Title: NEW: Gizmo 2 -- Stream to Android, play to a DLNA Server, control Theater View
Post by: JimH on November 23, 2010, 03:31:55 pm
On your Android phone, chose the "Play Store" (formerly Market) icon and search for Gizmo.  Install it on your phone.

Start by connecting Gizmo to a Library Server.  This is done with the "Access Key" that MC15 can generate.  See Media Network in MC's Options and choose "Enable easy access..." or "Manage access..."  Copy the key that looks like "AbcDef" and enter it in Gizmo.

Now you can do the following:

1.  Play Here -- this lets you browse your library and stream audio, video, and images to your phone.

2.  Play on [Device] -- this plays to any zone or DLNA Renderer, including a copy of MC (if DLNA is enabled under Media Network).

3.  Theater View Remote -- a five button remote that lets you navigate in Theater View.  Press and hold the Green Button to start Theater View.

More about Gizmo (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Gizmo) on the wiki.

I will check this out in tomorrow when my phone gets back. I hope it is relatively simple to be able to connect to multiple library servers? For instance, my main 'library server' is where all my media is stored ans so where I would stream music from, however I wish to be able to control multiple other systems using the one device.

Press and hold any album, artist, or track to get options including "Play".

The phone's hardware buttons for volume, menu, and back should all work.

The source must be a single Library Server.  The destination can be any DLNA device and the phone itself.  Multiple destinations work.

I have/had Gizmote .157 and an older version of Gizmo installed on the EVO.

I see that Gizmo will be the application moving forward, so I installed Gizmo .158, as suggested above.

When I launch it, it seems to be still opening in my web browser window and takes me to a (new?) homescreen.  it says webplay along the top and shows the main Audio, Image, Video, Playlist options, but none of the play to... or remote options that Gizmote shows.

Do I need .158 installed to get the full functionality, or have they not merged yet?  Your instructions above seem to indicate Gizmo should show the play to options, but I could easily be missing something.

Thanks again for all the work on this, it's truly appreciated.

That sounds like a webpage shortcut, not the program.

Maybe uninstall everything, then install Gizmo from the market again.

You should see a welcome screen that asks for a library server key the first run.

Subsequent runs auto-connect and show a browse (or remote) screen.

It did ask for the key and user/password when I launched it, however, it looks like it didn't install the newer version of Gizmo, although it looked like it did.

When I went to uninstall it from the market, it showed "install", but when I tried to install, it just tried downloading forever.  I un-installed Gizmo version 15.0.142 along with Gizmote 15.0.157 using Titanium backup (great program  ;))

When I tried to install it after that, it still hung up trying to download, so I restarted the phone.

It installed; and now, it seems, I'm "on the bus", which makes me happy.

thanks.

FYI, while playing an audio playlist, I clicked on the menu, brought up the transport controls, selected the one on the left to bring up the playing now list (NICE!) and was able to touch on another track, and that track played, and when I clicked the button again to bring back the album cover view, it still showed the cover from the song playing when I left this view to pick the new track.

i clicked back to the playing now list and the former track was still showing highlighted in black, looking like it thought that was the selected track, which would explain the cover view.  clicking the other track again just restarted the track playing over but the image did not change.

clicking on next changed track and cover to the correct, and all worked well again.

it is still not playing video on the EVO, when selected from a playlist, in case it was supposed to work; I'm not sure the status.

I'm not sure if the the EVO is supposed to show itself as a playback device/zone on a client machine connected to the library server, but it doesn't.

the client also does not show up as an option to play to from the EVO.

not sure if it's supposed to, but would be cool if it did :)

sorry, just throwin' 'em out there as I'm playing around.

when skipping tracks, any track that does not have cover art just continues to show the previous artwork.  this happens when skipping in either direction.

When playing images, the speed is great.  it changes images very fast, nice work!!

as I was clicking next very quickly, just to see how fast it could go, i got a force close, but it's been okay since.

it would be cool if launching images while playing music acted as it does on the server, which is to say it just adds the images to the still playing music.  I could understand if the bandwidth caused it to be one or the other, but it would be cool.

When you rotate to landscape mode the transport controls fall off the bottom of the screen, so having some other way to advance the images would be useful.  flicking as someone else suggested would be VERY cool.

having the ability to start a slideshow would be nice also.  perhaps by just moving a slider from one side (no show) to the other with decreasing time between images (down to 1 or 2 seconds maybe).  letting you easily select the timing between images.

Ya'know, as I think about it, with the kickstand on my EVO, while plugged in at the office, if you could make a slideshow force the screen to stay on, I have a great little digital picture-frame.  Combined with music playback, that would be pretty cool.

I tried selecting an image playlist with lots of subfolders and it FC'd both time.  I sent the log from those crashes, I don't know if you get those.

I think that's all for now.

nice work so far, thanks again

2.  Play on [Device] -- this plays to any DLNA Renderer, including a copy of MC (if DLNA is enabled under Media Network).

I can see "Play here", "Play to Server", "Connect to Server" and "Theater View remote" options but no "Play on [Device]" (which could be good when the ID gets here!).  Running V158 and updated Gizmo from the App Store
Thanks
Nathan

PS - my HW Vol buttons now work :)

The "Play to ..." options will list all the zones on the server.

If you have multiple zones or connected DLNA devices, they will appear.

If you have only a single zone, it will say "Play to server".

Thanks Matt,
After turning on my HTPC (connects using Library Server and UNC paths for the media) and ensuring that the "allow other DLNA devices to control Media Center" is checked I now from Gizmo have the following zones:
* Zone 1 (the Main PC where MC is running as the server for all devices)
* HTPC Zone 1
* HTPC Outside

Music plays fine but when I tried a video I got the : "Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files.  Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location"

In this setup is Gizmo controlling the HTPC o it just "plays" the file (I've got "play local file" checked), or is the Main PC trying to transcode the files and play it to the zones it sees? (if that makes sense)
Thanks
Nathan

A new Gizmo is on the Android Market now.  Auto connect works.  It implements "friendly name" to accompany each "access key".  This feature requires MC15.0.159 (not out yet).

Many thanks for this update. I can now say that the Gizmo is available via the market place on my HTC Wildfire.

I also like the combination of both apps into one and its relatively simple to switch between servers. Just a couple of points though

1) I already miss the options of add the standard button to the bottom of the remote. Please bring them back.

2) Is there any way to set up sensible names for the severs instead of seeing just the access key?

Couple of things:
1) Using the HW Buttons for Vol control you can go above 100% (very hard rock) - but no vol change after 100%
2) I'd expect that when you look at Playing Now you would see the list of queued tracks but you just see the coverart of the current track

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab this afternoon.  It's Android 2.2, 7 inch screen and similar in functionality to the Captiva/Galaxy phone.  I bought it with no plan, so I'm using my wireless LAN to test.  More about the Galaxy Tab here (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=60888.0).

The good news is that it works as expected running Gizmo.  Gizmo can connect to Library Server and stream.  It can connect and control MC, etc.  It's a lot nice interface on the "big" screen.

MC also sees it as a handheld and can sync to it.  The speaker on the Galaxy is pretty good for a small device.

Thanks to the Gizmo 2 developers for the great step forward with this release!

This message is truly just about my gratitude for the greatly enhanced usability and overall integration of my Android smart phone (HTC EVO) with my server and TV. Listening around the house to my own stash with headphones is fun again!

I'll start a wish list later, but this note is just to let you know that I, for one, really appreciate the extra effort that this upgrade shows. You've got my customer loyalty!

Hi Jim - in your research did you notice any with IRDa andy any RC Apps for Andriod?  These Tablets could make a great AV Controller but need to also be able to control traditional AV Equipment (unless there are other ideas like IR Blasters....)

I didn't look for any IR or RF options since I wanted it for Gizmo, which uses wireless network.

MC can control blasters, but it probably wouldn't work without some changes.

Again, off topic on this one but, the other thing I would realy like to be able to do connect to devices via RS232 not just IR (or even RF). Is there anything the JRiver have come across that would work with MC (and not cost the earth as a lot of RS232 cards seem to)

Hi everyone,

I already installed latest version of gizmo 2 on my NexusOne and MC 15.0.159. it really looks cool
just 1 problem, when trying to play a video on the device, it says you are on the bus and nothing happens
even I tried with a small file(1.2mb), no difference.
however, playing the music & images were excellent

thanks for the nice work

Welcome to Interact.  Thanks for the kind words.

Video requires conversion, and we're not quite there yet, but soon.  It should happen in the next month or so.

Love Love Love the Android development!  Really can't wait until I can ditch my NetRemote PDAs for a couple of Android Tablets running Gizmo 2 (or 3 or 4) :)
Awesome work guys.  You sure make easy work of the decision of whether or not to purchase an upgrade when those times come around.   Of all the software I've bought over the years my JRiver purchase has been the most consistently satisfying!

good to hear that, I thought it was my problem.
some suggestions:
1) trying to connect to my music, accidently I touched images instead which I don't have any in my MC library
caused gizmo a crash, however not an imporatant one really. maybe just an exception error thrown to gizmo by MC.
no idiot will try to access what he doesn't have.

2)after adding some images to my library and accessing from gizmo, I was thinking if only it could give me the phone operating system
functions, like pinch to zoom, ....

3) I guess this one been told a lot, a free real player(not just streaming) for android is awesome and it promotes for MC also
anyone getting familiar with MC makes him buy it I think

Thank you very much

MAN, this new GIZMO app is TIGHT. I really really like it.  The only thing it's missing now is the ability to stream video. I've love for it to stream mp4 video files out of the gate.

I don't know if this is the right thread but a feature request I'd like to see is in the authenticaion settings for the streaming Media Server.  It obviously allows you to share your library with other users by sending them an invite with a link to your library but the authentication options need more granularity. I'd like to be able to share out my library with another Android user using the Gizmo app, but limit their access to only be able to stream & play the music. Right now if I share the access code to my library (which I'm doing), they can  remote control my media server and play music back through my stereo which I don't want. Is this more granular authentication setting something that's in the works?

I love the integration of Gizmote and Gizmo.  I think I might even get the wife to install it on her phone (maybe).  I used this app during my excruciating long drive over the weekend and except for a few areas with bad cell reception, it worked great.

I don't know if it is just me, but if I click on the icon to view the playing now list and I get the list of songs, I can't scroll through the list.  I can only see the first 5-6 songs in the list.  I am using my htc evo.

I was also having some issues with the bluetooth transport controls, but I think it was a conflict on the phone with another music app that I can now safely remove.

Thanks,

Alex

I have the same phone, and the same limitation.

i also cannot find a way to make the playing now list start playing after it has been stopped.

in other words, when I stop playback, leave the house, come back, and want to just start the patio zone playing again, i can't just navigate to playing now, and hit play, I have to reselect a playlist for it to begin playing.

I'd like the transport controls to always be available or at least be able to force them to display so i don't have to navigate 10 steps to reselect the same playlist as was already selected for a zone.

Guys,

This is FANTASTIC!

Have to say, all this time I've been wondering why all the focus on DLNA but, since moving from WM6.5 to Android, it makes a little more sense.

Well done! I can't wait for video to be ready!

Hi,
When I try to "Show Files" under Playing Now, I get "Connection Error - There was a problem communicating with the server - Retry/Cancel". If I hit 'Retry', the screen remains black but I can go back to the menu.
I use the latest version of MC15 and Gizmo (15.0.159). The problem occurs on a HTC Desire (Android 2.2). I tried restarting the PC (and MC) two times with no luck.

In using Gizmo the last few days, I've found a few things that are now easier.

1.  I can play music on the HTPC system without turning on the TV.  That's big for me.

2.  If I'm in the next room, I can use my phone to adjust the volume or skip a track.

3.  Because it's wireless, I don't have to keep the cabinet doors open as I do when I use the MC Remote (because it uses IR).

4.  More than one Android device can act as a remote at the same time.  I'm using a Samsung Galaxy tablet and a Google Nexus One.  Either one can pause the playback or change the volume.

But when I'm on the couch and watching video, the MC Remote is usually my first choice.  Five buttons can do all I need once Theater View is running.  Left, right, up, down, and enter.  I especially like the way that enter / OK will pause video.

yeah, I've maybe used it a week since .159 was released, and I'm also very happy with Gizmo.  As for

1. HUGE is not an overstatement about how great this is!

2. Yes, very nice. I like that I can grab my phone, browse while I walk to the door to the back yard and select a playlist, hit play and have music AND my remote control of that music in my pocket while I work around the yard.

(allowing me to just hit play from a non-playing playlist would make this even better :))

3. I don't have a cabinet to open, but I like that I can use it from anywhere on my property.

RE: on the couch - I don't have a remote to go for, so the 5-button is where I need/want the help.

Since you prefer to grab the IR remote, there is obviously something 'else' on that control device that is better/available than the Gizmo 5-button.  If you can make the Gizmo a real replacement for the version you still prefer, you've got a winner!! :)

Can a pronto template be used as a guide for what 'else' needs added?

I'm thinking something like this would be more useful than just the 5 buttons, allowing one to control more than MC, if one wanted.

However, just a few essential extra buttons would be fantastic.

Love the direction this is taking! Good job. It'll bee cool if you get that video conversion to work! Then I just need an Android phone with HDMI port, and I don't have to bring movies with me on hard drives any more :)

I'm wondering if there is two things you could consider in future updates.

- Add mouse track pad support. An easily accessible button to switch between Arrows/enter and mouse with two buttons. Perhaps scrolling when touching up down on the right and left side? It would help those that don't have a mouse connected to the HTPC. Then I could ditch my other mouse remote program.
- What about enabling local music/video files as well? Might be a bit work, but it would be great to have ONE app for all media. Both streamed and local. There will always be times when you need local media. Either with high cost data traffic, or if the data connection is poor.

However, just a few essential extra buttons would be fantastic.

J river had some of these in the old gizmo, and I for one miss them. Although the 5 button approach is nice, I find that the phone looses connection form time to time, then button presses are missed. It is simply easier to have buttons that play, rewind, ff, skip etc, that cannot be easily accomplished by the 5 buttons alone. Maybe gesture control would be a great feature.

In addition, there is still something to be said for a remote with physical buttons. I use my Logitech Harmony the vast majority of the time. I can control multiple devices such as the TV, amp, V+ Box, DVD and HTPC all from one unit, and issue multiple commands at the same time. With another add on I should be able to control the PS3 as well. Until Gizmo can do all of this, then I can't use it exclusively. We did start another thread to talk more about this (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=60702.0) (with potentially RS232 control of devices that don't have DNLA), but my goal is to have one control interface that can work for all devices - I hope that one day this could be gizmo, but in that case 5 buttons simple wont cut it.

LOVE the new interface.  SO much faster/ efficient.
One thing I am still noticing is when I load a track I get "preparing" and then "Your on the  Bus" w/out tthe track playing.  I have to hit resume to get the track to play. I am using a Moto Droid

My wife has an HTC Incredible, and Gizmo is very unstable.  She say much of the time, she can't get more than one track to play without Gizmo stopping, and then losing connection. I have similar issues w/ my Droid, but far less frequently.

Keep up the development, the improvements you have made are huge!

Jim, .161 solved my problems with displaying the correct track length, and seems to have fixed the issue with certain files not playing. However, I am running into some buffering issues I've never encountered before.

New Gizmo on the Android Market.  Requires this build of MC:

When I try to "Show Files" under Playing Now, I get "Connection Error - There was a problem communicating with the server - Retry/Cancel". If I hit 'Retry', the screen remains black but I can go back to the menu.
I use the latest version of MC15 and Gizmo (15.0.159). The problem occurs on a HTC Desire (Android 2.2). I tried restarting the PC (and MC) two times with no luck.
Bump, still not working with .161 with European HTC Desire. Thanks for having a look.
Really nice app though.

Make sure you have the latest Gizmo (it's on the market).

Then, what happens if you try a smaller list?  It's possible doing 'Show files' on a huge list could timeout or cause a memory issue.

Is there anyway you can coordinate the releases of Gizmo and MC better.
Yesterday my phone updated Gizmo resulting in the app not working.
There is no mention of a new MC release or gizmo release on the main MC board.
Having just installed Gizmo and playing around with it, my assumtion was that I somehow messed something up.
If this is the board to check then a topic announcing the changes at the top would help save troubleshooting time.

On a positive note I managed to impress quite a few people when I showed them how I could stream music from home on my phone.

Having only recently bought an android phone (SGS) this is all quite new to me. Downloaded Gizmo yesterday and have been really impressed. I was about to give DLNA up for a bad job after the clunkiness of AllShare but Gizmo really has hit the nail on the head with the UI and functionality I was looking for. Thank you for yet another reason to be glad to be a MC user.

If you are open to suggestions, it would be great if the transport controls (play/pause, skip, maybe track info) could be implemented in to the drag down notification bar. Currently I have discovered the merits of using the Home key (rather than backing out fully with the Back key) as a way of being able to jump between Gizmo and dashboard; notification bar control would be the icing on the cake in terms of usability I think. A Widget may be another way of implementing this although you have access to the notification bar from more places. Really just a quicker way (than entering Gizmo) to skip or pause a track would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for the great android app! Just remembered the market has a rating system so that is where I am off now.

A widget would be the best approach I think. Without it, such apps is not 100% in my opinion. I've never seen direct control from the notification menu though. There is not much point is doing the remote control from a widget, but a couple of widgets would be really nice. One 1x4, 2x4 and 4x4 perhaps? :D

The music player that came with my phone (think it is the Android one? if not it will be Samsung) can be controlled from the notification drawer. I thought it would be the way to go as it is almost always available without needing to go back to the dashboard/desktop/homescreen (don't know its name).

e.g. I use a computer running MC as the source for my hifi in the living room and it is nice to be able to navigate and control music from my phone without the need of turning on the tv or using a keyboard and mouse. However, when using Gizmo I have essentially turned my phone in to a remote control and temporarily lost the rest of the phone's functions. If control were to be implemented in to the notification bar and I was in the middle of a text message/email/website and felt the need to pause or skip a track, I could just drag the notification bar down, hit a button and job done.

For me I would prioritise the notification bar over a widget although it would be nice in classic JRiver style to have both options. However, I don't know if this is even possible and Gizmo as it stands today is already a brilliant solution.

I haven't tried Gizmo 2 yet, but I did read the announcement and the wiki article on it. I am anxious to give it a spin.

I was wondering if there are any plans to make Gizmo a stand alone music player, i.e. it can play music files stored on the sd card. It doesn't seem very far being able to be one.

I was thinking about Gizmo when I saw the announcement of Winamp for Android and it's ability to do a wireless sync with the Winamp desktop application. I know there is no technical reason MC and Gizmo can't do this and such a feature would fit right in the growing MC media-system.

Yes, I know. Bad choice of words. Just thinking of the times you don't want, or can't, stream tons of data. Nah, it's not super important for now. Notification tray controls or a simple Widget is more pressing I think. I'll manage with Spotify and Winamp when I'm not home.

+1 on the notification bar controls
+1 for widget controls and
and my own variation on widget request:
+1 for widget control on the lock screen like some of the existing Android players have so you can pause, next etc without even unlocking.

I'd also love to see Gizmo handle local music on the SD card, wireless syncing of my playlists to my Android etc.

A hard core Apple fanboy was over last night and I showed him Gizmo on my phone - he was blown away.  Then I let him have access to WebPlay on his iPhone.... he left mumbling something about finally having something to utilize his 6GB data plan on.... I think I may have just converted another lost soul over to the MC world.
 ;D
Keep up the awesome development!

I use WidgetLocker to put any widget on my lockscreen. With this solution, you don't have to choose between the 1,000 apps which have a locksreen feature.
So +1 for widget only...

A better "playing now" view and additional commands (Reshuffle / Reshuffle remaining) could be nice too.

Title: How configure Gizmo/MC so 'Play to server' works with a PS3 (DLNA renderer)
Post by: sfroach on December 15, 2010, 10:08:07 pm
Hello,
I have latest version of MC & Gizmo on my PC & Android HTC Incredible.
MC plays OK on my PC .
I’m also able to stream FLAC music via a PS3 (DLNA renderer) on a stereo in a different room. However, this requires the plasma display to be the user interface for the PS3.
Gizmo has the MC generated code.
Gizmo ‘Play here’ plays to the Android device OK
Gizmo ‘Theater View remote’ controls MC running on the PC OK.

How do I get Gizmo to ‘Play to server’ with the server being the PS3 (DLNA renderer)?
My goal is to NOT have the plasma display be the user interface; but to use my Android for the UI.
Thanks,
Steve

Welcome to the forum.
I don't think the PS3 is a DLNA Renderer.  If it doesn't appear in the list of servers and renderers, it may not be.

Edit -- It is a Renderer, but it is not controllable.  You can't push content to it.  It can only pull content from a DLNA Server.

Thanks for the reply.

I found the Sony Playstation3 on http://www.dlna.org/products/  under Product Category = Game Console.

The PS3 IS listed as being a DNLA server.

When I'm streaming uncompressed L16 no header format (converted from FLAC - PS3 unsupported) from MC to the PS3 everything works OK as long as I use the PS3 user interface on the plasma display.

I want to continue  streaming to the PS3, but use Gizmo on my Android as the user interface for MC. This frees up the plasma display to be off or viewing other muted content.

Shouldn't this be possible?

Thanks,
Steve

No.  A device has to be a controllable Renderer for that to work.  Please see our wiki article on DLNA for definitions.

In your example, the Android is the DLNA Controller, MC is the DLNA Server, and the PS3 would be a DLNA Renderer.  But the PS3 can't be controlled by the DLNA Controller.

Ha,
Wiki is very helpful.

Is it correct to describe a PS3 as a DLNA Player, because it can't be controlled by MC?

So to accomplish my goal, I need to replace the PS3 with a DLNA Renderer like a WD TV Live Plus?

Thanks,
Steve

It may be right to call it a DLNA Player.  I'm not sure.

Are you trying to play audio only?  Or more than that?
Title: Re: NEW: Gizmo 2 -- Stream to Android, play to a DLNA Server, control Theater View
Post by: sfroach on December 16, 2010, 07:21:27 pm
I use the PS3 as a media extender for photo's & internet video so I'm just looking for an audio device.

I'm looking for a high quality audio DLNA Renderer which can be controlled with Android Gizmo and/or a Pronto remote (with LCD).

My audio format is FLAC so ideally the controlable DLNA Renderer will natively play FLAC or the Uncompressed L16 no header format.

I'm hoping for an alternative to building an HTPC with MC sharing an audio library (with my existing MC PC).

Thanks again,
Steve

I've been using the latest version of Gizmo on my Galaxy Tab over the last 3-4 days, and it's absolutely fantastic. It's fast, reliable and responsive. One thing I'm missing: Possibility to see the entire Playing Now list. From what I can see, now you're only able to see the track currently playing.

tried some small videos (2-5 mb) at first a weird thing happened, touching a file played another file in my video library  ?  :)
but after 3-4 attempts it did the job correctly.

it's a good start. glad to see the video.

I noticed the same thing with Gizmo recently (maybe only after upgrading to the newest version?), where I selected a playlist, but got all my files playing.

Turns out, the smartlists that referenced another smartlist all got corrupted, so it was not limiting to the smartlist excluding to only the files I wanted, and instead was playing everything in my library.

I had to "correct" all of my smartlists to fix this issue.  I don't know for sure when it happened, but it was definitely within the last week, and last couple of builds of MC and Gizmo.

Once I fixed the smartlists, everything works again.

Me too,  but otherwise working great!

This is on my Archos 101IT (posting this from it).

Quick wish list:
* Show previous/next cover art and use swiping to switch tracks, at least in landscape mode
* Tap on cover art to play/pause
* Make the play button show || when playing,  l> when paused.   It seems really strange to click "play" to pause...
* Access to full file list using icon for remote zones
* Ability to re-order and otherwise change the playlist

Press and hold any album, artist, or track to get options including "Play".

The phone's hardware buttons for volume, menu, and back should all work.

What about enabling the search button on the android device as a shortcut to the search on Gizmo?

I think I found two bugs with the Gizmo App
1. For some reason the Gizmo app is playing tracks out of sequence of the album.  I don't know why it's doing that but I can't figure out why when the sequence plays fine with MC on my pc.
2. When I long press a track/album to start playing on Gizmo, the album art cover is displayed & the track starts playing. then if I hit the back key to go back to an albums then long-press another album & click Add to add more songs to Playing Now, it then goes to the Playing Now screen but it doesn't display the correct album art. It displays the Gizmo program icon as the album art.  don't know what that's about either.

Any chance of this being implemented in Gizmo?

Is the cache supposed to appear in the location set in Tools-> Options..File Location?

Mine is set at F:\Documents\My Videos\J River Conversion Cache\ , but after trying to play several videos, that folder is empty.

My videos are on a NAS and play fine from the server.

A newer build of Gizmo can be found here:

[moved to the Android Market]

15.0.175 / 23 (January 12, 2011)

1. Faster: Improved browsing performance with a future server.
2. Changed: Improved the quality of browse thumbnails.

15.0.174 / 22 (January 11, 2011)

1. Changed: 'Here' zones exposed by a server will show with the name
'Server' (instead of showing two Here zones).
2. NEW: Added support for the hardware search button.
3. Changed: When switching modes between playback targets, the browse or
search context will not be disc
4. Fixed: Possible battery drain issue when leaving program in Playing
Now stopped when switching to other programs.
5. Fixed: Long-clicking root items like Search or Commands would show
invalid menu options.
6. Faster: When viewing files while browsing, less fields are requested
from the server -- reducing server load and bandwidth substantially.
7. Changed: Removed 'Show files' menu option from root choices.
8. Faster: Improved performance of core web service calling / parsing
engine.
9. Changed: While playing, the play button shows a pause graphic.
10. Fixed: Browsing images could fail to show for some items in certain
cases.
11. NEW: Added a 'Reshuffle' command to the commands menu.
12. NEW: When viewing an image, the menu allows setting the image as the
wallpaper.
13. NEW: New image viewing system with gallery slider (gallery hides
automatically, can also tap image in non-gallery area to hide, tap in
gallery area to show).

A newer build of Gizmo can be found here:

http://www.jriver.com/install_gizmo.html

15.0.174 / 22 (January 11, 2011)

2. NEW: Added support for the hardware search button.

Nice. Search is only usable for songs at this point, since searching for an Artist or Album only let's you play the entire Artist or Album, instead of letting you click through. (edit makes this coherent)

Quote
11. NEW: Added a 'Reshuffle' command to the commands menu.

I noticed you also made some changes to the play commands, adding (Shuffle) and removing (Add > as Next). I really hope these will be customizable in the future.
Also, short-tapping a song currently initiates a (Play) command instead of opening the Play menu.

Quote
12. NEW: When viewing an image, the menu allows setting the image as the
wallpaper.
13. NEW: New image viewing system with gallery slider (gallery hides
automatically, can also tap image in non-gallery area to hide, tap in
gallery area to show).

I like the gallery slider. One question; is the system converting images for viewing? If so, where are they being stored?

Yes.  The server converts images to the display size (normally the screen size of your Android).

The gallery strip uses thumbnails and playback uses the full image.

Converted images are not stored (save for the RAW cache if you're using RAW images).

Which phone do you have?

windows mobile HTC HD2 windows mobile removed and flashed with DFT_LEO_NAND_Android

droid version - 2.2 - Build 2.29.405.5
software version - 2.29.405.5

when i chose here it worked that time(but i did it differently)... maybe im not understanding full layout\commands yet. steps i took...

what you want to do? choose where to play, chose Here, chose audio, , ratings, 5, adult party mix then i chose commands and play. and it just stayed on the commands page and didnt play the adult mix... NOW if i continue on so adult party mix, then choose artist, then album, then choose a SINGLE song in that mix (basically you would be as far as you can go in the tree) it plays automatically\instantly (not having to use commands) so basically commands are not playing when i choose play. and gizmo will only play one song at a time.

Now if i choose play on server - audio, ratings, 5, adult party mix, commands play. the same thing it just stays on commands screen, BUT jriver on server plays whats ALREADY in the playing now(if nothing in the playing now) then it wont play anything, and gizmo stays on commands screen.

also for using gizmo for remote - and choosing playing now, i see the current track, how do i see the whole playing now list? the songs after the playing now\ or before the current playing song.. meaning if song is playing now, and i want to go back 10-20-50 songs in playing now. how do i accomplish this?

commands isn't for that... it purely triggers those controls on the server. It's not about operating on the selection in Gizmo. It's separate from the playback, if you see what I mean.

All you need to do is select where you want to play (e.g. from the header at the top of the interface) then browse through to the media you want to play. Once you're at the track level, it will just play when you click on it. If you want to operate on the files before you get to the file level, just do a long press, and the options will come up as a pop-up menu.

Once you're playing on your android, you'll get the cover art and five buttons at the bottom. The left one of those toggles you between the current playing now list and the cover art.

I'm using Motorola i1, firmware v1.5 on Nextel system. JRMC15 at version .172
Gizmo quit working. I uninstalled Gizmo and Gizmote. Gizmo no longer shows in market. I downloaded from link on forum. It won't install.
Any suggestions?

The link you should use is the one in the Market for your phone.  If it doesn't show up there, then the phone may not be capable of running Gizmo.

If your device cannot access the Market, you can download Gizmo here: http://files.jriver.com/gizmo/Gizmo.apk

As I said, I downloaded it and it won't install. Is there any limitation on the firmware version of Android?

When i chose to play? at server or HTPC in gizmo2 it shows the track playing and only 4 buttons, not getting the playlist button when connecting to server, as i do if i choose to play here. (anyone else confirm)

Another thing i've noticed (maybe someone can confirm as well) when choosing what do you want to do? if you choose a client who connects to server it will control it but it will not show the cover nor the name of file for that client.

i'm wondering if this has to do with this topic by any chance? (last post describes problem in standard view not gizmo, but maybe there is a correlation?) http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=61666.msg414433#msg414433

That is working for me with a DLNA renderer Philips NP2900.

I thought you were refering to Gizmo not displaying data when you were pushing music to the client, talked too fast sorry.
Anyway, I think some DLNA clients won't display the metadata. I also own another DLNA audio renderer Philips WAS7500 and it doesn't show the song played. Also the volume can't be controlled through DLNA.
Maybe, you can try to check the DLNAExtra option...

no you were correct ;)

i was talking about both gizmo 2 and clients pc's connecting to server or clients.

if you hav e server for all media, and clients and are using gizmo - then when connecting to server with clients (my clients being other pc's) on the server itself you cannot see what is playing on the clients. and when clients are playing and you connect to them with gizmo you cannot see what the clients are playing either. but you can control them.

my setup:

server  - all clients connect to it.
in server under playing now, if i choose htpc client. i cannot see thumbs or the file that is playing in the standard view display text. but i can control the htpc(play, pause, stop, load files etc) they just never show up in clients playing now on server.

same with gizmo, if i choose what do you want to do? choose where to play - htpc it controls the htpc playing now. but no cover art shows, and no name. so you have no clue what is going on in theater room on that client.

It looks like it's only possible to control the "Playing Now" of the PC client with Gizmo (or with the server) through DLNA (and not through the Library Client feature).
It implies that:
- when the "Playing Now" of the PC client is set and controlled from Gizmo or the server, it shows the data properly. On the client it will show one song at a time, all you can do is control the playback with play, pause or stop.
- if you set the "Playing Now" directly from the client, the "Playing Now" of the client won't be reflected to the server or Gizmo.
Make a test by disconnecting your PC client from your library server.
Settings for DLNA are:
- on the server: Library Server, DLNA Server and DLNA Controller ticked
- on the client: DLNA renderer ticked
Then control your PC client with Gizmo.

PS: the fifth button (Playing Now list) will show if you choose to "Play Here" on Gizmo... which is not what we're looking for...

I dont like to power my pc on first before using gizmo, it makes the remote feature a bit useless/incomplete...

There are many wol apps on the android market, perhaps you can integrate one of them (because of open source perhaps...)

I believe that's just an Ethernet interface option.  Control Panel/Network/Manage Adaptor/Configure...

what do you mean by "thats just a ethernet interface option"?

what i want is to wake up my pc with j.river mediacenter installed, so  i an use gizmo with that pc.

For that gizmo has to send a magic paket in to my lan/wan to wake up pc that are connected via lan and are ready for wol.
THis is possible with f.Ex. https://market.android.com/details?id=de.thedelmann.wol

but there are many other apps: https://market.android.com/search?q=wol

perfect would be that with starting gizmo, gizmo would send that magic packet automatically if the server is not recognized...

Hi!

First, sorry to JRiver for posting a little all over the place, I have been a bit confused about where to post what. Just noticed this thread, which seems like the source of all information regarding Gizmo.

To the real matter; Should Gizmo now be able to play video files on demand, and not after a conversion? I can't seem to get it working very well yet, but I have been trying with a semi-official version 16.0.36 posted by JimH in MC15 thread.

It would be such a cool feature to flash friends, as well as using it to show off my 4 months old daughters swimming skills  ::)

actually you're right if gizmo connect throught the library server is more efficient but me i have a small problem with my ISP that would not allow traffic for media center even i asked him for that!
so what i'm saying if gizmo could connect under the same network without using the access key the same as a dlna connection!
as for me of course i prefer the library server on a dlna device!

My main goal right now is getting a tab I can use as a control for my JRiver library. I was thinking on getting a Windows 7 tab and use the full J river client to connect to the library but I would rather get a Android tab because I doubt the Windows tabs can show any decent performance.  It does not look like J River will make much more with Gizmo or WebRemote in near future thousgh and as it is now its far away from what I would like.

I would like to see a Android app looking and working like  J Rivers Theater View or somthing like Sonos solution.

I started to investigate the abillity to make a Adobe Air application (works on Android) because I have pretty good knowlage about Flash and Air, but now Im thinking on having a go at making an native Android app for tabs like Samsung Galaxy or Motorola XOOM.

What is Play Doctor that you mentioned?

I'd like to find out if I can do the following in Gizmo...can't seem to find a setting for it if it already exists:

When I open Gizmo, I'd like it to default to opening my Audio folder. For some reason every time I start it, I get sent to the top level (even if I haven't killed the app!). Since I only use it to control audio, it'd be a nice to have...if I can't do that I'd like to be able to delete the Image and Video folder links.

Great application though! Allows me to control my outdoor stereo zone from my phone...which is totally awesome...

BTW running Droid Incredible Android 2.2

Thanks in advance for any help.

It's possible to create and remove root views, or to build a totally custom browsing hierarchy.

You can customize the views in: Options > Media Network > Customize views for Gizmo, WebRemote, & WebPlay...

Skipped songs are still getting scrobbled on Last.fm when played through Gizmo. Could you please add a percentage listen option to prevent this? It would be nice if it was configurable, but even a hard-coded percentage (like 50%) would be better than the current setup.

Love the new image viewing, though, sadly, I cannot find the words to describe how deeply disappointed I was that I still cannot advance to the next picture by swiping across the screen...

yeah, it was available to me, and installed fine, and seems to work fine so far.  i got one force close, but i was playing around quite a bit with it, so I may have caused it myself.

I has just assumed (yes, i know) that i couldn't install a version of Gizmo more 'advanced' than the version of MC that I'm using, which is currently .87

and yes, I agree, it looks much nicer.  It's about time I spent some time customizing the views for Gizmo, since the default ones don't help much with images and videos.

thanks for pointing out the new, cooler version :)

We have 2 Android devices that were working fine with Gizmo until it auto updated to the latest version from the Android market.  I'm running 15.074 of Media Center.  Now playback stops 90% of the time after 1 song, sometimes lasts 2 or 3 songs before stopping and requiring a click of "Resume playback" on the phone.

One phone is Nexus S on Android 2.3.4 the other is LG Eve on 1.6.

Is there a fix for this?  I restarted the server, and the phones.  Wifi network setup hasn't changed.

If no fix how do I roll it back to the prior version of Gizmo on the phones?

Please help.

Hi!

Let me first say I love the Gizmo feature, it's one of the main reasons I made the jump from Windows Mobile to Android. However, I have a few problems.

First of all, the Theater View Remote feature is great, but the problem is, I normally start the video first and then enter the remote mode. But then I have to press the green button to activate the enter button in the middle which stops the video and goes into theater view. Then I have to select exit theater view to resume the video. Every time I leave Gizmo to make a call or use my phone for anything else, I have to do this all over again. Is this really the way it's supposed to be? It makes me just use my wireless keyboard most of the time. Why can't there just be some view selection buttons on top of the screen above the arrows and enter?

Also, when in playing now mode, when playing a video, I'd like the previous and next buttons to seek in the video (like pressing left/right on the keyboard) instead of jumping tracks. When playing video I only have one file in the playlist most of the time anyway, rendering those buttons pretty much useless. Is this configurable somewhere, or can a configuration of the playing now buttons be added, please?

Another feature I would like to see in Gizmo in the future is a configurable remote screen with buttons to control external devices through IR (since MC already has this functionality already). Maybe with support for CCF files, or some kind of editor within MC? Add Girder control (for lighting etc.) to that, and Gizmo would be a full featured home control remote :)

First of all, the Theater View Remote feature is great, but the problem is, I normally start the video first and then enter the remote mode. But then I have to press the green button to activate the enter button in the middle which stops the video and goes into theater view. Then I have to select exit theater view to resume the video.
Try hitting the green button a second time.
Quote

Also, when in playing now mode, when playing a video, I'd like the previous and next buttons to seek in the video (like pressing left/right on the keyboard) instead of jumping tracks.
That's what it should do.  We'll check.
Quote
Another feature I would like to see in Gizmo in the future is a configurable remote screen with buttons to control external devices through IR (since MC already has this functionality already). Maybe with support for CCF files, or some kind of editor within MC? Add Girder control (for lighting etc.) to that, and Gizmo would be a full featured home control remote :)
Maybe some day, but not soon.

Hitting the green button again is not an option, because when I hit it, it disappears and becomes the enter button. But as I press it, Theater view opens, stopping the currently playing video file. I then have to press right/left to select Exit, then confirm exiting Theater view, and then the video resumes. And if I then leave Gizmo to answer a call or whatever, when returning to Gizmo the green button has replaced the enter button, and I have to go through the above procedure again to be able to use it as a remote with arrows/enter.

I just checked again, and while playing a video file, the << goes to the start of the video and >> button does nothing in Playing now view, which I assume is because they are previous and next, and I only have one file in the playlist. If they're supposed to act like search forward and search backward like left and right arrows on the PC keyboard, that makes much more sense when playing video files, as I can't really imagine any need for next and previous buttons when playing video unless you're watching music videos.

Now, in case you misunderstood, the left and right arrow in Theater view remote mode work like left and right on the PC keyboard, but the Theater view remote mode is pretty much useless until I can bypass being forced into Theater mode when I'm in the middle of a video. I don't need Theater mode when I have the same as Theater mode on the screen of my phone!!!! I'd like to just start Gizmo, select my video in Gizmo (which automatically starts it) and then get the left/right/up/down/enter pad on my Gizmo screen without any force-me-into-Theater-mode-green-button where the enter is supposed to be. It should be just arrow pad remote, not Theater view remote!

The Gizmo on the Market is the latest version. 16.0.111. So it seems like they skipped from 2 to 16 ;)

Not sure if this is feature request or use question.  I've been using gizmo quite a bit.  And Gizmo by the way.... is just about everything I've ever wanted for playing music around my house.  Pick the zone/server depending on where I am..... change volume.... pause and answer the phone.  Great work... Great App!!!!!

I would like to do the following via the search icon.  Is this possible?

- Search by Artist
- pick an album by that artist
- Pick a track on that album
- add to playing now... or  add as next to play

Right now to accomplish this it seems I have to go to the home screen...audio...artist...album... then remember the song I want.  Then go search for that song via the search Icon... and then add it to playing now.  I'd rather be able to drill to a track listing... and then choose a track to add to playing now.  hopefully this makes sense.  Anyone else tried to go down this road?

The search feature in Gizmo just isn't very usable right now. Another issue is that if you search for a song name and add it, it will play every song with that name, from every artist in your library. Between cover versions, greatest hits and live versions, having duplicate song names is a pretty common affair.

I'm having some Gizmo issues and have a couple of questions as well.

Running Gizmo 16.0.111 on my HTC Incredible with Android 2.2.  Running MC 16.0.121 on my Windows 7 PC with core i3 2100 processor.

Each time I start Gizmo, it authenticates and begins working, I click Audio, then it goes back to the launch screen and authenticates again.  I then click Audio, and as an example, Artists-->Otis Redding-->All Albums then back to the access key.  Then trying again I can get all the way to playing the first track of She's All Right.

Sometimes it takes a few more tries and sometimes I get an error about the access key not being valid.  If I exit the application entirely and use task killer on it before going back in I can get the access key to be accepted.

Once playing I have very few problems.  But I can't seem to be able to consistently launch the app on the first try (really never).  Any ideas?

My question is about settings.  I have my collection ripped in WAV format as space is not a concern.  In the Media Network settings I have audio conversion in the Client Options set to Always convert audio and MP3 medium bandwidth as the encoder.  I want to make sure that is only being converted when playing through Gizmo and not when I am playing things locally directly from my PC running JRiver and containing my library to my audio system.

Thanks for any help the community can provide.

That's not normal.  It's as if the network connection is dropped just after you connect.

Try resetting your login and password on the server.  Try generating a new Access Key.

Perhaps something (router or firewall) on the server side is closing the connection.

Does it work if you're on your own LAN?

On my LAN I was able to replicate the issue once, then trying again it began playback without issue.  Closed the app, used task killer and tried again and playback began without issue as well.

I do have port 52199 forwarded in my router a linksys/cisco WRT310N.

I asked my wife who has an LG Ally if you experienced similar issues and she said that it happened every now and then, but not consistently as I have found with my phone.

I am not sure how to reset my server password.  I can generate a new key if needed, but that doesn't seem to be the issue.

New key generated and problem persists.

As a I go down through the layers, of audio, artists, etc. it fails the deeper I go.

Also got this message:  There was a problem connecting to the server.
Please double-check that you have entered the correct key, and that the server and your connection are working.

I click ok, then the go button and it connects and goes to the main page with audio, images, etc.

After about 5 failures I was able to get a track to play.

Thought I had it figured out with a couple changes in Windows firewall settings, but that didn't resolve the problem.

The only thing I can seem to pinpoint is that my green hard drive causes the failure when it is not spinning.  I have been able to go to my pictures, get the drive spinning there, then go back to audio and get it to work right away.

I have borrowed a samsung galaxy s2 for a couple of days, and im playing around with Gizmo. First of alle the app looks very very nice. Good job. I have a little question though, if i set a playlist/album or whatever to play, i get a display from playing now, where i can skip/pause and so on, and a image of the cover-art. This is nice and all, but more or less only a glorified remote. Is there a way to get a more "list-style" playing now, where i see the file playing, the next few files and I can choose the next song to play and so on?

You should see a list icon in the lower left corner of Playing Now.

You can get to Playing Now by holding down the home icon in the upper left.

Here's a Gizmo request:
I would love to see the video-list as a cover view just like the audio-list (gridview in android terms). It would be nice to be able to switch between cover-view or list-view but cover-view only would be fine as well  :D
Now when I can use MC and my android-tablet for my blu-ray collection as well (yayh!) it would be more fun to see the covers of the movies instead of just the title and a small thumb in a list. List-views does not look that nice on a tablet when they strech across the entire screen. A suggestion would be to give tablets more and more focus when developing Gizmo. I belive Im not alone in using one and more will come. Keep up the good work!

Hmm, you are right, I do see a list icon in the lower left of playing now, but only if i add my songs through the "audio"-icon, if i go to "playlist" and chose onw of them, the list-icon is no longer in the playing-now-screen. Could it be a possible bug, or is this intended behaviour?

Thanks for the feedback, now at least i know the reason, and +1 on getting the list with more than 100 songs.

A second question, under "commands" there is a list of commands, is it somehow possible to add custom commands here, or a string of commands? (like adding the same stuff you can do with "core commands" to the list)

My network runs since several years with no new change or issues. I used to use gizmo few months ago and the problems didn't occure.

Thanks to investigate this issue and not reject it easilly towards network.

Setting my hard drive to never spin down fixed my initial log in issue.

I am still having some trouble with songs beginning, then skipping to the next song in the list.  I'm not sure what the cause of this could be.  I'm thinking something to do with buffering/3g hiccup/network traffic but haven't been able to pinpoint it.

I am far less frustrated now that I can log in successfully on the first try though.

I really like Gizmo, but one thing that I find frustrating is not being able to control the volume of my receiver when bitstreaming through HDMI to my reciever.  This is such a basic item that it should be addressed.  It would be great if an option existed to have Gizmo forward volume command controls to Girder or to my USB UIRT.

Have you tried setting the volume to internal volume in MC?

Tried this.  No luck.  Gizmo's volume control needs to be looked at to make it truly functional for HTPCs.  For now, I am not bitstreaming, which is not ideal.  Many people who use Gizmo as a remote to select and watch a movie, will want to be able to pass events onto Girder or Eventghost to control the volume on their receiver directly.

Another issue that I have with Gizmo is when I switch to Theater View control after selecting a movie to watch using my phone's screen.  Two issues:

1) The message that comes up on the screen every time I switch to this interface explaining the interface and
2) The WMC logo that takes you to the home screen for Theater View, rather than the JRiver Logo that allows for the control of the playback of the movie.  It would be better if the program recognized that a movie was playing and didn't show the WMC logo after starting a movie from the phones screen.

I really do like Gizmo and it has lots of potential, but it still requires some improvements.

I love gizmo2. It makes my little htc wildfire feel like a king in the house!

I have one problem and a suggestion though, regarding theater view remote.

The problem i experience is, that the remote function acts way too slow between tapping, vibrating and actually doing anything on the screen. I don't know if anyone else has that problem or it's just me, but it's actually a pain navigating through the theater view with gizmo.

Apart from that, my one and only suggestion would be to make gizmo2 theater remote, a full fledged remote, with play/stop/pause/next/previous etc buttons and without the need to start theaterview "by force". There are other solutions out there that already do that like Unified Remote (http://www.unifiedremote.com/remotes), but i love gizmo for all the nice things it can do, it's a powerhouse plain and simple.

Please take my little post into consideration :)

Gizmo works great at streaming music
But would really like to stream video. When I try at the moment the screen just goes white and there is no response.
I can stream video from J River to android using skifta and moboplayer. However this is not without problems as it has trouble with directories with a large amount of files

If I stream using skfita and MC just as a dlna server it is great. No biggie. I was just wondering if there are any settings I should be looking at. Currently I am waying up whether or not to upgrade from MC15 to MC16 as my MC16 trial runs out in a few days. Currently it has a few nice new features but maybe not enough to upgrade.

Here's a scenario:

I'm watching a movie and using the theatre view remote control mode of Gizmo. In display view, I use the arrows to scroll through subtitle options and what not. Then I get a call, write an SMS or do something else with my phone. Then I switch to Gizmo again. Herein lies the problem: The enter button is now gone! To make it work, I have to press the green button in the middle one time first before it changes to the enter button, AND THIS STOPS THE MOVIE AND ENTERS THEATRE VIEW! What's up with that? Can't there always be an enter button in the middle and another button for changing views? There's more than enought space for that, even on my tiny Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini with 320x240 resolution!

Seriously, this is a bug that needs fixing!

In some cases I have to use MC17 where there is no internet connection or poor connection, such as Audio Shows in hotels (CES ....), Gizmo didn't work. I use Virtual Router to connect Gizmo. Any advise?
I do audio shows in many places and countries, so data roaming will be very expensive.
It works over Internet or on a LAN.  If it isn't, it's probably a router / firewall problem.

I can play audio just fine with gizmo - but when I try and play any video file ( mov, avi, mkv, wmv ) all i get is a white screen.  I have tried this on 3 different devices, Samsung fascinate,  Motorola atrix, and kindle fire; all the devices are rooted.

I am running media center 16.0.181 - I downloaded gizmo from this link http://www.jriver.com/install_gizmo.html. I reinstalled gizmo yesterday to make sure i had the newest/greatest version.

I went into media center and played with the video conversion options- I went trough and choose different ones from the list - right now it is set to mp4 low.

On my devices i tried downloading apps to see if that was the issue: dolphin browser, flash player, opera, swf player, vlc direct. I turned on options in my web browsers to be able to play files that are flash or embed in sites.

Try the conversion settings in MC, under Media Network.

I just installed Gizmo ver 17.0.50 in my honeycomb 3.1 Google TV and it stops right before starting the next song after loading it and I have to hit resume to get it going after every song.

I see this had been reported before in prior versions.  what should I do?

Any how, I see there is a section in adroid dev which states which rights have to be specified so an app may be installed on Google TV from market. maybe that could help??

You might try installing other music players.  Gizmo uses the default music player.

You mean it does play in itself but uses the playing qualities of other players???

Well, the stock player " Logitech media player" sees the files but will not play them thats why I installed Gizmo.

I'll try another player.

Do i have to have my smartphone connected to wifi rather than the mobile networks internet service in order to use gizmo?

Its probly best that way unless i want to run up a silly mobile phone bill but i just tried to test gizmo with no joy, i assume its because i do need a wireless connection to the phone?

And is this* version always the latest version of gizmo as my marketplace function is broken, i only just found this link & am very grateful for it, without it i wouldnt be able to use gizmo at all! :)

No, you can connect using your mobile connection, or any internet connection, but you have to make sure that your firewall will allow that incoming request to be routed to the proper port so that MC gets the request.  I think the default is 52000, and in the setup dialog of MC, there is a way to test the connection, and it will report if you are unable to connect from an exterior connection.

It took me a while to realize I had to save every change in the router software, THEN test the connection before I got mine working.

Ok, i'll have a play with it when i get home, a more detailed explanation would help me get there faster i think though, i'd really appreciate it

I can't really change any settings on my phones end in gizmo, it just asks for the access key, so it must be settings i alter in MC/PC right?

The router itself is in a house separate from my room, so hopefully not too much tweaking at that end of things...

sorry, I'm at work so can't give very specific examples/advice, but I'll do my best to help anyway :)

You don't need to do anythign with your phone or on the device you want to use to connect WITH.

All settings need to be changed on the machine running the library server, and the router and firewall.  If you don't have access, you're not going to be able to do this, sorry.

My router allows me to make changes by connecting from any machine on the network, so assuming you can also do this, you're still in business.  I connect by typing 192.168.1.254 into the address bar of my browser.  the IP address of your router is likely similar, but not the same.

Assuming you can gain access, this link does a better job of explaining how this works, and what changes you need to make.

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Network_Access

Respond back with specific questions if you get stuck and someone will try to help.

Good luck, it's worth the effort!!

Cool, i have my i.p address now but when i type it into my browser & try to login with the username/pwd my mum gave me it doesn't log in on the site, to be honest i don't want to use my mobile networks internet service for this anyway, i'll end up with a huge bill, i just wanted to test it as it seems such a bloody cool way of controlling your music!

Early next week im getting a dlink device that lets me take my ethernet cable & create a wireless point in my room which i can then use for my laptop or phone, and it also gives a straight through ethernet which i can run into my PC, im assuming i wont have to do all this router config stuff when it comes as it won't be an external network trying to gain access, if its all under the same network/ip address im hoping i can just copy the access key across from MC into my smartphone/MC on laptop?

Thanks ;)

If an Access Key won't work when you enter it in Gizmo, either there is a typo or the network path isn't open.  Firewall or router.  Port 52199 needs to be open.

Cool, after reading the networking page i came to the same conclusion, unfortunately i can't seem to log into my routers page with the username/password i have so can't change any settings, i have the ip address but when i put it in my browser i can't get access into the page to change any settings, its asks for a username/password, the only one's i have are definitely for the router but doesnt let me in. I seem to remember having access to this page without a username/password though

I already set my firewall to allow connections on both public & home networks as it popped up & asked me when i installed media centre last night when i selected 'use media library to share this network' (my friend installed windows 7 64bit last night so had to reinstalll MC)

Guess ill just have to wait until i have wireless on my home network & it should work straight away hopefully

It still could be the firewall.  Check its settings.

For the router password problem, check the manual.  It may still be set to the defaults.  Otherwise, you can reset the router, but you'll need to re-configure it.

Router changes aren't normally required for access between two PC's on the same LAN.

There is a "Network Access (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Network_Access)" topic on our wiki.

Checked firewall settings & access is 'open' on both 'public/private' and the rest of the settings are 'any' such as local port/allowed users etc... its all open it seems

I think id have to do router changes as im using my mobile networks internet connection, not the same network as my PC, but i will have my wireless connection early next week so all good anyway, i've spent the last 28 years without it so 3 more days won't hurt ;)

Make sure you're using the internal IP, and not your external IP.  it will probably be similar to the one I posted earlier.

Many come default with no user name, and "password" as the password.  a google search will find the default login info for your specific model, including the default IP address.

You'll need to gain access to that to enact the port forwarding, or outside access will never work.

I tried with my internal IP in my browser (i was just using whatsmyip.com before) but when i use default username/password it tries to work but still fails to log in everytime, i've tried lots of combinations of them aswell

All good as my wireless access point will be here soon so my android's connections won't be on an outside/mobile phone network service anymore

Got my wireless network all setup now & its working beautifully, absolutely LOVE Gizmo to bits, excellent lil app and FREE!

Probly dont even need to use my laptop as a remote now, can do pretty much everything i need to from here, except make a new playlist... my next question may cover this....

One thing im wondering, when you hold down your finger on a song, you can do 3 things - play, add, or add (next to play)

What does 'add' do?

I thought it would be adding to an on the fly playlist but when i go into my playlists there's no extra playlist that i can see, not sure what this function does?

Thanks!

EDIT: adds to 'playing now' d'oh!

It could be that a static/fixed ip needs to be set, or if the ip address changes you need to reset the access key each time

down4jazz,
Please describe the setup.

Make sure wireless is on if your connection is local.

If it is not local, you're using the cell phone's data connection.  Check the wiki topic called "Network Access (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Network_Access)".

On the server, under Media Network, there is a test.  Try it.

Firewall needs to be open on 52199.

If you can access the server in any way via the client, there is no need to do anything with your router. You only need to configure that if you want access from Internet to your home network. You have probably got a firewall that is blocking Gizmo access.

Port 52199 needs to be open for incoming connections. TCP connections to be specific. You have to know what version of Windows you have on the server, and then you can google how to open up for custom incoming connections. You can find firewall under your Control panel.

That's a shame. Let's hope JRiver will add a offline option then. I know that online functionality makes it a bit easier to connetc to the server. Both on a LAN and over internet. But there should really be a way of doing it locally only too.

hey,
as far as i know:
library server create an access key and send it to jriver servers with two parameters: the ISP ip, and the local IP
for gizmo to connect: it goes and search the access key on jriver servers (so the use of the internet is a must) and gets the local ip and ISP ip

now gizmo search the local network for the server and connect to it when found
else it will try to connect through the internet which you must have been configured your router to allow traffic on the ports in use by jriver; and configure any other software that might block traffic (firewall, antivirus....)

so for now gizmo needs internet to connect to a local network server which I find a little bit abnormal

Exactly. If it works the way you describe, and I believe it does, it's no wonder people have problems. This might simplify things for normal users, but it introduces problems as well. There are several ways this could be done better imo.

You could have methods that stores the local IP/Host name after the first connection to the JRiver servers, and subsequent connections tries to connect the library server on the local network first, and then contacts JRiver servers. This require the server to be configured with either a static IP address, or you use the host name.

Second option could be to simply have a field in Gizmo, which you can fill manually if needed. This could give you the option to add IP or host name to use if no Internet connection is available.

For anyone who doesn't have a constant Internet connection:

Try updating Gizmo to 53 from the Market on your phone.  It was just uploaded.

You will need an Internet connection to connect the first time.  After that, if there is no Internet connection, Gizmo will use the last internal IP address that worked.

I've been having a lot of trouble lately with continuous play of a smart playlist.

Gizmo, whether connected via wifi or 3g network on my HTC Incredible will play 1 or 2 songs and then stop.  If I wake the phone Gizmo immediately says it is preparing the next song and it starts almost immediately.  The phone plays the song, goes to sleep during that time and then either plays 1 more song and stops or just stops after playing that one.  Repeating the process of waking the phone back up starts the next song.

Wifi and 3g connections are both good, I am at a loss as to how to troubleshoot further.  But the app just isnt' very usable for me in the current state.  There was a time when I was running MC16 and an earlier version of gizmo on this same device where it would play flawlessly for hours.  Not sure what has changed.

Android 2.3.4
MC17.0.82 and the latest Gizmo downloaded directly from jriver site.

I've played around with my MC17 settings and may have found the cause/solution.   My music is stored in WAV format.  I had the convert audio if necessary button checked.  I had this set because I have my media stored on one PC and use another instance of MC17 running on another HTPC to play the lossless files in my theater.  I think because my phone when connected can play WAV files that there was no conversion being done.  I changed it to always convert to high quality mp3 and so far have not had any issues.

I would like to still be able to send the lossless steams to my other PC though (and if possible continue to stream to my phone without problems), is there a way to do this or am I missing something?

It is strange though that it would play 1 or 2 files at a time and then quit when set up as indicated above.

So, I may have found a solution, but it is not a perfect one.

Gizmo always uses MP3 when you play 'Here' (on the phone).

When you use it to control other places, there's normally no conversion since Gizmo is just a remote.

It says preparing when I click on a file or playlist, shows the album art and then changes to the resume playback button.  I can hit that button and it says preparing again, then reverts back to resume playback.  Never starts playing the selected song.

Any ideas?

To add to my post above.  I have installed MC17 on a 2nd PC.  I made no changes to any of the networking settings from the default (I have tinkered a lot with the settings on my main server PC trying to resolve this issue).  The new instance will play an mp3 file with no issue, but presents the same problem when attempting to play a WAV file as my main pc.  It say preparing and then switches to the resume playback, pressing resume playback sends it back to preparing, but it stops after a few seconds and goes back to resume playback.

Also, it would be great if you could have the video fill the entire screen of the device and not have the home button, back button and recent apps button visible.

I have my lossless CD collection as the main library, on a different computer I have mp3s, music downloads, podcasts, etc. I would rather not have to combine them in to a single library.  It would be nice when using Gizmo to be able to access either library.

Hi All,

I have been reading through this thread and trying to find an exact match to my needs. I have tried the android remote controller on an HTC mobile but it doesnt quite do what I would like to do, even the menu type view doesnt quite hit the mark.

What I am looking for is a way to have an android tablet as a remote (wireless) controller but using it in Theatre view, i.e. the tablet shows exactly what the theatre view does on my server pc.

I have for some years been using a second vga display with touchscreen for parties and music listening sessions but I really want to go wirefree so that at parties/BBQ's etc my guests can simply pass around the MC Theatre view and add music via the tablet. I wonder if there is any application that would do this on an android or even an adroid app that will let me remote desktop.

Any ideas?

Johnno

You'll have to go for a Windows Pad for that purpose. Wait for one with Win8 would be my suggestion. But remember that MC will probably not be able to run on a ARM version. Just the x86 CPU's.

I installed GIZMO2 on my Motorola Xoom Wifi tablet and I am able to view and listen to my Media Center no problem. I would like to know if it is possible to use Gizmo as a remote to control music from my JRiver media server but have it streamed over to my Samsung home theatre blueray player.

At this time I am able to connect from the blueray home theatre unit and see the JRiver server but I cannot control what is being played from the Gizmo app on my Xoom Android tablet.

Thanks a bunch ,,,

In Gizmo, can you open the library on your MC Server?  If so, you can play to the Samsung BDP if you select it in Gizmo.

Not all devices are DLNA Renderers.  See the DLNA topic on our wiki for more information.

Yes I am able to enter the access code in Gizmo and the I get the following options:

Choose Where to Play
Here
Server

Choose A server to play from
Steve-PC (my access code)
New server....

More
Use device as a Theater View remote

I chose "Use device as a theater view remote" and looking at my computer I was able to navigate quite well with the Android remote and media Center.

My question is, can I get what I see and play on my desktop sent to the Samsung BDP and continue to control it via the remote ?

It appears that your Samsung player is not a renderer. We have two Sammy BDP's here and neither are renderers. Rendering support is not required to get DLNA certification. Some devices do, others don't. For example, the Sony PS3 doesn't but our Sony Bravia TV does. There is no consistency in this area by device manufacturers.

Hi there,

Sorry to ask this basic question but, would it be possible to use gizmo on a tablet (as a remote to control MC) via a W7 adhoc network ?

I have no router, just wireless network card on both computer/tablet.

Any chance we can get a configurable option for what is presented as the filename in Gizmo?  Something like Options->Theater View->Advanced->File caption.

I have a DNLA device that insists on showing files in alphabetical order, no matter how I have the view in WebGizmo configured.  What I want is to be able to configure MC to present S[Season]E[Episode] - [Name] for TV shows, so I can at least figure out which episode is next.

Are you configuring the correct area?  DLNA configuration is under Add or configure DLNA servers... > Customize views...

You can add your own categories, which presents details as you want.  If you create a category which includes:

   S[Season]E[Episode] - [Name]

When you drill down, you'll be presented with the list as you want.

Recently upgraded to MC17 and started using Gizmo on my Droid X2.  What a great app!!!  I can control my MC17 from anywhere in the house.  My HTPC streams music from an unRaid server to MC17. Very, very nice work!  I hope you can get a similar app for the iPhone and iPad in the near future.

Thank you for the links.  I was looking at using the Web Gizmo on those devices, but I hope those Apps work similar to the Android App on my Droid.

I'll let you know how they work for me.  This has all been worth the upgrade price.  Thank you for all your work JRiver!

Edit. I didn't realize those apps were for purchase.  I'll have to read up on them prior to spending the money.

I just finished playing with the WebGizmo Remote on an iPad and iPhone 4. This is within my LAN.  Relatively fast response, although not as quick as my Android. GUI could be a little more polished, but it works very well as is.  A few of the reviews on the linked software are not good, and once you part with your $10, it doesn't matter if you like the app or not. For the time being, the Web interface does what I need.  I hope in time JRiver will improve on the web interface.

Do you notice different behavior between the "Play All" selection and just trying to play a single track? They use somewhat different playback logic.

A new version is available with some fixes for Android 4.0 and 4.1.

Is Play Store taking some time to get this update? I still see...

Updated:
    April 6, 2012
Current Version:
    17.0.119
Requires Android:
    1.6 and up

But the release notes show:

58
Changed: Improved support for Android 4.0 / 4.1.
Fixed: Pausing playback (instead of stopping) would not let the device sleep.

Thanks,
Osho

It could be timing out, or there could be a certain artist name causing problems.

How large is the library, how fast is the server, and are there any strange characters in the artist column?

Thanks.

Collection is about 2tb and is hosted on a 4tb external hdd. Just checked download speed on a broadband checker - downloading at 11.47 mb/second - wireless from it will run skygo television which has to be more demanding than streaming audio. Subsequently have tried album selection as a way round it and found it goes to a blank screen, so it looks like it isn't just a problem with a strange artist name or character.

I'm having a problem with Gizmo on one of my Android devices. I'm currently running MC 19 and both my Android devices have the current version of Gizmo installed (updated via PlayStore today when it offered me another update.) but symptoms were the same with the previous version (installed a few days ago).

The problem occurs on my old Samsung Galaxy Tablet (GT-P1010) running Gingerbread; I can control MC just fine but when I select to play music locally on the tablet and choose something from the library I get the Album cover etc. displayed and the message 'Preparing' but playback never begins. This function, which I use a lot around the house worked fine until about a week ago on MC 17 and first occurred when I took a Gizmo update released at the end of August. The problem prompted me to upgrade to JRMC19 as I thought it might resolve the matter, but it hasn't.

On my Galaxy S2 smartphone (Android 4.1.2) local playback continues to work just fine.

On MC I have set the option to convert to high bitrate mp3 for playback on remote devices.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

On Gizmo, in the Menu->Options->Audio
can you try the 3 different audio qualities and see if there is a difference (you should play a mp3 file to test).
The high option will not convert a mp3 that already exists in that format in your library.
This is a way to see if conversion is preventing your setup from working.

Thanks Bob.
I have no mp3 files in my library, everything is FLAC.
Changing the different audio qualities on the tablet made no difference, I still got the 'Preparing' message.
I also tried the different mp3 qualities under the conversion options in MC but again no difference.
I have conversion on MC set to 'convert when necessary'; it just occurred to me that my Galaxy S2 phone is able to play FLAC files so I assume conversion is not happening.

Ray
Ray,
Gizmo converts in any case since the base level spec for android is only consistent on supporting MP3.

The 'convert when necessary' settings are only for DLNA and MC connected to MC via library server.
The only time Gizmo will not convert is when the source format is MP3 and the setting in Gizmo is high (since you can't increase the quality of a mp3 by reconverting it). I was just checking to see if conversion was the problem. You might try just converting a file in your library to MP3 to see if conversion works at all.

I was thinking along the same lines; I've converted some albums to mp3 and will transfer them to my MC library this evening and give it a whirl.

While I'm typing, I have to say that MC 19 seems to be a better implementation of DLNA than 17; I use DLNA to route music to my home cinema amp and previously I would experience some lost connections but now it seems solid and I've not lost a single connection.

Hi Jim

Is this option built in to JRMC19 - so that one server can control many clients as zones?

Quote
2.  Play on [Device] -- this plays to any zone or DLNA Renderer, including a copy of MC (if DLNA is enabled under Media Network).

thanks

Gizmo isn't a DLNA Renderer, so you can't play to it from another device.  You can play to Gizmo from any copy of MC that has Media Network turned on.

So I'm starting to use gizmo more and more to control Theater View (I'd still prefer a proper second screen experience but that's for another thread), however when I get to the "Watching" part, I then need to revert to my remote or keyboard to Pause, Stop, Play etc. Are there any plans to integrate these functions into Theater View Remote in Gizmo?

Sorry for the delay in following up on this - stuff has a habit of happening! Anyway, I added an mp3 file to the library and the behaviour is unchanged. Gizmo displays a 'Preparing' message and doesn't get any further.  Just as a reminder, this happens on my Samsung Galaxy Tablet (GT-P1010) running Gingerbread. On my  Galaxy S2 smartphone (Android 4.1.2) local playback continues to work just fine.

Those commands are already integrated into Theater View Remote in Gizmo.  Tap once to pause, tap again to Play.  If you want more commands, tap at the top (it should say "tap for commands") or on my phone I can also hit the Menu/Settings button.  An additional Commands menu will come up with Play/Pause, Previous, Next, Volume, etc.

Curious! I've invested in a WesternDigital My Net 750 router with the aim of getting my DLNA equipped home cinema amp (Denon 1912) to stay visible and connected to MC; no joy on that front so far but suddenly I'm able to play music via Gizmo on my Gingerbread Galaxy tablet again.

Just some thoughts. Edit the references to the old app in the new app. I don't remember off hand exactly the terminology as a remote for theater view but it states information about the old remote considering there is no green button. also scrolling through items needs to have a way to move more rapid. There should also be a STOP feature directly on the remote screen. Not under the menu side of things. I don't know about you but on my DirecTV remote I don't pull up a menu to stop what I'm watching from the DVR. The app should also actually exit when you tell it to. On Android we are forced to hit the back button to close out the app yet it doesn't actually close out. There is an exit remote mode but then your stuck with no way to actually close Gizmo.

This newer version is a whole lot more stable but it doesn't work the same as the old remote. It takes forever and a day to scroll through movies where its a fluid fast flowing if the key is held down on your keyboard. The remote is a dinosaur and a snail mixed in one. It always starts on the A and takes forever to get to the other end of the alphabet if you have a large collection. Oh and also you shouldn't have to hold the up button if you want to go to the bottom of a list. It should be up once to get to the above menu which has watch, back, etc. Then once more to get to the bottom of a list. Not Hold the up location on the remote to get it to switch to the bottom.

It just needs a rework and performance increase ability along with an actual selection to exit and close the app.

Just my two cents from my experiences with it. It needs to be more of an actual remote and hold those features on the screen and not center itself around a circle. No one uses a remote with a circle why should this one be shrunk down into a non user friendly feature stripped remote? It's not necessary.

Oh yea and FF and RW are a joke just to say it bluntly.

I just ran a test; connected my Android tablet PC to my A/V receiver using an HDMI cable. I was able to display / watch video on the TV and listen to audio from the AVR. All audio was 2 channel regardless of the source. I read in this thread that all audio is converted to mp3. If it wasn't converted, would multi-channel audio be passed thru the HDMI cable to be processed by my AVR? If so, could Gizmo be updated to allow this?

Update: 13/11/2013
Well, my tablet probably doesn't support HD audio pass-thru but there are Android mini PCs that do. Sounds like a sweet solution for a compact media player (Android mini PC & Gizmo) to play JRiver MC content.
Title: Gizmo: Any effect on bit rate?
Post by: jphilpit on November 24, 2013, 12:54:49 pm
I am using Gizmo on my Sony Android tablet after downloading it this morning. I quickly got it to work controlling the connection from MC19 as a DLNA server to my Denon AV receiver as a DLNA renderer. But I have a question. In the Gizmo options, there are 3 choices for audio quality: 64, 128, and 320 kbps. All my files in the MC19 library are FLAC, and my Denon box supports FLAC up to 16 bit and 44.1 kHz (i.e., CD quality). Do those 3 audio quality options mentioned above apply when I'm just using the tablet as a controller? Or are the only in effect when streaming to the Android tablet itself? I don't want anything to compromise the benefits of using uncompressed audio.

P.S. I've bought, but not yet received, a $3500 DLNA Renderer that supports DLNA up to 24-bit and 192 kHz. If there's anything that will diminish that bit rate and bit depth I have to avoid it, or else that $3500 was wasted.

Hello, Patrick,
I bought the Naim ND5 XS.

I see the Naim image as your avatar. Do you work for/with them, or are you just a super-fan? I was introduced to the product line only a few days ago when the audio salesman here in NYC recommended the company. I'm really looking forward to receiving the box in about 2 weeks.

Very nice!  Enjoy!  I am just an enthusiast/owner.  Not a Naim employee.

Did you go to Accent up in Mt. Kisco?  If not, meet the owners at some point.

I have a galaxy note pro 12.2 and gizmo does not work.

It works with tab 8.4, my galaxy s3. .. but not my tablet.

Why?

I know the chipsets on the 12.2 are not the same as the 8.4.

Hello. Are there any plans to update the interface a little? I see a ton of features are added and streaming/movie type bugs are fixed, but I'm "just" using this as a remote control for my music system. Biggest wishes: allow me to shrink font size in song listings for albums (okay on tablet, way too big on Nexus 5), AND allow me to long-hold the volume up/down buttons to go forward/back thru songs like other Android music apps allow.  Thanks!

Wanted to thrown in my issue here too with regard to some folks' recent problems with Gizmo and Samsung devices: can't get Gizmo to work on my Galaxy S3 any longer.  I don't know if it was after the 4.4.2 (?) update this summer, or after I rooted the phone after that OS update, but I get hangs when I try to play music (just says "Preparing" and then nothing happens for hours--literally: I let it go for awhile once).  It connects to MC fine, and as I intimated above, it used to work perfectly both at home on the WiFi and out of the house on 3/4G.  Now it hangs wherever I am.  I'm using the most recent version of MC19 (19.0.163), and I haven't changed any settings in MC from when it used to work.  It's not a huge deal since I usually play local files in my car or at the gym when I'm out, but still, I'd like it work like it used to because I do use it occasionally.  Also, for what it's worth, I stream constantly with a client MC on a laptop and with a WD TV Live and have no issues with these.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

I cannot get Gizmo to work on my Samsung Tab S. I have manually entered the ip addresses. When I click on one it sends me back to the screen to enter  the 6 character code. I can't do anything to attach to the server.

Hi everybody,

I am not sure, if this is the right place for my question.
If not, please move it to the correct board.

First of all let me thank you for inventing GIZMO.
It works great for controlling my music and videos in the living room.
It also works great for streaming music to other rooms on PCs but there is a problem playing videos on my SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 10.1 (2014)

I can play Music on the SAMSUNG but if I start video, it says "preparing", then starts the video, plays 1-2 seconds und then returns to the list of videos.
On the serverside I tried some vodeo-converting modes, but they didn't work either.

Is this a known issue?
Are there any hints to solve the problem?

Thank you all in advance.

BTW. Video works fine on my phone HUAWEI ASCEND P6, but the screen is so small ;-)

Best regards
Peter

Hallo Peter,

gizmo 2 works great for streaming video to a newer tablet....
