Author Topic: Restore Windows Library into Linux - of course it won't work (file paths) but...  (Read 4238 times)

Hi

I have a MC library backup created from the Windows version of MC.
When I restore it into MC 21.0.4 (linux)

a) I get "Library restore successful" Please restart the program... ".
b) However this is a modal dialogue box still displaying "Restoring Library" over it which looks weird. Note if I minimize JRiver this modal will just stay there and run over any other apps I am running.
c) Anyway when  I click OK under "Restore Successful" and "Restoring Library" modal dialogue is still there, and it just stays there.

So I click on the menu or folder items on the right bar to see if JRiver to work and it is unresponsive. Right now there is no way for me to tell if something is going on at this stage, so I assume the library import is still going on although I don't see much disk activity. Or it might have crashed who knows...

*** Now I understand the Windows and Linux will have different file path formats, so this is unlikely to work so, please don't make this point I understand! *** Thanks!

Here are my specific points, I hope you can respond only to the points below (1,2,3) - many thanks.

1) (a) + (b) Weird having both dialogue boxes displayed. I suggest you combine them into one. It's sort of clumsy. Having a model popup running all the time so it overlays the other applications isn't optimal.
2) There should be a progress bar or some sort of animation showing activity here. Ideally there should be a verbose mode as well. Otherwise we have no idea about what is going on.
3) If the the library is pointing to the wrong file paths, or to an incompatible format it should do something like stop with warning/errors.

I have created an entirely separate thread  to discuss how I can change file paths in the library created under windows, so it points to the right file paths in Linux:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=99474.0

So please note I'm keeping this discussion entirely separate so I can point to the specific issues above.

Right now I'm still displaying "Restoring Library" - I guess I'm going to have to force MC21.0.4 to close.

A follow up. I decided to end the MC21 task as obviously this was not getting anywhere (or it appeared not to be anyway).
I ran MC21 again and it stated the license had expired  :-[
I rebooted my PC and tried it again it still stated the license had expired - not cool!!!
So I restored the master license.

When MC ran I actually saw my library there, but understandably the file paths were all wrong. There's another thread to discuss this anyway (see previous post).
Just additionally wanted to tell you that MC21.0.4 loses licensing this way as well.

Cheers

Just a FYI I edited both posts above several times to make my points as clear as possible. Thanks.

Restore the library only, don't choose to restore settings. Then just use the Rename, Move, and Copy tool to update the database to point to the new file locations using find and replace (i.e. Find: C:\Music, Replace: /home/user/Music).

Lots of people have done this successfully, so it's probably a bug specific to your OS.

I tested library restores with and without settings last night and had no issues.  I did notice that sometimes the "library import completed" dialog box pops under the loading dialog (giving the impression that the program is frozen), but once you foreground that dialog box and click ok the restore finishes just fine.  So this might just be a UI issue.

Yep, can confirm this one. There's a couple instances where important pop up dialogs are under the loading dialog - for example the authorization dialog where you input the username and password when setting up media network on another PC.

Many Thanks.
How do bugs get logged here. Do I consider this now submitted?
