Olive 04HD and MC/JRemote
« on: December 26, 2015, 02:22:36 am »

I noticed that my Olive 04HD was always in the renderer list in Playing Now so I decided to try selecting it to see if if would play the files in my NAS using JRemote. (The Olive is such a disaster operationally, including a lousy GUI and in terms of reliability, that I rarely use it. However it sounds terrific feeding the Bel Canto DAC3.5VB MKII.) It worked and sounded great, but it would only play one track from an album at a time. Is there any setting in MC that can get it to play a whole album? The Olive is a closed system and I have no hacking abilities so I doubt that I can change any settings in their software.

Try setting SetNextAVtransport in MC.

Take a look at Andrew's analyzer.

Thanks for redirecting Jim. I looked in several places, including Options-Media Network-Add or Configure DLNA servers but couldn't find Next AV transport. Where is it?

Please provide a link to Andrew's analyzer. Couldn't find it by searching forum or wiki.

On this board, you should see him.  You can also search for members.

MC's options has a search window.  I believe it's under Media Network > Advanced > DLNA Servers.

I believe it's under Media Network > ...

This is an attribute of the renderer not of the server, so you have to right click on the renderer in Playing Now, and select DLNA options, Disable SetNext support.

Thank you Andrew! I disabled SetNet support and that provided one improvement. I can click next track while one track is playing or even after the first track has finished and it will move to the next track, which it didn't do before. But it won't go to the next track automatically, as JRemote says it will when you start any track in an album, except of course the last track. It also won't fast forward or reverse on the JRemote elapsed time bar, which isn't critical, but would be a very nice feature to have. It won't adjust volume in JRemote, which I can definitely do without, as I usually keep it at 100%.

Do I also have to set SetNextAVtransport? I wasn't able to find it where Jim thought it was.

Do you want me to run your Analyzer?

It sounds like you need to both disable SetNext(AVTransportURI) support, and also Ignore Transport Events..

Andrew, I disabled both as you suggested and ran your analyzer. There are a number of other settings that need to be changed and I will do my best to locate them. I have to leave for a short hike now and will continue when I get back. Thanks again. :)

Jim, I followed Andrew's suggestion, but still couldn't play a whole CD. So I ran his analyzer, found some other settings that needed to be changed and actually found all of them and made the changes! (I'm learning.) But even with those other changes, it still only plays a track at a time. And I get the same result whether or not Disable SetNext support is checked. So I just sent him a copy of the report to see if he can suggest anything else.

I got the report; but it seems to be incomplete; it has nothing under "Declared Supported Audio, Image & Video Formats"; which means either the tests failed to complete for some external reason, or (which I suspect) that the renderer has a really faulty implementation of the UPNP specification.

To be honest Andrew, I am surprised that I have gotten as far as playing a track at a time, given Olive's notoriously dodgy software and unreliable operation. I ran the analyzer while the Olive wasn't playing a track. I will try it tomorrow while it is playing one and then check to see if anything came up under the Audio, Image and Video Formats tabs.

There are three things that I learned from your log report..

Model Name=MediaRenderer 0.1
Serial Number=12345678
Unique Product Code=123456789

These are sure signs that this renderer is not at all ripe for release..

AVT:SetNextAVTransportURI (gapless play)=Supported

This tells us that you do not have to Disable SetNext support (although disabling it will do no harm, because it just prevents gapless playback, and your problem is getting it to play at all...)

AVT:Event Subscription=Fail
Play test file result=Play failed => Start Ok / Time out / Subscribe error

This tells us that the renderer does not support the UPnP Eventing model; so you need to select "Ignore Transport Events (use polling mode)".

The settings for this renderer are in the screenshot below..

Andrew, it looks like we have to give up on the Olive. I am getting much better results with the renderer in my Oppo BDP103 Blu-ray player, but it looks like there is a problem with gapless play. I emailed you the analyzer report. Thanks for all your help.

On the Oppo you need to check "Disable SetNext" but not check "Ignore Transport Events".
The Oppo does not support gapless play so there will always be a short gap between tracks.

Yes I saw in Renderer Information that gapless play wasn't supported, but this is the first time I have heard what that lack of support sounds like. I am surprised, given their audiophile cred, especially in the more expensive 105 player, that they would not support this. Could a software or firmware upgrade change this? If so, I could try sending them some feedback about the issue. I am one of their dealers so they might listen. Thanks again. :)

There are no current software updates for the Oppo that fix this. Last time I asked I think their problem was that they buy a standard UPNP software library from another software house who does not offer gapless support. Otherwise the Oppo software guys would probably have already added this feature to the software themselves. But there is certainly no harm in contacting their tech support guys about it anyway...
