Title: Drag and drop and scroll racing in Playing Now
Post by: Tanguero on December 11, 2005, 07:22:44 am
Two situations that keep giving me trouble, especially when DJ-ing:

a) I have a split view with Playing Now in the bottom pane and Media Library or a playlist in the top pane. I want to add one or more tracks to Playning Now, but not at the end.

b) I want to move tracks within Playing Now.

In both cases, Drag and Drop feels like the most natural way to do it, but if the cursor passes the fourth track from the bottom - or from the top  -  the pane starts scrolling. The scrolling is fast, which often gets the target position in the other end of the pane. I move the cursor there, and the scrolling goes the other way. This is not very practical.  And it forces me to make the Playing Now pane larger than it would otherwise need to be, leaving less space for the "source" pane I take the tracks from.

MC behaves the same way for drag-and drop to playlists.

I can see two things that could help me out of this:

1) Make the scrolling slower - A configurable scrolling speed would probably be the best solution. It that extra parameter is bad from a complexity and/or performance perspective - Just make this auto-scrolling slow. If you want to move to another part of the list, the ruler slides are probably a better tool than a scrolling so fast that most people above 25 don't have the time to see where they are in the list.

2) Make the "scroller trigger zones smaller - maybe configurable?

Note 1: The "four tracks" zones I mention are of course going down to one,  two or three tracks when the pane gets really small so there is a small "drop zone" even with just three tracks visible.

Note 2: I am aware that I can use right click Copy and Paste or Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v, but I still would appreciate a better drag and drop feature.

I've had this same problem. It's nearly impossible to drop a song in a specific spot in a playlist before the list starts scrolling.

Shouldn't the behaviour be more like in the tree, ie: holding  the cursor down at the edge of the window triggers the scrolling, moving away from the edge causes it to stop.

How about a 2 sec delay before the scrolling starts?

I have been *SCREAMING* about this ever since v11 came of age.

i tend to use drag n drop in the tree a lot and this very  problem makes things impossible to work with.

v10 .....drag n drop worked perfectly.

It would be better if you had the 2 choises; split vertical or horizontal.
Like in windows

This is an old discussion. It wasn't priority during the 11.0 release period.
Maybe it is good time to bring it up again, since we are in the 11.1 Beta.

I would like to add the request for a search per view.
Did you now that both panes are filtered when you use search.
It is not possible to drag and drop between filtered views. With a search per view this would be solved!!!

I would like to ask everyone (who agrees with me on this feature) to post a reply!!!

We'll slow it down in tonights build.

All the video game pros will be complaining tomorrow that it's too slow ;)

Thank you Matt, it will be interesting to try!

Regarding Dutch Peter's search per view: If that includes a search field in each view, I'd say it takes to much space. But if the filtering could be to operate only on the active view, I would like that. Even better if MC showed more clearly than today which is the active view.

Yes! Different way of reaching the same goal.
It is by the way a great idea to clearly indicate which view is the active one!!

I just tried Drag and Drop in 11.1.79 and it seems that you have both made the "scroll trigger zones" smaller and slowed down the scrolling a bit.  I still get the feeling of a fast scrolling, but I am more successful in getting to the right line in the list, so you seem to have found a good balance. This makes it much easier for me. Thank you!

However, After I have dropped the tracks in the list, the list makes a jump scroll, and the files I just dropped  are below the visible part of the list. They should be visible where I dropped them; it would be nice if you could have it fixed in the next build.

Just make it like it was in mc 10. It was neither too fast or too slow.

Also note in MC 10, when you scrolled up/down there would be a guide following (the directory would be highlighted with  a red line in case of thunderbird), this indicated the final destination.

The combination of this guide and the intuitive scroll made drag n drop so good with mc 10.
