel the key and the user can then no longer use the restore page.

since the key file is only good for 14 days this protects J river from unwanted piracy.

Any idea why my email just told me that I have 13 restores left?  I bought MC in April, and should (I think) have 8 left...

OK thanks Jim, KS - I had looked at the FAQ but was getting mildly confused (not the first time as I said). Guess I was making a mountain out of a molehill. When the time comes Ill just install on the 2nd PC and get a restore for it.
