I have my new HTPC & related hardware up and running now. I have set Media Center to upscale all audio to 7.1 (8 channels).
I have a sound system that is 16 channels: LCR tri-amped (9 channels); 2 sides, 2 back, 3 subs total = 16.
Using Audiolense software, I have a filter set constructed for ConvolverVST that is designed to input 7.1 (8 channels) and output the 16 channels I need.
The problem is when Media Center is set to upscale to 7.1 it does not properly manage the 16 channels coming out of ConvolverVST. I only get 8 channels of output. If I set Media Center to 16 channels, I can not select 7.1 upscaling.
Plea: Maybe this situation could be accommodated by the JRiver experts?
If needed:
I have seen comments about setting up a host for ConvolverVST that Media Center would output to. Then output from the ConvolverVST host to my USB 16 channel DAC. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I use plogue bidule as a vst plugin inside MC.
I don't think this would help you however, as you still need to set MC to 16 channels. You would need a VST plugin to do the 7.1 conversion within bidule.
I think the best bet would be is MC were to support 7.1 channel output with >= 7.1 channels selected

Yes that would probably work. I use that approach to apply minimum phase corrections to TMT5. But I am not using DSP crossovers. Nevertheless, I still think that you can have 8 channels in and 16 out with the standalone version.
What soundcard are you using?
For the external plogue bidule to work, you need to loopback the 8 channels.

Yes, I think that should do it for just about any 7.1 system configured with Audiolense.
My ConvolverVST plugin looks like this:

I assume the MC digital volume then does all 16 channels as the last item in the signal chain?

I'm interested to understand how VST/DX filters are chained in DSP. The documentation is not clear enough about this. Even in the new DSP view it's not clear to understand how VST/DX pins are assigned.
Several plugins are stereo only, is there any way to plug them on specific channels (L/R, SL/LR, etc)?
If not, is it something that could be implemented?
On Homecinema-fr (a french forum dedicated to HIFI and HT) we have some users using Ozone VST which is known as one of the best stereo filter.
I've not been able to use it in a multi-channel configuration,

I gained some experience using JRiver MC and Audiolense for the first time this weekend. What a great combination for the ultimate in playback, loudspeaker control, and digital room correction :)
I'm only listening to stereo (no Blu-ray) so far. I have a 22' wide sound stage so it will be great with stereo upmixed to 7.1 using JR Surround Sound. I really miss the center speaker in the mix.

Where, in the DSP chain, do you apply the convolution? I'm surprised that you're doing that only on the stereo signal, especially in the 7.1 scenario.

Coming in 17.0.57 and newer:
Changed: JRSS is now supported when doing 12, 16, 24, and 32 channel output (JRSS will populate 7.1 and the other channels will be silent).
Feedback and testing appreciated.

The convolution should occur before any reduction in volume like Replay Gain or Digital Volume adjustments for max resolution. The ConvolverVST plugin is set to take in up to 7.1 (8 channels) in the standard order I listed earlier. It then performs the filtering that was developed in Audiolense for my specific system and room. I my case ConvolverVST does some active crossover duty, digital speaker/room correction, and outputs 16 channels of audio to my outboard USB DAC which is connected straight into switching power amps from Class D Audio.

JRSS works great up mixing to 7.1 with 16 channels selected. ConvolverVST is routing 8 into 16 channels.
I'll test more this week.
