Hi
No real problems just a question
I have 2 computers running MC one in my "den" I use to clean up tags edit all my audio files then I send the audio files to my front room Laptop computer to
play the music and to watch Theatre view on my big screen
The "den" computer is fine a Jr score of 2727 (fairly new computer)
The front room computer gives a score of around 931 and is a bit slow with the built in 3D visualizations - CPU usage very high sometimes
So I don't want to replace the "front room" computer just speed it up
Its sole purpose in life is to run MC and to connect to the internet for theatre view nothing else
I have removed Microsoft .NET etc and have MSSE as the anti virus set up as in your support pages
Its Win 7 64bit 4GB memory
So which services etc can I turn off to run only MC and nothing else ?

Personally I don't think it will help.
Back in the days I used to try to squeeze the last bit of performance out of a pc by turning off all sorts of things. Back then pc's were a lot slower and mostly single cpu/single cores. Overall performance never came up but what it changed was the occasional stutter during a 3d shooter when some background thing suddenly became active. Very situational and never a garantee it even worked (coincidence, placebo, etc).
Stopping services is not going to help you IMHO.

For little cost I would double the RAM to 8GB.

That won't give the performance increase he is looking for.
Running MC19 with Memory playback and background tasks such as analysis and total my htpc is using around 2GB (looking at it right now). Adding an extra 4GB won't matter.
So unless he's using other memory hungry programs its not going to change much.
Adding memory brings a performance increase if there isn't enough memory and Windows starts swapping out to disk.
That's not to say adding memory is bad; on the contrary. All I'm saying is that its probably not what he's looking for that's all.

He didn't ask which services he could simply stop, he asked whether he could speed things up by stopping services.
Stopping no amount of services will accomplish that what he asked.
Stopping services for a pc you work on will more often than not lead to trouble. My advise is to leave it as it is unless you know exactly what you're doing (but then you won't be here to ask :)).

More of a CPU getting up to near 100% - again only when using the built in visualizations
My G-Force visualization plug in downloaded works ok
As you can see from the MC report I have NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS built in to the laptop and SB Xtreme Audio Notebook expresscard 54 (SPDIF out) which I hoped would take a bit of load off the CPU
So my plan was to turn off any services etc and things running in the background to save any extra draw on the CPU - the task manager is a bit vague on how much each service / process is actually using

This is not a good idea. It can cause problems.
Antivirus programs can be a factor.

You might use Task Manager to see whether any services are using significant amounts of CPU time or doing much I/O. On my PCs, they don't.

Yes that's the plan my favourite built in visualization is "Spectrum Analyzer" which looks and works great on my "den" computer but
struggles a bit on my front room laptop and sends the CPU usage sky high
So probably answering my own question my Laptop is not up to top end graphics by the look of it.

You could try running CCleaner or a fresh install of the OS.
As for memory I believe there is a way to increase the virtual memory if needs be.

Actually that is not true, and that is what Black Viper's site is about.
Microsoft actually later disabled some of the services that he years ago recommended be disabled...
By the way, for a Home Theater PC that is used in real time, stopping services that can startup at any point, can lead to smoother playback for both video and audio.

I'm sorry, but I do not agree, and JRiver does not recommend disabling Windows services.
