I use MC on laptop with several Zones and different monitor configurations. I always have a horizontal two split view enabled. Most of the time the above one is locked to the playing now.
After some time I always lose one view. It's impossible to bring back the second split. If I go to "View -> Split View" there still is a check mark near Show 2 Views. When I change to back to 1 View the right side (where the views normally are shown) there is only black. Nothing to see. I have to click any Item to return to a normal view. From this point MC behaves normal.
I'm not able to reproduce this, but it happens quiet often. I even cannot guess the reason because most time when I notice it, it happened at the beginning of a ballroom lesson where I have no time to investigate. Any idea or anyone else seeing this from time to time?
-
What happens if you close and restart the program?
I loose my second view about every second time the program is restarted for an upgrade for a new build, for example. If this happens a close and restart of the program will show the two views for me again.
-
Next time the bug apears I'll give it a try!

Just lost my second view. And yes: restarting the program brings back both views.
-
This is what it looks like when the 2nd view disappears and I chang to 1 view. Nothing to see, just black... I've tabs enabled, but they're gone to in this "view".

When this happens do not switch the number of views as that will force you to reconfigure the views to get them back to the original state. For the time being just restart MC when this happens and, as you have discovered, your split view appears again.
I am convinced that this is a bug and I have reported it three times already. I am sure it will be fixed soon now that it seems that someone else is also afflicted by it.
-
Is there anything that triggers the problem?
-
Not that I can think of, apart from closing and restarting MC several times. I reported the issue originally with v. 15 and I remember that I had seen the issue for some time by then and not really understood what was going on. Then I found out that the cure was to close and restart MC and I did that one more time and could repeatedly reproduce the issue by closing and restarting MC again; every other time the split view disappeared. I brought the issue up again at v. 16, and at the end of v. 16 development I did not see the issue for a long time and thought that it had been fixed. Then the issue was back again a bit into the development of v. 17. Below are links to the reports I have made (a couple of links might be to the closed beta board and not accessible for everyone).

I was now able to make the split view disappear the third time I closed and restarted MC. Once the issue appeared the split view was missing every other time I closed and restarted MC; I tried it 4 times with the same result.
-
Same for me. Sometimes it happens, most time it just works. I cannot see any special trigger. Sorry...
-
I have two horizontal views, with a mess o'tabs in each, and I have never seen this. My bottom split, with 8 tabs, is locked. My top split, with playing now and about 5 tabs, is unlocked.
-
Ähm, I didn't notice this before but right now I'm able to reproduce this easily: Every second start the bug appears... Not sure if this was the case all the time and I didn't notice it (I don't restart MC often). I'll try, if restarting the PC will change this behavior. Right now it is:
Starting MC: Split view 2 views checked, everything works
Restarting MC: Split view 2 views checked, bug appears
Restarting MC: Split view 2 views checked, everything works
Restarting MC: Split view 2 views checked, bug appears

I had this happen to me yesterday.
What I can remember:
MC was split into 2 columns
View 1 locked
tree minimized
playing now open on left
audio panes and scheduler open on right.
I have tried to replicate the behavior and can not.
-
I have three different PCs with different versions of MC and the same bug. Apart from me nobody seems to have this problem. So I try to figure out what could cause this bug for me but I don't know where to start. I don't even see any connection between the three PC except that they are all running a library that was synced between them some time ago. Just changing the library doesn't have an effect.
I tried to test a fresh portable installation. The bug did not appear (all other installations with bug are normal installations).
I imported library and settings from my main (buggy) installation. The bug didn't appear.
Any idea what I could do to solve this problem (on all three PCs)?!
-
Second try.
I did a complete uninstall. Then reinstall. Bug not there. I added a new library using the files of my old library. Bug not there.
Finally I restored my settings using the library restore feature and the bug is back again :-\ Any ideas which setting could cause the bug...?!
-
You could try to play around with the settings Startup => Location and Mode. It made no difference for me when I tried it way back, but you might have more luck.
-
Was my first guess ;) Didn't change anything.
-
Is there anything that triggers the problem?
I finally found a trigger :)
Beside the above mentioned things, the bug only appears if view 1 is locked. Doesn't matter if 2 or 3 views, rows or columns, tabs or no tabs, or if a second view is locked in a 3 view. Locking view 2 (and/or view 3) works as expected.
The bug only appears if view 1 is locked.
If I get the time I'll again try to reproduce this on a clean install.

This sounds like progress! View 1 of my 2 views is also locked.
-
Do you still have this bug appearing every second time you start MC?
-
No, not every second time MC is started after an update of MC or a restart of the PC. But sometimes when I start MC one of the two views is gone until I restart MC again. Once the issue has occurred (i.e. only one view shown) MC switches between one and two views with every restart of MC at least until the PC is restarted (at least this is the behaviour on all occasions I have tried several consecutive restarts of MC once the issue has occured).
As an example, just now two views were shown but after I closed and restarted MC only one view was shown, and after that every second restart of MC showed only one view.
Sorry that I cannot provide more info. I have been puzzled by this issue for a long time.
-
I used to have this issue in previous versions 14 and 15? I could never find the cause. I either changed a setting or changed the way I did things (inadvertently) and the problem has not appeared for at least a couple of years.
-
May you perhaps try to lock view 1 in a multi view setup and see if the bug appears again?!
Thanks!
-
Nice detective work.
I've got it happening in the debugger now, so hopefully I can get to the bottom of it.
More as I know more.
-
Next build:
Fixed: Locked views could cause the view state to be lost between program startups.
The lock was getting in the way of setting startup views (which should ignore the lock, but wasn't).
-
I'm glad to hear that there are finally enough informations to (hopefully) fix this!
T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U for listening and fixing!
