RELENTLESS CD BURNING ERROR
« on: August 25, 2003, 05:25:33 am »

Hello,

I would have written this much earlier, but I haven't been able to connect my computer to the internet for about six weeks.

Without fail, every time that I try to burn a CD with Media Center, it goes through all of the processes and writes every track through the final one.  Moments before its about to finish, the program is forced to close and I am left angrily looking at the Microsoft error reporting dialogue.

The CDs tend to still work, but obviously it doesn't seem like this should be happening, and I when I try to update the software it indicates that there are no updates available.

I'm sure this problem is unusual and might be limited to my own experience, because otherwise I'm sure it would have been fixed.

What could be happening, and how can it be resolved?

First, are you on a recent build? There was a fix quite a while back that could have been applicable to this problem.
If you are on a recent build, please post your system info here (from the MC help menu) and email me a log file of a CD burning session using these instructions:

Turn on MC's logging for CD burning by changing the value of this registry key from zero (0) to one (1):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Writer\Logger

Then just start up Media Center and try to burn a CD. Then exit MC and find a file in the MC program directory called "cdwriter.log" and email that to me. Remember that the log file is overwritten each time you start up MC, so you must send the file before restarting MC.

Thanks!

Hello John,

The only thing in MC's program files with a name that included "cdwriter" that I was able to find was cdwriter.ocx, and I do not know how to open this file to change the logging thing, if that's indeed how I should be doing it.

Otherwise, I lack any sort of sophisticated understanding of software coding and programming, so perhaps there's something else you can tell me to make me understand how to enable the logging.

Thank you for your help.

Cordially,

Patrick

There have been a lot of fixes since the 9.0.180 build of MC. I would recommend updating to the latest 9.1 beta version (see the top posting about "... beta available") and see if that fixes the CD burning problem. If that doesn't remedy it, I can help you get the logging working.

Thanks,
John T.

I had the same problem  , but only one or two times burning mp3 cds.
And ,in fact ,the cd is good and plays.

Will let you know if it happens again and will try to give you as much infos as  possible.
It was with 9,1 when you put the new fonctions concerning long name files -- well ,you know what i mean..-

It seems that I will need some help turning on the logging, because even with 9.1 the cds don't seem to be burning properly.

I cannot account for this in my wildest dreams, since it used to work flawlessly, and cd burning has since degenerated into an exercise in futility and a reliance on absent luck. :-/

My most recent attempt has left it stalled for at least 15 minutes on "preparing track 16 of 16."  The "write progress" status bar shows nothing, and I don't think it's going to happen.

I can try again, I just really would like to stop wasting cds and have everything work so well again like it used to.

I posted it earlier today above, so it should be the same.  I'm trying yet another cd now, and it's only moments from completion.  If the same problem remains, I'll know, and if it works, it will be quite a relief. :)

The reason I asked is that you mentioned 9.1.  Can you try it?

shastasheen,

The following is an automated way to enable/disable CD writter logging.  Note:  This only works for Windows XP, and you need admistrator privileges.

To Enable Logging

Open up your favorite text editor (or notepad), and cut-and-paste the following into a new text document (only the text highlighted in gray):

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Writer]
"Logger"=dword:00000001

When saving the file, traverse to your "Desktop", and then save it as "mc_enable_cd_logging.reg" (and INCLUDE the quotes, otherwise, notepad.exe will tack on a .txt extension).

To Disable Logging

Open up your favorite text editor (or notepad), and cut-and-paste the following into a new text document (only the text highlighted in gray):

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Writer]
"Logger"=dword:00000000

When saving the file, traverse to your "Desktop", and then save it as "mc_disable_cd_logging.reg" (and INCLUDE the quotes, otherwise, notepad.exe will tack on a .txt extension).

Two new shortcuts now should be sitting on your destop.  Double-click on either of them to update your registry.  (You'll get an "Are you sure..." dialog box; click okay; then you'll get another dialog box stating that the registry has been updated; click okay.)

Thanks Omni.

Shastasheen-
If you prefer, I could email you the scripts that Omni demonstrated. Could you post new system info since you've upgraded to version 9.1?

Thanks!
