Key to cancel search or change focus out of search box?
« on: June 14, 2015, 11:01:53 pm »

This is minor but...

I keep finding myself doing a search, then clearing the search box by clicking the X.  But I'm still focused on the search box at that point.  So when I go to use other hot keys, like Play/Pause for example, I get nothing.   Because most of these types of keys don't work when focused on an input box like search.

I had hoped that Escape would not only clear the search, but also "exit from search".  It doesn't do anything (at least on Mac) (Yes I know I'm posting on the windows forum; it gets a lot more traffic.).

I've searched a bit for this, including looking for core commands for clearing search, or for changing focus, but I can't seem to find anything.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian.

Yeah.  ESC does something on Windows, but it doesn't do that. It just closes the little "search wizard" pop-over, but leaves the search intact. Control-A, Delete, then Tab will do it, kinda.  This still appears to run a search, but an empty one, so it "works" (but the Search Box shows "Wizard").

It would be nice if ESC cleared any entered search and moved focus back to where it came from before the Search box was activated.

Just tried the combo a few times:  Command-A, delete, Tab.  Like you said, it pulls up the wizard, and runs some kind of search, as it narrows my current view way down.  Plus my other hot keys are still disabled.  That's really the point for me, is to get back my hot keys for play/pause, etc.

Not a big deal at all... just asking here in case there's a good way I've missed.

Thanks,

Brian.

Next build:
Changed: Pressing escape while the search box is focused will clear the search.

^ Wow, thanks Matt.  :)

Will this also remove focus from the search box?  I ask because shift-esc already does a "clear" action.  It just leaves focus in the search box, which is the source of my question.

Thanks again,

Brian.

No, it'll leave the focus in the search box.  It took me a little longer to do because that was important to me (and originally clearing it was tossing the focus).

Actually, double escape seems to de-focus the search box for me right now, which is inline how some other search boxes work that I've seen. Single escape clears, double closes.

If you get the latest, a second escape won't clear the focus.  I suppose I could make it do that, but who cares?

I'll change is so that pressing escape a second time will kill the suggestions and the focus.

That's great. Thanks Matt, and thanks to Brian for bringing it up.
