Title: Will Id do the following
Post by: thane108 on July 13, 2017, 01:42:43 pm
I'm about to pull the trigger and order Id but I just need confirmation that it will work as follows:

JRiver is installed on my desktop in my office.  My photos and music are on the desktop.

I would install Id in the Living Room (wired Ethernet)
1) with optical out to my receiver for playing music with the TV off
2) with HDMI out to my receiver for playing music while looking at photos

I would be able to control the Id:
1) from my desktop via JRiver
2) from tablet
3) from media center remote control attached to Id ?

Is this correct?

Thanks!

There is no optical out on the Id.  Perhaps you could use USB out.

Otherwise correct.

The NUC Id does have an optical port, but it requires a mini-TOSLINK, so you may need an adapter if your cable has the standard square TOSLINK. Other than that, Media Center remote controls are not functional with the Id.

The rest should work fine. There are multiple ways to control the Id from another computer or tablet.

Could you please clarify - "The NUC Id does have an optical port" - I though Jim said it didn't in the prior post.

Jim - my receiver does have a USB input that allows playback from a USB storage device.

Question:  would I be able to use the JRiver interface to select multiple albums, shuffled playlists, etc.  using the usb interface - or would I be limited to the user interface built into the receiver - which is pathetic.  I have a Yamaha RV-73.

Brad's answer is better.  The NUC we use now is different.

That probably won't work.  You could use HDMI.

You can use JRemote or Gizmo or even MC on another machine to control it.

Brad - can you tell me which optical cable I need?

Thanks

What you probably need is a TOSLINK to mini-TOSLINK optical cable. I say probably because I'm guessing the optical port on your receiver is a standard square TOSLINK. The mini-TOSLINK looks more like a 3.5mm jack. If you already have a standard optical cable, you can just get a TOSLINK female to mini-TOSLINK male adapter. Either option is only about $5.

Thanks - ordered both the Id and the cable.

Fun time next week when UPS makes the deliveries!

Just a quick note to say "thanks" - Id is working well for me.

Very easy to stream music to my receiver from either my laptop or desktop.  And was very easy to install.

I did purchase the optical out cable so I can turn off television and still stream music to the receiver.  That also works well.

The advice and guidance is much appreciated.
