I haven't done any tagging in a long time, So I wanted to put "Nomad" in the comments field in about 100 files.

After I added the comment I clicked on another column and then I got the box that says you are going to change x amount of tags, Press ok to continue,
Pressed ok and then the box that says changing 1 of 100 came up, But the box wasn't small, but the whole size of the screen? (On my 2K machine it a normal size box), Also after a few min and it only updating a couple of tags I closed it down... Why is this so slow?

What file types?

If mp3, is it fast if you disable ID3v2 writing in Plugin Manager?

Is it possible you have a hard drive in PIO mode or something?  I don't think this is a common problem.

No I don't think it's common either as I haven't heard anyone else say anything. All of the files are WMA lossless and 160kbps.

I don't know what PIO mode is so I can't comment on that.

Hey Matt,

I ripped some mp3's and tried the tagging and it's fast.

On WMA it is so slow?

My WMA plugin in is version 2.0.34

I mentioned this in a beta thread awhile back.  My tagging's incredibly slow if the files aren't already in the cache.  Note that if you just ripped, your files are already in the cache.

Rip some files with an album cover embedded in them.  Go do something else so they're not in the cache.  Now go change a tag across all of them.  You can count seconds between numbers as the tags count down.

We don't have any control over the tagging speed  of WMA files. We use SDK which was provided to us by Microsoft.

It's quite slow to tag Lossless WMA files because of their size (20-50MB). WMA stores its tags in the beginning of the file, so when it detects that there is not enough space in the tagging area of the file to add the new information, the SDK overwrites the whole file.

I just tried to tag some lossless WMA files with WMP and it's as slow as MC.

Is there anyway to keep the information from updating the tag? (maybe store the info in MC itself?)

To improve speed you can turn off tagging (Options > General > Update File Info) or use APE for your lossless files.

Hmm use APE...

If I convert (using MC9) wma Lossless to APE, will I lose any quality?

I know if you go Mp3 to wma (non lossless) you lose quite a bit in the conversion.

Lossless is lossless so barring hardware failures there'll never be a difference in audio quality.
