Title: How to Upgrade to MC16 ($26.98)
Post by: JimH on February 25, 2011, 03:58:55 pm
The latest version of JRiver Media Center, MC 16.0, is available for $26.98 if you have previously purchased Media Jukebox 8.0 or any version of JRiver Media Center.  Find out more here:

Instructions (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC16)      Features (http://www.jriver.com/v16.html)

MC16 can co-exist alongside any version of MC back to 11.1 without uninstalling the old version.

If you purchased MC15 after January 1, 2011, you already have an MC16 license.  You can just install MC16 and visit the Restore Page (http://www.jriver.com/purchase.html).

Thanks for thinking about a purchase.

Today is my last day with Internet access before I go on a trip. Therefore my last chance to upgrade for $ 16.98.

I've followed the instructions precisely, but unfortunately the 'buy' link from MC16 is dead.

I come from the latest MC15, fully registered.

I haver removed MC15 and MC16 from my computer, and have first reinstalled MC15, and re-registered it using a newly obtained .mjr file. After that I installed MC16 beta .39 and followed the buy button... to a dead link.

I have tried various browsers: IE8, IE9RC and Chrome.

I have also tried the link from the popup after first start of MC16, giving me the option to upgrade. Also that link did not work.

Bye bye ten dollars...

Having same problem - link does not appear to work, and worried that upgrade offer will run out before we can access it.

Please consider extending offer and advise when it is fixed.

Thanks

I just upgraded to MC15 on 12/17/2010.....didn't realize there was MC16 coming out in early 2011.

Do I need to upgrade again already? Or is there any provision for recent upgrades?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

The cutoff date was January 1, 2011.  An upgrade is currently $16.98, $10 off the regular upgrade price.

Thanks for your purchase.

Help needed with install on second computer------
I upgraded from version 12 or 13 to 16 without any problems and now want to upgrade my HTPC computer on the same network.  I installed version 16 and when I try to register with my install key it is not recognized.  I thought I could install on both my computers.  Is correct and if so, any suggestions would be appreciated.  I am using Windows 7 Pro x64.    Media center from J rivers is so much better than the Microsoft Media Center!!!

Thanks

The Purchase link above should answer most questions.

You could start there and have your licenses e-mailed to you.

MC16 will only run with an MC16 license.  If you still have problems, try a copy and paste of your Registration Code on the Restore Page.

An Install Key is only good for 14 days.  After that, you need to use a restore.

Is the upgrade license good for the final release or are these just essentially Beta keys?

If you buy any license, it's good for any minor build of the same version.

MC16.0.xxx to MC16.x.xxx is free.

The only time we ask for an upgrade fee is when the major version changes.

MC.xx.xxx to MC16 is currently $16.98.  On Monday, it will increase.

Thanks for asking.

"MC16.0.xxx to MC16.x.xxx is free" implies than any/all version of MC16 will be valid.

Maybe you don't have MC16 installed?

See the Upgrade link on our wiki for details.

Don't post your license here.

Media Center is installed.  Version 15 is licensed.  Try the link that I received in the email for
the upgrade offer.  Go to that page, fill in all the info (name address, email, credit card details) and
goes to the next screen to authorize purchase.  Click on that and it takes me back to
the purchase screen like something is not correct.  Checked everything and it seems to be correct.
Tried on multiple PC's and still not luck.  Seeing that there were issues previously, I thought the system
may be down again.

I haven't been able to get the upgrade to work. I have 15 installed and licensed. I installed 16 and the buy page always shows full price (not the upgrade price). I tried restoring my 15 license in 16 as suggested on the Wiki and it said it was invalid. All it did was blow away my license on 15 (which I was able to restore in 15 from the MJR file). I don't have UAC enabled. No change to the buy page.... still shows full price.

Hello,

I want to share my feeling about this upgrade. I am personally part of the software industry since 10 years and I am working in one of the top 10 software vendors in the world.

Jim you propose a non-free upgrade every 15 months by asking to pay half the price of the first licence fee. This is huge. To justify this kind of amount, you need to bring real new things in the software. But this is not the case with this version, no new breakthrough features or new architecture (as an example play doctor is low level feature and buggy)
More than that you ask your clients to pay for something that is not finished (still in beta). I tried the MC 16 and it put the mess in my database.

Saying that I wont pay the upgrade and I therefore I will consider alternative solutions because I need a software that is still supported (as a matter of fact, you ended the support of MC 15).

Sorry you feel that way.   A few comments ...

A lot has changed in MC16.  You might read some of the MC16 release thread notes to see what else is new.  Alex B keeps a log.  You'll find a link in his signature.

MC15 is still supported.

Support for a DLNA Server is improved.  The library load of DLNA is normally not very fast, so that in MC15 a large library will make the client seem slow.  Now it loads in the background so you can begin using the program.

Performance speed is generally faster as well.

Early on, an update was $16.98, about 35% of new price, not 50%.

But MC15 is a great program and should last you several more years.  We've still got some people using MC9 and MC10.

The Glass half full way of looking at this might be that for 15 months you're getting !FREE! upgrades if you buy early in the dev cycle!

Thinking of software from the top 10 vendors makes me think of people like Adobe where their products cost significantly more than $50 and if you're lucky you get one or two updates to fix major problems with the software.

So again with the glass half full way of looking at this software... It's a real bargain!  It's almost tempting to buy two just in case they change their minds tomorrow!  ;)

To JIM,

The only way to have special price is to commit on a beta software, this is not fair in my point of view.

You say that MC 15 is still supported, when do you expect to issue a new version ? the 174 has been issued 1.5 months ago. In regular period, you issue one each 2 weeks. For me this not anymore support.

What would be fair, from your point of view?

I think calling it a beta when it's obviously the same product in continuous development is silly. Instead of upgrades, there should be an annual subscription fee for the right to use the latest versions during that period. That subscription fee should not be discounted under any circumstances—because that, of course, would be unfair.

I guess that is why it is called special price. After that there has usually been lowered price for upgrade and full price for new customers.

Hiya,

Tried to do an upgrade from 14 to 16. First issue, the beta version worked for one day, then expired. But I knew I wanted it so I followed the upgrade process, paid $20, received my new license file, but when I launch MC16 says "your license file has expired. Do you want to restore license (via) registration code?" I had the license reissued by entering the registration code that came both in my email and at time of purchase -- same issue.

What am I missing?

The only way to have special price is to commit on a beta software, this is not fair in my point of view.

Then don't buy it or even acknowledge it. You have the ability to make choices you know :)

You say that MC 15 is still supported, when do you expect to issue a new version ? the 174 has been issued 1.5 months ago. In regular period, you issue one each 2 weeks. For me this not anymore support.

As I understand the support model over at JR...they continue to "support" the most recent "mature" version while the actual dev resources and coding goes into the newest version.

"Support" meaning - if something catastrophic were to occur after some 50 versions in v15 - the dev team would be there for me to check it out. That does NOT guarantee a new version of the software would be issued.

And then for a super modest upgrade fee - we get access to all the new stuff that is going right into v16 and it's new variants.

Seriously tho - if you have already bought in to the program - is $23.00 or $25 bucks going to kill ya? Look at what this program is capable of....if you cannot recognize the value and the unbelievable dev service we get - (practically a direct pipeline to the dev guys via these forums)...maybe it's time you changed to something else.

Do remember that this is a business. To me - These guys deserve every buck they get and I have no problem sending over some scratch for the next new round :)

My 2 cents...

VP

On 27th Feb I upgraded to mc16... the payment went through (with paypal) and I installed the new licence.

I reinstalled windows this week and when I try to restore my licence it says it is not valid with this version of media center.

It seems when I restore from my original registration key I get a mc15 licence (this no longer works on mc16) but I was not emailed a new reg key when I upgraded?

Can you help?

FWIW, an upgrade purchase ran just fine for me today.

My browser (Opera 11.01) insisted on saving the mjr file as an exe.  Once I renamed it to the expected mjr MC loaded it as expected.

Hello,
a week ago I bought the JRiver Media Center 15th Now I have to pay to upgrade to version 16?  ?

In version 16, if passed would only have been solved that occasionally happens to play music recording interruption. It is necessary to press pause, then play goes smoothly. This bug quite irritating. Reproduction is going through a USB cable to M2Tech Young DAC.

I commend JRiver Media Center, because it sounds better than Foobar2000. Tried the same setup, with WASAPI drivers on both programs.  :D

All MC15 buyers have received an MC16 license for several months now. The license is valid for MC15 and MC16.

From the change log:

Thanks for the hard work guys and for one of the best support I've ever seen for any product.

Though I'll probably pay for the upgrade to MC16, I do wish that you guys would send out an email notification to existing customers when you're releasing a new version so people who don't read the forum on a regular basis know that a new version is out and can also get the best discount on it.  Unless I'm running into a problem, I prefer to spend my time using the software rather than reading the forum.

We did that back in March, but it sometimes gets treated as SPAM.

Maybe a Google Alert (http://www.google.com/alerts?hl=en&gl=us) for [site:http://yabb.jriver.com/ "upgrade to MC16"] would have done the trick. :-\

That's odd - I received the message you sent me just a few minutes ago, but never received anything from you guys announcing the new version back in March (and it's been the same for previous new versions - I've always had to stumble across them on the forum and have rarely been lucky enough to check at the right time to get the best upgrade price).  Since I have my own software that I sell (not as my main source of income, but enough to generate some play money), I'm very careful about checking the contents of my spam folder before I delete those messages just in case something important gets flagged incorrectly.

That would probably work, but if they're sending out notifications to people, it shouldn't be needed.  It would make more sense to figure out why those notifications aren't reaching everyone.

You're not alone in believing that, but that doesn't make it so. There are things they can try to figure out, and they do try. But, in the end, there's no way they can predict or control what your ISP or your mail client is going to do with a broadcast message.

A more effective solution would be a notification system built into the program. But then the complaint would be, "I started MC for the first time in 3 months—and was informed I missed a bargain!" Maybe a JRiver Upgrade Notifier running as a service...

I realize that nothing is going to be 100% reliable.  In my case, I have NEVER received a new version notification notice from JRiver for any version of the software and rarely have issues receiving emails in general (or at least I haven't run into any cases where someone has complained about me not responding to a message that I never received, though they might eventually just assume I'm ignoring them...).  I've always received my license key emails from JRiver without issue.  Until tonight, I never realized that they sent out emails letting their users know a new version is available - without that knowledge, I never had any reason to believe I wasn't receiving other emails from them.  I'm getting the impression that you're more interested in inserting some sarcasm into the conversation than in helping to find an actual solution to the problem.  My hope in bringing this up is that they can attempt to investigate what's going on so the same thing won't happen when MC17 comes out.

At worst, my email provider (which is NOT my ISP - I use a separate service for my email and web hosting) or email client will flag a message as spam and put it into the spam folder.  As I stated earlier, I check the spam folder regularly in case something important ends up there by mistake.

If JRiver would like to work with me offline to attempt to figure out what's going on, they know how to contact me and I'd be happy to provide them any information they may need to attempt to figure out what's going on.

My sarcasm was directed at my own suggested solution—which I believe to be a sound one—to illustrate one can complain about anything if they put their mind to it. Perhaps you could review threads like Not receiving emails from JR (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=62471.0) and Upgrades (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=63555.msg424794#msg424794), and consider whether your case warrants another useless investigation. I'd prefer the resources went towards making the program better. One small but useful improvement would be a built-in notification system.

I agree that some sort of not-very-intrusive notification system (perhaps part of the new whiz-bang updater) would be helpful and would cut down on the "I didn't get the email" problems.

For what it's worth, I always get the emails.  However, I long-ago marked jriver.com as a "trusted source" in all of my different email providers.

How do I go about getting a refund. I was a long time MC user up until iPod support was dropped. I didn't realize, after returning to the fold, that MC still does not support iPods. I'd like get my $26.98 back.

Thanks,

Ben

The trial version offers 30 days to test.  We don't provide refunds.

MC supports older iPods and the problems with newer ones are well documented on the iPod board.
