Trial Software Assistance
« on: August 17, 2003, 08:36:02 pm »

I once took a brief look at Media Center a while ago and didnt see what I was looking for. Now I am looking at MainLobby/CD Lobby and it requires Media Center to work. However I can not use Media Center as it says my trial period has ended. Is there any way to fix this?

When you say 'Is there any way to fix this?' (implying a fault) you're really saying 'JRiver, can I please have an extension to my trial period?'

There you are - I said it for you.  They are very helpful chappies at JRiver so I'll be very surprised if they don't come up with a way to help you out.  Good luck.

Well extend is one way to phrase it. I first installed it to check out HTPC front ends about 2 months ago. After a few days uninstalled it. Now that I am checking out Mainlobby their new Musiclobby requires this software. So you can decide if that is an extension or trial #2.  ;D

And do not think you will get another, so i would not wait around looking for one.

What would stop somebody from just extending their trial indefinitely?

That's the reason they can't extend them. They may as well just give it out for free.

Guys,

OK... so his name is a little ironic (cheapguy69), but his point is valid.  He wants to demo some new software - software that he's never demo'd before.  And he thinks JRiver is standing in his way.

Though I didn't think MusicLobby *required* MC...  does it really?

cheap:  Worst-case, you'd have to reformat, right?  I've always wondered how software knows it's been installed before - does it leave a trace in the registry?

But, really, "buy it" is hardly a solution for this guy!

I *really* dislike the licensing model JRiver uses.  Sure, it's certainly a "fair" model, but it's also a PITA.  I don't have any other software (among about fifteen heavy-duty and five lighter titles) that uses such a model.

I'd love to get educated in this area, though...  are there any studies that point to this model being more profitable (from an anti-piracy perspective)?

Scott,
This isn't open for discussion.  Sorry.
