Using external player and the .dvd;1 extension

I want to use an external player for the videos, but have an issue with the ifo extension. Media center uses an dvd;1 extension and when I try to change this in the library to an .ifo, the change will not stick. It reverts back to the dvd;1 ext. As I remember, I was able to do this, but evidently forgot how it was done. What am I doing wrong?
