M4P Music will not play even though Quicktime Engine Enabled
« on: December 28, 2017, 02:41:39 pm »

I have many music files downloaded from iTunes in M4P format.
I have imported them into MC23 library to play, as I use MC23 exclusively when a home.
But they will not play in MC23.
Even though I have enabled the "Quicktime Engine" under Tools->Options->File Types it still does not work.
Can anyone help?

Does that even work anymore? AFAIK Apple discontinued QuickTime for Windows some time ago. It's been some time since I've last seen a M4P file that's protected with Apple's DRM.

Yes Quicktime is discontinued...but MC23 still has a setting to use the "Quicktime Engine" (whatever that means). In any case I have 78 m4p files downloaded from iTunes that I can't convert, nor can I play on MC23 :-(

Just a whacky idea: try making a copy of the file and renaming its file extension from M4P to M4A or M4V or even MP4, and see if any of those variants will play in MC. (Reason is that these files all have more or less the same internal data structure).

Thanks for suggestion....but did not work...I also burned a DVD of M4P songs and tried to re-import them to iTunes...no luck there either

Fundamentally I am still bothered as to why the MC23 option under FILE TYPES to use the "QuickTime Engine" does not work for the files

do they play in another player (itunes, VLC, WMP?)

if itunes couldn't import them, it implies the files have a problem - try playing them with something else

Are you on the MC 64 bit or 32 bit version?

I think it 32 bit....Help About....says nothing but the version on the top line, so I assume if it was 64 bit it would show it?

Help - About - Top line will say 64 bit after the version number if it is 64 bit. 32 bit will just show the version number.

No, the QuickTime engine is not supported at all in 64-bit. On that note, as its generally a discontinued product from Apple, there are no guarantees that it'll work at all in the future.
