Copy Controlled CD's
« on: September 09, 2003, 12:57:48 pm »

Hello, I just purchased the new Iron Maiden CD and noticed that it is copy controlled.

Is there anyway to rip copy controlled cd's? I just want to be able to listen to this on my Nomad....

Thanks,

What country do you live in?  I've heard copy protected cd's are rare in the US.

If you have a CDRoom and a CDW drive ,first ,try both.
Sometimes ,it works in one and not the other

Return it to the store.  Tell them it's defective.

No I don't want to return it. I like the cd... I listened to it on my home stereo....

Hmm what a shame.... I will find a way.

I just hope that this is NOT the way that cd's are going to work...

Supply and Demand.

If you keep it, it is the way cd's are going to work.

If you (and everyone else) returns them as defective, they will stop releasing copy controlled cd's if they all come back defective.

You control the future.

You've paid for the CD - you own it - download it -  technically I'd imagine your fully within ur legal rights as you've already paid them the money to be able to listen to it.

Or.... a non-copy protected version of the album is sold somewhere else.  The US version might not be copy protected....  Just a thought.

I thought of that and the UPC that is available in Canada is also the one that is sold in the states. I think EMI Music is the only ones that distribute this album.

You could give it a try.

Hi Tim,
Just curious... Who makes that cd?

The one that I can't figure out is EMI...

Hi imjustagamer
Can you see the CD logo somewhere on the cover?
If yes I would bring the 'CD' back. A copy controlled CD doesn't fit the red book standard and therefore is not a CD but just a record (or whatever). So you purchased a CD and got something different. If we buy these records and don't complain we allow the MI to establish a new standard nobody of us wants. And at the end we can't use MC the way we want anymore.
Just my thoughts

In Europe we have this problem over a year now. After a few month they did exactly what you propose. They removed the CD logo and placed a hint (not possible to overread it): "On PC/Mac NOT playable".

And it's not just EMI. In Europe in fact ALL companys have their own copy protectet CD's today.

You don't have to wait a long time til this happens in US. Be prepared...

If this is in fact the way of the future, then all these company's that make a portable mp3 player will lose a ton.

All these Nomads and Ipods will be useless.
Philips has said that they are opposed to this and are in the works to create a recorable cd player that does not see any copt controll system.

No the CD I bought did not have the CD logo on it. I had no idea at all, how many people look for a logo before buying?

I don't think so. There are many ways to copy your CD to your portable (and this is not against the law). The stronger the problem grows, the more hints you will get.

After just one "wrong" buy you will look for it.

Notice: The "well known" samplers here in Europe had a really bad sell with their protected CD's in the past. The shops refused them to sell after some time, they just had a too high percentage refused. So just don't buy these CD's.

BTW, many of those 'CD's' are not playable on regular CD players either. Especialy on older ones. I've heard of one particular protected 'record'  that wasn't playable for 70% of the customers on  their players. The protection protects you from listening?

I use a CD player which is over 15 years old (ReVox B225). I'm able to play every copy protected CD with it (don't ask me why). All my PC's drives are lost. My DVD player has a time out.  Sometimes old machines are not bad.

I've seen the problem at my neighbour, not myself  because I simply refuse to buy this castrated disks. Will borrow me some of his and try on my historic Phillips CD204
(I know, but I stuck to this heavy duty old friend)
But even if it works there is no reason for me to buy records for $15 and preserve particular hardware to get the honour of permission to listening

I saw that in France one customer took a label in court after buying a protected cd not playing in her car.
She got the help of national consumers union.

And she won.

Few months ago, Zdnet.France did a test concerning Sony protected cds.
They found  around 30% of cdr and cdrw drives able to read and rip the cds.
One of it was .... A SONY DRIVE......

Anyway if the last Iron Maiden out here ,i will borrow it from a shop ,put it on my server in APE and contact you about how to get it.

As i say the problem with terrorists is that they never kill the right people...AND I MEAN IT
