If this has any interest, I will ofcourse adapt it to fit
the default theater view items.

It will be easy to change the background for your own liking,
and it will also be easy to change the icon just above the text.

Both the background and icon will change as you sroll the menu (Roller),
on the second roller only the icon will change, and background will stay.

The skinn is based on the Rapier skinn for XBMC.

Hope you like it.

Looking really promising... hard work? Standard view view skins certainly take a lot of time to do right.

Nahhh, not hard work, but fun work.

I just wanted to do something completly different than the other skinns
that is for theater view.

So I looked at some skins from XBMC, and liked the one called Rapier.

My problem is that I knew nothing about how to do it,
so I just tried to edit the xml file, and edit it again, and again, and again .................

Not everything is how I would like it to be, but it works smooth
and I think it looks great.

I have a lot of ideas for other skinns.....

But I think I need help with somethings,
but until now I just play with it to get a hang of it.

On the first image you can see the image behind the menu stands out,
but as soon as I press an arrow on keyboard to get to the next item in the menu
the image gets unclear.

Can someone help with this.

Big props for taking a stab at those config files and discovering more creative options! :)
A few thoughts:

1)
And last the file Base 22a.xml needs to be put in Skins / Theater view / shared

I personally don't like this structure. A skins should be self contained as much as possible. Sharing files and configs and common folders for all skins it's a JRiver invention that I disagree with. Since the path can be easily referenced anywhere you put that file, it can be in the same folder with the skin and you have one less instruction to give people where to move what.

2) There's a small pointer error in main.xml, line 81 that prevents the icon for Images to show up (Location="Billeder"  should be Location="Images" ).

Keep up the good work! If only JRiver would give us more stuff to work with...

Ok.

Crash: when change language (for example, portuguese) dont show background in "playing now", audio and playlists. Also, dont show Pictures (thumbnail) in Video (Pictures\Video.png).

More, dont show correctly "Second Roller" in resolution 1366 x 768.

Fabricio, from Brazil.

About the language, at the moment I have no idea how to fix this ?

I would like the background image to change more smoothly,

The menu item images. The animations is a bit to much in your face imo. If I can easily remove it, this will probably be my new standard skin. Very nice with the extra info and graphics on the main menu. And the clock in every view is a nice touch.

In the document, Main.xml

Find where it says:

Quote
First Roller

        <Item Bitmap="Pictures\DVD.png" Location="DVD" Rect="45,63,55,80," Alpha="90" Alignment="3" />
   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\Audio.png" Location="Audio" Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="80" Alignment="3" />

        <Item Bitmap="Pictures\Exit.png" Location="Exit" Rect="45,63,55,80," Alpha="90" Alignment="3" />

   Second Roller

   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\movies.png" Location="Movies" Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="70" Alignment="90" />
   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\shows.png" Location="Shows"  Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="70" Alignment="90" />

   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\netflix.png" Location="netflix" Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="70" Alignment="90" />
   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\youtube.png" Location="Youtube" Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="70" Alignment="90" />

   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\home videos.png" Location="home videos" Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="70" Alignment="3" />

   <Item Bitmap="Pictures\explorer.png" Location="Explorer" Rect="45,63,55,80" Alpha="70" Alignment="90" />

And delete all of this.

Make sure it is this you delete, as other places in the document look familiar.

Oh. I did not mean the images them self. But the animation where the image fly into the screen and merges with the image/icon. The white/gray shapes going from bigger to smaller.

*EDIT*
No, it's actually the background of the previous menu item. I just noticed it now. So, the correct name for this would be background transition effect. I need to remove that.

Ahh OK

I think this is a problem, I cannot solve.

I have the same problem with the transition effect,
I also think it's not good looking.

That's why I wrote this request to the developers.

Is there any way this can be done,
I would like it to be like ex. how the backgrounds for movie and series
changes when you hoover over the coverarts, just at a much faster speed.

I think if these two requests would be applied.

Then there's nothing holding us back from making
just as nice looking skins as ex. XBMC and Media Portal.

First, this is very neat work.  Thanks!

As for the question of how to handle background images, I wonder if it would be better to allow themes to provide the background image per root roller selection?  In other words, those images would move from the skin to the theme.  That way, the handling of threaded loading and smooth transitions would be taken care of.  What do you think?

Also, I would recommend moving 'Base 22a.xml' into your skin folder.  It's fine to use shared resources when they're helpful but I think it's a little confusing for a third-party skin to add more.

Finally, put comments in the XML in blocks like this:
<!-- First Roller -->

In a coming build of v17:
NEW: Theater View themes support showing different images depending on the root roller selection (put images in [Theme Folder]\Root\Audio, [Theme Folder]\Root\Movies, etc.).

That sounds good Matt. But does that also mean that the transition will be slow by default? One of the major points with this skin in my opinion, is that the background changes fast so you see what you've selected. Not just by the text on the roller item, but the background as well. I fear that this change might make things rather slow? Am I right or wrong?

You're right MrHaugen, it needs to change the background just as fast as now, but with nicer transition.

I know i am asking many things  ;D but is this also possible ??

Quote
It seems like there are 2 layers for background images

<PICTURE>
    <Item Bitmap="Background.png" Rect="0,0,100,110" Alpha="100" Background"1" />
  </PICTURE>

You have today only working "Background "0" and "Background "1"

Would it be possible to add "Background "2"

If this could also be done it would eliminate this problem:

Quote
On the first image you can see the image behind the menu stands out,
but as soon as I press an arrow on keyboard to get to the next item in the menu
the image gets unclear.

Technically, I think it's best to use the theme engine for handling fullscreen backgrounds.  It will be most efficient (threading, resource usage, etc.), handle z-order correctly, and play nicely with the existing backgrounds.

As for timing, we'll try this next build:
Changed: Theater View themes use a faster fade when switching to a different set of images (but still the same fade time between images in a slideshow set).

Matt, the new changes does not work properly on my side after this changes. Tested with build 86.

I've tried removing this in the skins main.xml
Code: [Select]
Backgrounds

<Item Bitmap="Pictures\backgrounds\Audio.jpg" Location="audio" Rect="00,00,100,100" Alpha="40" Background ="1" />
<Item Bitmap="Pictures\backgrounds\video.jpg" Location="video" Rect="00,00,100,100" Alpha="40" Background ="1" />
<Item Bitmap="Pictures\backgrounds\Images.jpg" Location="Images" Rect="00,00,100,100" Alpha="40" Background ="1" />
<Item Bitmap="Pictures\backgrounds\playlists.jpg" Location="playlists" Rect="00,00,100,100" Alpha="40" Background ="1" />
<Item Bitmap="Pictures\backgrounds\gadgets.jpg" Location="gadgets" Rect="00,00,100,100" Alpha="40" Background ="1" />
<Item Bitmap="Pictures\backgrounds\exit.jpg" Location="exit" Rect="00,00,100,100" Alpha="40" Background ="1" />

Then I added the images to

C:\Media Center 17\Skins\Theater View\Themes\Rapier Fusion - Theme\......

\Audio\Audio.jpg
\Video\Video.jpg

Then I added the images to

C:\Media Center 17\Skins\Theater View\Themes\Rapier Fusion - Theme\......

\Audio\Audio.jpg
\Video\Video.jpg

and so on. This background are not picked up. What am I doing wrong?

It needs to be like this:

C:\Media Center 17\Skins\Theater View\Themes\Rapier Fusion - Theme\Root\Audio\Audio.jpg
C:\Media Center 17\Skins\Theater View\Themes\Rapier Fusion - Theme\Root\Video\Video.jpg

You need to make a folder called root in the theme folder.

Correcto! It never crossed my mind that Root was a folder  ::) Silly me.

I've tested with the main roller items now, and this is a HUGE improvement over the previous background transition style! It's a tad to slow for my keyboard movements on my test machine, but I think this will do just fine with a remote control on my HTPC.

I hope you can move the background files and change the XML files Xplain, so the rest of the users can take part of this improvement :)

Best MC theater view skin I've ever seen.  Just fantastic.  Backgrounds are very smooth, a noticeable improvement.

Two requests -  1)  add temp next to clock on every screen, and 2) if possible add choice to not have moving dot for current play position, just show the underlying text & numbers.  Moving dots for me just don't provide any information or usefulness.

Thanks - FastKayak / Larry

Very good, excellent skim, but don't working correctly "Second Roller" in resolution 1366 x 768.

Do you remember?

Hold breath  ;D

I made some more changes,
also to meet that it will fit other than 1920 x 1080.

Thomas

Crash: when change language (for example, portuguese) dont show background in "playing now", audio and playlists. Also, dont show Pictures (thumbnail) in Video (Pictures\Video.png).

Do you remember?

Found the problem is fixed for next build

Thomas

I'm sad ....,  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(  but very thanks.  Excellent work.

This was a big improvement. The background images now behaves nicely.

The problem left is the handling of the other images. Like those above the selected menu items. They also have this bad image transition. The images is zoomed out and leaves a trail of white/gray ghost images that is briefly on top of the next image. I wish that this whole behavior could be removed. There have to be something in the script, or in worst case, and internal code that does this. A way of preventing this behavior and just simply change the pictures would be the best. Preferably from within the skin it self.

I dont think the transition effect of these images is that bad,
but I dont have options to change this, if You want it to be different
we have to ask the developers.

Seems like Playing Now background, when you're actually in the window Playing Now is not working with themes,
if there are no backdrops for the artist it will use the main background of the skin,
and in this skin there are no main background.
But I think I maneged to get around it.

I have tested on my PC in both English and Portugese, and should work with next update.

The other problem I think will be fixed with the next update of Media Center
if I understand you correctly?

You make a good point. Note that none of the skins or themes for Theater View appear in the skin manager. Perhaps they should. It's certainly a logical place to put them. For now though, you can only set Theater View skins and themes in "Options > Theater View"

Today, I've opened up the xml and theme folders and set about fixing this up to fit with my own Theater View roller setup. The results are very pleasing indeed.

xplain, thank you so much for sharing this with us. Excellent work.

I know it might not be an ideal solution,
but if you change size to 80% instead of 100% it should work.

Options - Theater View - Apperance - Size:80%

The Video icon is a bit tricky, if I change language to Portugese or Albian or any other language it's shown on my PC

But never the less, I did a bit of fideling, and I maybe (Maybe) solved it.

Wait for next update.

This have actually been very much fun,
and I'm very glad that it have opened some doors.

The funny thing is, we have been asking for so many things to be optional and changeable for users them selves,
and JRiver have met us and done it, actually very fantastic.

The downside to this, I found out when doing this skin, it's actually very hard to make skin,
that will fit all the different settings users have.

One little thing is the size, as wrote to Fabricio, on the post just above this post.
The size setting moves the rollers.

Hey, and please make a sreenshot of your skin changes,
I want to see what you have done.

Hi Preproman

The Rapier Fusion Mod is not the original skin, but is a modification made by Marko, to fit hes needs.

You will have to download Rapier Fusion skin for the theater seets.

Download link: http://www.theganghut.co.uk/xplain/Rapier%20fusion.rar (http://www.theganghut.co.uk/xplain/Rapier%20fusion.rar)

Unpack the RAR-file, in the unpacked folder there is a PDF-file explaining what to do.

Great to see someone making Theater View skins for MC. Ever since I switched from XBMC, I have been thinking about making my own monochromatic/orange skin (with flat 2D icons), but never got around to it (because the whole scripting part is scaring me).

Anyway so I just installed this skin yesterday, and I have to say good job! This skin is by far my favorite one. My only gripes really are that I find the text a little difficult to read from a distance, and that I didn't particularly like the background pictures. So I gathered some less colorful background pics, for a more monochromatic look :)

I uploaded the theme here for those curious what I ended up with:

You are so right. If design had gotten a little more attention sometimes, there would be more people looking at MC as a possible replacement of their other inferior media centers. JRiver could at least think about bringing such themes and skins like this as their default Theater View experience. I'm sure that most skin developers would not mind if asked.

Hi xplain the rapier skin is amazing. I've had a go tweaking some things more to my liking, Just wondering is there anyway to achieve the following?

Lets see if I can explain clearly, I don't know all the names for all the different elements. Image 1 is located in Audio and then Albums under the secondary roller. I don't like that any selection after a secondary roller appears at the top like a button. It looks rather cluttered and messy. Could it be possible to move this information to the bottom like is illustrated in image 2? It would have to be un-selectable so it isn't really a button. Blue puzzle already has a slice at the bottom that has information on it. I like blue puzzle but the reason I reverted back to Rapier is because I believe it is wasted space throughout all menus. So ideally the slice at the bottom in image 2 would only appear after a selection has been made from a secondary roller.

Code 1
Code: [Select]
Replace([Album Artist], ;,/ & )
[Album]

Code 2
Code: [Select]
Replace([Album Artist], ;,/ & ) | [Album]

This other part might have to be a request to the devs. In image 1 audio and albums I normally use the code 1 expression below. I use this because is separates the Artist and album on separate lines, for the thumbnail images it looks better like that than having album artist and album on the same line like code 2. But it has a draw back, I like the the button at the top when making a selection to look like code 2 on the same line. Because if I use code 1 the button at the top (And hopefully will in future be at the bottom ;) ) it just cuts of like so, [Album Artist]...... (Like in image 3)

Doesnt matter which way round I do it something always ends up looking ugly,

So ideally I wish we could construct views using the best of both worlds, that could make use of two similar expressions in one view scheme. i.e.

Code: [Select]
Replace([Album Artist], ;,/ & )
[Album]&[Rollertext]=[Replace([Album Artist], ;,/ & ) | [Album]]

So the first expression would be the one to create the view (And also the list pane, so it would have the carriage return to make it look nice) and the other would merely output text to the roller and hopefully in the future the bottom "slice" as I call it.

Hope I have explained myself clearly.

Thanks Xplain

P.s sorry for the extended images, had two monitors active when I took the screenshots.

First of all ... I love the theme.  Thanks so much for all the work you put into it.

I wondered if there's a simple set of instructions anywhere on how to change the text and images for the different roller items ... I've added some custom ones to Theater View and there are no associated images or text to go with them by default in this theme.

I am really new to MC, so I am still trying to learn my way around it.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Is this works on MC 18 ?

Hi,

With MC 18 (last one), I've some APPCRASH (jriver.exe) at the startup with this skin. I've set the startup to the hometheater view.
The phenomenon is random (this not happens everytime...but often).

When going back to the default MC skin, no problem.

Is there any way to debug or to send "traces" ?

Regards.
