Newly installed JRiver MC won't play any ripped CDs
« on: November 28, 2015, 08:23:45 am »

Hi,

I've just installed JRiver Media Center for the first time and configured it with my ESI Juli@ sound card: Audio Device > ASIO 2.0 - ESI Juli@ [ASIO].

When I try to play any ripped CDs it looks like playback stops immediately indicating "0:01/3:50 - 371kbps 1 of 1..." for example.

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Thanks!

Did you set up your audio?  See the Audio topics on our wiki.

+1 also make sure you have read the wiki about setting up your import settings ... other wise there is not enough information to go on. (do you mean that downloaded digital music plays and not files from cds you ripped ?)

Thanks for the reply. I have experimented further.

JRiver will play my ripped CDs and CDs but only if I run JRiver as Administrator. Any suggestions please?

That said, I don't get any audio from the  S/PDIF output of my Juli@ card so I'm guessing there's an issue with the setup of that.

Its console displays OK and it appears under Audio Device in JRiver Options: ASIO 2.0 - ESI Juli@ [ASIO].

While it doesn't appear as Playback device in Windows Sound Settings it is listed in Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers.

Anyway, I've emailed ESI Support.

Thanks again.

ok I do not know this card, and haven't used an internal sound card for a long time now, but I'd think it should show up. It looks like you have to sort the installation of your card out first.

Begin by verifying that your Operating System recognizes your sound device. If the OS cannot use the device, then Media Center will not be able to use it either.
Please read this if you haven't already => https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Audio_Setup#Windows

So you get their "console" to show in the task bar?  Asuming you have read this http://download.esi-audiotechnik.com/download/ESI/Juli@/Juli@-English.pdf from their site, AND installed their newest drivers from their site (I have no idea what OS you are on, but if it is Win 10 you better have their latest drivers), you should be able to test the SPDIF output from their console.

How about playback from another player? IMO, not knowing this card, before proceeding I would make sure the installation of the ESI card with the newest drivers work or we are going to go around in circles. Or you could install JRiver via the motherboard outputs I suppose, but you would need another dac temporarily which seems a bit convoluted  8)

You might want to try a second post in the DAC section on this forum ... maybe some who has your DAC and is more knowledgeable could help and save you some time.

Hi,

I have resolved my Juli@ sound card installation issues. The card now appears as a playback device.

I have tried both the S/PDIF and TOSLINK outputs from the Juli@ card. When I adjust the sound level using the Windows 10 sound level control I get a chime from these outputs.

However, there is no output from JRiver on either of these outputs. I am getting music from the Juli@ analog audio outputs.

I have attached 3 screenshots. sound.jpg shows the 3 playback devices: Speakers (Juli@ Audio, Ready), Juli@ Ch34 (Juli@ Audio, Default Device) and  Juli@ Ch12 (Juli@ Audio, Ready).

Note that "Speakers (Juli@ Audio, Ready)" has sound level showing but it shouldn't.

Console.jpg is the Juli@ console. It shows output on the analog outputs.

JRiver options shows all the Juli@ output options. I've tried them all without success.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks!

OK. I have it working now. Further playing around in JRiver Options and noted Note: Changes take effect once playback is stopped.

Selected Default Audio Device [Direct Sound], stopped and restarted playback and Eureka!

ok that works but you don't want to use direct sound in my opinion. If you do you are going to go through the windows mixer -- one of the reasons to use JRiver is to avoid windows "pollution" and volume control (it should be set to 100%) I would think you should be using the Juli Asio or WASAPI choices in JRiver. Can't get the windows pics to display for some reason. Keep Windows sound level at 100% regardless ... yo
.
I have to run for the WE, so maybe someone else can help him sort this .... bump

Thanks for this. I couldn't get any audio out of the "ASIO 2.0 - ESI Juli@ [ASIO]" option but the "Juli@ Ch34 (Juli@ Audio) [WASAPI]" option works fine.
