Under XP MC20 plays DVD files from SD cards with no problems.  The state of the write protect switch is ignored.  Under Windows 7 both MC20 and MC21 only allow play if the write protect switch is in the write enabled state.  If the switch is in the write protect state the screen appears to start play but immediately stops and returns to normal.  No error message is displayed.

Is this the expected action under Windows 7 or a hiccup in the code?

I asked the team if someone could test a read-only device because I don't have one handy.

If this helps any, I run win 8.1 and use micro-sdxc cards.  The directories are read-only (files inherit) and the files are flagged archive.  All play properly as archive and as read-only, when I tested that also.

Could this be a case of a corrupt file?  That happened to me also.

The individual video files are not write protected.  Only the position of the mechanical switch on the side of the SD card seems to matter.  Ignored by XP, immediately stops play under Win7.  Does Win 7 send back an unexpected status code when the device is opened which causes the player to terminate?

Yeah, it fires EC_DVD_PLAYBACK_STOPPED as soon as it starts trying to play.

DVD playback is kind of a black box, so I'm not sure if we'll be able to do anything about it.
