Problem: Onkyo NR-609 receiver sees but cannot connect to DLNA server
MC Version: 17.147, 17.160
OS: Win7 SP1, up to date
AV: MS Security Essentials
Receiver firmware: current as of today (xxxx180)
Sequence of events:
* Version 16.181 installed. DLNA server working, Onkyo can connect
* Upgraded to 17.147
* Uninstalled 16
* Rebooted
* Start MC 17, Enable Generic DLNA
* Onkyo NR-609 receiver sees the Generic DLNA, but hangs at "Connecting..." (never see folders or lists). Requires receiver power off to unfreeze.
* Upgraded to MC 17.160, reboot
* Windows Firewall TURNED OFF; media streaming enabled
* Confirm DLNA servers running (total of 5 servers in the Summary, including DLNA Renderer, Subscription, and Server; ports 52100, 52199, 1900, 52102, 52101)
* Onkyo behaves similarly, hangs at "Connecting..."
* Enable/disable DLNAExtra, Flat/full URL, WMC compatible without affect
* Uninstall MC 17, reboot
* Reinstall MC 16. Onkyo connects normally.
* Installed MC 17.x on another computer. Onkyo cannot connect
* Onkyo connects fine to Windows Media on both computers
There has always been a significant level of dysfunction in MC 16 in the ability of MC to serve the Onkyo, such as the folder menu has to be specially configured to enter the various categories/folders, slow to switch between and load tracks, and much more. But with MC 17, there is simply no connection. The Onkyo does not offer any configuration.
Windows Media 12 streams perfectly and effortlessly every time. It is shame that MC is simply not useable in 17, and close to unusable in 16, in the current configuration.
Any ideas? This seems similar to a recent post using a different model of Onkyo.

I have the same problem with my NR609. I'm hoping that release 161 will fix it - see http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=72341.0 (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=72341.0)

PM'd you both.
-
I too find MC17 harder to config than WMP 12 with my 609.
Any assistance would be fab.

I am having the same issues with Onkyo TX-NR 509
I can connect and play via Window Media, but I cannot connect with MC 17.
Can you help please ?
BTW I have upgraded the Onkyo FW and I am running on the latest MV17
-
I do not experience problems with connecting my Onkyo TX-NR807 to the latest MC 17 build. I am playing .flac files with the following settings:
Generic DLNA, Audio, "Convert unsupported formats" and "Encoder: Uncompressed - L16 - No header"
Generic DLNA, Advanced, "DLNA", "DLNA Extra" and "Playstation 3 compatible"
-
I just bough the Onkyo 509. and same issue. MC17 cannot play to the receiver. I can see it in the player list but playback is not working. :(
Thanks for your help.

Build 165 is available and should fix this.

I have updated to latest build 165. But it is still not working. When i try to access the server with the Onkyo, it hangs at " Connecting...".
When I try to play to with MC17, I still have an error message.
-
Did you try these settings?

Hi Jim.
I'm using the same settings as described. but still not working. (And The receiver can connect to internet radio, so it is not the network.)
any other idea?
-
Are you able to update the firmware of the Onkyo?
-
I did it 2 days ago. I'm not able to update anymore.

Looks like we still have an outstanding issue with that particular model.
I really could use a wireshark trace of the attempted connection from the Onkyo to MC using version 165.
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Sharing_Plug-in_Debugging_Hints (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Sharing_Plug-in_Debugging_Hints)
Outlines the method. You could email the resulting pcap file to bob (at) jriver (dot) com.
Thanks.

Eureka! almost...
I have change the sharing settings in windows network and select only audio for the receiver onkyo-TXNR509 .
and it works. almost. I can now "play to" to onkyo some music from pc or gizmo.
But when i try to access the server from the onkyo, it still have a hanging connection.
i will do the Wireshark as soon as i can. unfortunately I'm really busy this week.
Thanks

When you get a chance to try wireshark would you turn off windows media player services? It make tracing through the wireshark dump more difficult. Thanks...

This new version, once again causes my Onkyo to stay stuck on "connecting". This was corrected in a test build I was directed to.
-
Ok, see attached the record.
Let me know if I've done it correctly. not sure what i have recorded.
Wireshark is not really easy for beginner.
Cheers.
-
Ok, we've got it figured out. The Onkyo's that are failing can't handle a playlist container ANYWHERE, even buried under playlists.
Also, I've gotten some feedback that the image, video and playlist top level items are "x"'d out. Is that what you all are seeing??
I'm thinking that the only way to do playlists for the Onkyo is by customizing the view for the DLNA server and putting it under Audio.
You could probably get rid of image, video and playlists at the top level too.
-
The hang fix will be in builds >=17.0.169
-
Yes, i created a new dlna server without playlist and it's connecting fine now. But not having the playlist is really practical.
Also i cannot "play to" the onkyo. weird. as i have it working early in the week.
look forward for the new build . Thanks!

I just installed 17.0.170 today but unfortunately I still have issues
1) From the Onkyo receiver when I try to connect to MC17, it hangs forever
(note that it works if I connect to Windows media server)
2) From MC17 when I send some playlists to the Onkyo I get an error
"There was a problem controlling the selected DLNA decice. Double check your decide, server and network settings"
-
Yep. still the same issues after the update. Bob, Do you another wireshark done? with the updated build?
-
What is strange is that with a simplify DLNA server (only audio, no video, no playlist, no image) Onkyo can connect easy to the server. Through the onkyo remote app, i can navigate through the librairy. But , even if i link this DLNA with the Onkyo player, i cannot "PLay to" . I still have the error message.
It looks like MC cannot talk to onkyo, but onkyo can read MC.
Hope this help.

Yes, with the updated build please.

Voila! I have done one but it's too big for the forum . I send it to bob at jriver . com .
Let me know.

Thanks for sending it, I took a look however it's hard to read through the streams since it's got your samba server in the mix too.
You need to turn on the capture filter so that only your PC and the Onkyo are in the dump.
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Sharing_Plug-in_Debugging_Hints
If the IP addresses stay the same from the dump you sent me the capture->options->capture filter line should look like this:
host 192.168.1.4 and host 192.168.1.12
Start the capture in that options screen when every thing is set to go, just before you try to push something to the device.
Stop the capture as soon as you see an error.
The resulting file should be quite small.
If we don't get enough data, you may have to do another where you start the capture just before starting MC, then stop it as soon as the error occurs.
Thanks!
-
Hi Bob. With the filter as you required. A bit smaller now :)
I tried first to push something through. then around line 760, i tried to connect Onkyo to media center.
-
I did another one. even smaller. line 59 and after is when i tried to connect to the media center with Onkyo.

Excellent dump, thanks!
I still see the playlist container in there. What build are you using? Would you try the latest please (17.0.172). You can get it by setting your Help->Update channels to "latest". If you don't want to have it updating everytime there is a new build in the future, you can set the update to manual and run the update manually. Let me know the results please.
-
I was using before build 170.
I have updated to build 172. and .. still having issues. same as before. see another wireshark. line 108 is when i tried to connect the onkyo.

Ugh, sorry. I've got it now (there was one more instance of the playlist container). Fixed in next build >=17.0.174.
-
Thanks Bob. Look forward to try the new build.
However, yesterday i realize that we are missing the real problem: "play to" function is not working.
i cannot control the Device.
Last week, when i created a new dlna server without any playlist, i could connect but still couldn't "play to" Onkyo.
If the new build doesn't work, i will send a new wireshark of when i tried to "play to" Cheers.

It's possible the play-to doesn't appreciate the missing top level categories.
I'll PM you with a test build. You probably should reset the views to default before trying the play-to again.
Then if you could, test pulling from it, something in audio->album would be the best test.
After that try pushing the same album to it.
-
Bob, you are the king! it's working!
THANKS!
-
Hoping that this will fix it for my 709 as well. Would be huge. Particularly, if I can somehow control 'zone 2' on the device as well.... Thanks for working on this!
-
I realise this is an old one but was there any resolution to this as I am experiencing the same issue.
-
Just realised that this thread is not in relation to the Onkyo android remote app which is what my issue is with so probably not relevant
