ads are popping up
« on: September 22, 2003, 10:26:30 am »

I am seeing some ads popping up.  I'm pretty sure they're associated with watching TV with MC9.0 ... but I'm not sure because they tend to pop-up behind, and I'm never absolutely sure where they came from.  Considering JRiver's past policies,, I don't want to believe MC is somehow generating them ... but in many cases I wasn't using any other software.

Anyone else seen these?  Do I need post examples?

if you do not have a browser running it may be a gray box with ads in and an "OK" button

this is a Microsoft Messager ad.

there is only one program i know that will block this

here is a link to it

It's not Media Center.  Did you change the MC start page?

KingSparta ... did you mean "MS Messenger"?  I don't use it, and any startup reference to it shouldn't be running.  Otherwise, I'll have to make sure I don't have a IE browser window open next time.

JimH ... I didn't change the MC start page.

I'll try to pay closer attention next time ... but I do have Adaware, KerioPF and NAV looking for this sort of thing.

well the funny thing is microsoft like to what they call "intivate" just because you do not use it does not mean they care.

turn off the microsoft messenger and then load outlook express. what happens is it will load up MS messenger. once that happens your fair game for MS Messenger pop-ups.

I am not sure if they can still get thru if it is not loaded maybe, maybe not.

if your using some P2P software that can also cause an ad pop up.

but in short they are not coming from MC9, i can't even get J River to spam me.

The "messager" responsible for those notorious dialog box pop-up ads is a system service, not a program that you use or don't use.  "MS Messager" is an IM client and is not related in any way, shape, or form to "messager" the service.

To disable this service is easy, and no 3rd party applications are necessary.  Do a seach at MS's Knowlege Base.

Edit: Are you getting these dialog boxes, or are you getting bona fide pop-under ads?  Since you mentioned they are hidden, my guess is that these are ads that are unrelated to the messager service.  (The dialog box from messager will pop up above all other windows.)

Well maybe that's why I think I got them the other day, and I don't think I had the "messager" loaded.

It's Very Irritating

My dog is getting fleas.  Could that be in any way related?

I've had this before, too.

As mentioned earlier it is the "Messenger Service" NOT MSN or Windows Messenger (the IM client).

The Messenger service on a PC is designed to accept messages broadcast on a LAN by a system admin for example (using, for example, the "NET SEND" command).

To switch it off, disable the Messenger Service in the Services control panel applet (Administrative Tool / Services on WinXP)

That'll shut the swine up!
