Cool smartlists
« on: September 18, 2003, 09:41:04 am »

Hi,
I want to be able to make a random smartlist that will for example give me some random albums, but in the correct track order (so the album plays as in sequence but is chosen randomly). How do I do that?

Does anybody else have any cool ideas for smartlists?

At the moment I just use simple ones like:
random one hour from  ***genre

I'm a big nine inch nails fan.  I have every domestic "halo" release, and in MC9, I've tagged these albums with "Halo xx" in the Comment field.  I built a smartlist called "nails, all lined up" which has all the halos, in order of release, on it.  I did it like this:

[File Type]=[mp3] [Artist]=[Nine Inch Nails] ~sort=[comment],[album],[track #]

Sweet!

What I REALLY want is a smartlist that will generate ONE full complete album, at random, in track order.  My old 5-disc CD changer had a shuffle that would pick and play one album at random... I want to make MC do that!

So far, all I have is this:

[File Type]=[mp3] -[Album]=[] ~a

All this needs is a Limit: 1 album modifier on it.  We can limit by tracks, minutes, megabytes, and so on... can y'all implement an album limit easily?

I agree with you. Also Limit: 1 Artist would be VERY usefull when creating smartlists. If I create random playlist that plays music from 60's, almost every second song is beatles (I have 9 beatles albums). If we only could use Limit: 3 Artist.... to limit max 3 songs per artist

Does this work ... from the notes of build 9.1.254

1. Changed: In searches, "Full Albums" modifier evaluated after limits so it's now possible to make a smartlists of a random number of full albums. (ex: [Track #]==1 ~a ~n=10)

Aye, I just noticed that after I posted the above.  It works, but only if you don't use ~sort.  Using a sort will cause MC to always pick the same album.  Check out this thread.

The tilde signifies a "modifier" or anything in the "Modifiers" section of the smartlist wizard menus.

~a = full albums
~n = track limit
~sort = sorting

...and so on
