I have tried unsuccessfully to pass-through DSD64 from my HTPC (Gigabyte z68x-ud3h-b3) to my Denon AVRx7200wa over HDMI.  The Denon is spec’d to accept DSD64.

“Something went wrong with playback.  Details:
Playback could not be started on the output ‘WASAPI’ using the format ‘DOP 2.8 MHz 2ch’.
This output format may not be supported by your hardware. ..... “

In JRiver MC20:

Audio Device: Denon-AVRHD (Intel display audio) [WASAPI]

DSP & output format – not used.  But I did try the various Output Formats, but all failed.

Bitstreaming: YES (DSD) .  Also tried other Bitstreaming options

I can pass through 2-channel 24/192.  That plays ok.

I can convert the DSD to PCM @ 176,400.  That plays ok.

Could it be my Gigabyte MB is not allowing this to work?  Or would it just pass the bitstream as is.  It has Intel HD3000.

There are no PC components which support bitstreaming DSD over HDMI. You can only do that with stand-alone SACD players.

Would optical spdif cable work rather than HDMI cable?  Or do people use USB to connect their HTPC's to their DAC's?

USB may be the most common way to connect a DAC.
