I'm interested in the HDTV subject as I'm about to invest in a 42 inch Plasma but most of the stuff in that link is way over my head.

I'll mainly use the screen for enjoying DVDs but I'll also hook up my PC to it too.  I'm trying to decide whether it's worth spending the extra cash to get a high definition model (1024x1024).  Trouble is that they are few and far between, more expensive and do not seem to compete well with the normal 852x452 models in other areas (like contrast ratio).

This is quite an interesting explanation:

Microsoft and WMP9 are making lots of industry partners on this very well... While the DVD consortium bicker about copy protection and still seem to desire to use MPEG2 we have people like Joe Kane coming out and loudly singing WMP9's praises as a delivery medium and clearly demonstrating that WMP9 is superior to DVHS even at 8 - 9 Mbit rates (red laser DVD)...

Add in the fact that Microsoft have been demonstrating WMP9 as an D-Cinema delivery platform

While at the same time have pulled a minor coup by getting WMP9 into the HD delivery game also...

All it takes is for a content provider to desire more bandwidth for his codec (who does not) and it seems obvious... The implications for IPTV and streamed HD over IP or cable make WMP9 quite a contender.

BTW at those relativly low resolutions I would take a higher contrast Plasma over a 1024x1024 Plasma...

BTW anyone with a large high rez display should check out the demo's available here...

I am currently using a 1365x1024 projector (though am swapping out out next week for a 1280x720p HD2 DLP) and the T2 extreeme edition DVD in WMP9 simply blows away the DVD version which is a reference transfer itself.

Thanks for the advice PhatPhreddy.  That's what I'll do.  The one I have in mind is a Panasonic with Contrast Ratio of 4000:1.

It's a shame MC9.x only plays them in stereo and not analogue 5.1...
