Hi, I am brand new to Linux - 1 day of use, total, and have only been using MC for about a month. Am transitioning to Mint as my main os, and intend to quit windows altogether when I'm ready.
 I installed MC on windows for the high quality sound, I am not interested in networking sound between devices. I just have my laptop and some medium quality Creative speakers for listening. No other audio equipment.
The MC installation guide for Mint 17 is clear - once I learn how to use the terminal properly What do I need to know to have MC on Mint putting out the kind of high quality sound, with the kind of control that wasapi gives me in Windows?
If you need to know anything about my system, I can find my way around windows, but with Linux you would need to tell me where to look.
I have seen PulseAudio mentioned, and JACK, but when I look them up the descriptions of their abilities don't mention anything about hi fidelity sound, so I am unsure if they will give me what I want.
I don't understand any jargon or technical language yet, so if you use any terms not commonly used by people like me, please could you translate/explain simply what you are referring to in terms of how they affect user experience

This is a complex and convoluted topic, even for long-time linux users. To boil it down for you, if you are just using MC to play music on this machine, forget about Pulse and JACK and just use MC to output directly to ALSA.

I am thankful for such a simple answer! Have printed out instructions for installing MC on Ubuntu/Mint and have decided to actually pay a Linux savvy tech to do the install and teach me as I watch, as if I get into trouble I don't yet understand enough to be able to follow any instructions people might give me here to help me out! Will do a search to see if Mint already includes ALSA. Thanks.

Consider using Debian since it's supported by JRiver.

I've used his guide setting up MC20 in Ubuntu and am yet to do the MC21 upgrade. If history serves as any guide, it should be as simple as follow the recipe.

To address your query relating to audio setup, look at the 3rd post in the referred thread noted above marked: Get Pulseaudio Output Working
I'd expect that that should help get you down the path you need to travel.

Jim's advice is correct though. JRiver makes no bones about which distro they officially support but help for the other flavours is generally not too far away. I'm confident that you should do fine.

Keep in mind, I've read posts that PulseAudio seems to be limited to 48kHz output (I haven't been able to verify this myself). Using ALSA should be used instead of PulseAudio (since it's bit-perfect and supports all different bit-depths and sample rates).
