Title: JRiver: The Name
Post by: DrKNo on January 13, 2020, 08:10:04 am
Something light for the new year: I've been wondering - How did the name JRiver come to be?

From Jim:

It was originally James River Group.  In around 1990, we changed it to JRiver to distinguish it from James River Corp, a very large paper company.  Shortly after that, they merged with Fort Howard and changed their name to Fort James.

A year or two ago, we changed it to JRiver, to make it work better with search engines.

I wrote this about the company in 2011, when it turned 30.

I was once told that the origin of the name is quite simple. As on the link above, it started out as "James River", James is Jim, of course, and River is the Mississippi thats not too far from the old office location in central Minneapolis.

Yeah, there's more info in the thread that Jim's comment was quoted from:

Also: 40 Years anniversary is next year! Incredible achievement.
