JRiver won't open
« on: May 11, 2017, 09:14:15 am »

I have an ongoing problem with JRiver. Often, it will not open. I get this message:

"Media Center 22 is running, but there may be a problem. Possible causes:

1. The program is also running under a different user account.
2. Media Center 22 and Media Server are both in Windows Startup. You must remove one.
3. The program is not responding for an unknown reason.

Please try rebooting the computer. Verify that no other user accounts are running the program."

I am not running the program under another user account. (I should say, I originally signed in with an different email for the trial period, but have not used that email again.) Neither MC22 or Media Server are in Windows Startup. I have rebooted my computer several times.

Oddly, sometimes, after a period of time, even with that error message, JRiver will open. I can play music, sometimes it will even stream to my Squeezebox Touch; not always. And, though it is open, I lose functionality. If I try to rip or burn audio, the program stops responding.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program. No luck.

The program was working fine for quite a long time before this, though I had this problem some time ago. After fiddling around for MANY hours, not really knowing what I was doing, it began working fine, until now.

I am an adequately able computer user, but far from tech savvy.

Thanks,
--Neil

This is one of those weird problems that often have weird causes.  Antivirus software is a possibility.  See the "Weird Problems" link in my signature for more ideas.

I'm not sure what you mean by "in my signature."

In Jim's signature (below his post) is a link that says Weird problems, which is what he's referring to.

I went through all pages of Weird Problems. The only thing that seemed applicable, as Jim said, is an antivirus program or firewall.

I disabled Windows Defender and Firewall. Rebooted. Didn't help.

What version of Windows are you using?

It *could* be because of the user account, especially if you're using Windows 10 (and logged in via a Microsoft account). If I had to guess, that could be why since Windows creates the system account folder based on the email address used to sign in.

One thing you could do, if this is the case, is uninstall MC then go to...

Code: [Select]
%APPDATA%
In File Explorer and remove the J River folder contained within (I'd make a backup of the folder to the desktop or before uninstalling MC opens go to File > Library > Back Up Library... and save a backup to the desktop, just in case). This will reset all settings (hence the backup), but it might fix the issue. Then reinstall MC.

You could try this:
Sometimes MC doesn't close properly from the previous session and a process is left trailing. The error message you see will occur when that happens too. You can try launching Task Manager and ending any JR or media center tasks running before trying to launch the application.

AD, I am using Windows 10, but I am signed into JRiver with a gmail account. Or do you mean signed into my computer with a Microsoft account . . . Yes.

Still follow your directions? Not sure where I find File>Library>Back Up Library. Pointing to JRiver in its program file in File Explorer, the File menu does not have that choice.

fitbrit, I did check that. No dice. Thanks.

Oh, I thought you meant you changed the email of your Microsoft account on Windows 10. That *could* change the user account folder, not sure (since that could break stuff if it changed, which MS probably doesn't do - I'd have to try it in a VM at some point).

What I meant by the File menu thing is, if/when JRiver Media Center eventually opens, go to its File > Library > Back Up Library... to create a backup (e.g. on the desktop). Then uninstall MC, remove the J River folder under %APPDATA% and then reinstall MC and see if it works then. Also if you're using Windows Defender (the default that comes with Windows 10 unless you install a dedicated antivirus application) you can try the taming Windows Defender method here: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender

Would there be a difference if my library is on an external hard drive?

I guess that's not what you are referring to. JRiver finally opened. Library successfully backed up. Onward.

On Uninstall, am I correct to assume check the box removing all library files?

After reinstall, JRiver did not open. Thinking the process may have been interrupted, since it didn't open, I tried the .exe file again. Message says:

"JRiver Media Center 22 Open. Install Wizard has detected a running copy of JRiver Media Center 22. Do you want Install Wizard to close JRiver Media Center 22 and continue setup?" (I chose No.)

Nothing showing on the screen. JRiver not shown in the Start menu list of files, but program files do appear in File Explorer.

When you say your library is on an external drive do you mean the music files

YourLIBRARY is a small file 4 - 6 Mb that lives in your C drive in AppData/username/roaming/ j river 22 etc . If it were on a USB drive it would be too slow

Please confirm that . It would give you problems if it were external

Right. The library is in the correct file on the C drive. My music files are on the external hard drive.

What I have discovered since yesterday is that the program is exceedingly slow. I still get the error message referenced above. The program then takes almost 5 minutes to open. When I try to burn or rip a disc, it takes even longer to activate the prompt, to select the album to rip or burn, and then completely freezes up.

"JRiver Media Center 22 Open. Install Wizard has detected a running copy of JRiver Media Center 22. Do you want Install Wizard to close JRiver Media Center 22 and continue setup?" (I chose No)
This tells me that after installing, you are double clicking the installer again, rather than the shortcut that launched the program. They both have the same icon. Did you save the installer on your desktop?
The installer detects that MC is already running, hence that prompt. Follow previous advice to check for the running process in the Windows task manager, and end that process, then start again.

No, the installer is saved in my download file, not on the desktop.

When I check task manager, there is only one listing. Also, when the program "hangs," task manager will not let me close it.
