Transcoding/resampling 24bit to 16bit PCM
« on: July 12, 2015, 10:54:34 pm »

I stream from my JRiver MediaServer at home to my copy of MediaCenter running on my laptop at work. It works great with losless 16bit/44.1Khz. Hi-Res files crush my network link though.

Is it possible to have the server transcode/resample Hi-Res files to 16/44.1 Flac? I can see a setting to transcode to mp3, although I haven't been able to get it to work yet, but nothing to target lower-bit depth Flac.

Thanks

You can transcode to PCM 16 bit No Header (L16)

Do I set it on the client or the server? Or both?

On the server.

It's not working. The option I'm looking at is
Media Network -> Client Options (When connected to a Library Server) -> Audio Conversion -> Encoder

But that doesn't sound right if it's supposed to be set on the server

Could you tell me if there's a different option I should be setting?

Thanks

It's under the Advanced Options for the server.  In Media Network.

Do you mean the "Add or configure DLNA servers" submenu under Media Network (but not under advanced)?

I've gone in there and redefined the "Generic DLNA" server to transcode to PCM L16 and resample to 44.1. That does work when I'm sending audio to a different DLNA renderer on the network. But when I'm playing back to my own computer using "Player", it still plays the full bit depth and sample rate.

Thanks

I've got it working I think:
- on the server create a DLNA configuration which forces the desired bit depth and sample rate
- configure the server *while* the client is connected so it comes up in the list of Players
- right-click on the client and choose an appropriate DLNA profile.

One question though, what is the option Media Network -> Client Options -> Audio Conversion used for?

I thought I had it working but apparently not. Now I'm at work, so no longer on my home network. When I remote into my home server, my work laptop doesn't appear in the Library server's list of clients. When I stream an HD file, it's not being transcoded, it comes through at the full bitrate and chokes.

Any help would be highly appreciated...

Your post is confusing. First you say your renderer does not appear. And then you talk of pushing an HD track to it.

Ok to simplify:

I have two copies of media center. One is running on my PC at home, connected to the Internet. The other is running on my laptop, at work.

When I'm at work, I listen using media center on my laptop, and connect to my home PC as a library server, over the Internet, and stream to my laptop. This works.

I want the server to transcode the streams from 24bit to 16bit because there is not quite enough bandwidth for 24 bit.

I can't work out whether this is possible, and if it is possible, how.

The confusion arises from me trying to understand previous posts and trying out different (possibly wrong) settings.

Thanks

I think you need to set the conversion option on the Client, not on the Server. On the laptop (client) go to Options - Tools - Network Media - Client Options (when connected to a Library Server) - Audio Conversions and set it to Always Convert and set the Encoder conversion option to PCM 16 Bits or to MP3 for even less bandwidth usage. The server should convert based on the settings on the client.  That allows different conversions for different clients.
