How Can I Convert My System To A Server?

Lets say I would like to have an Internet address for my computer and share data and files within a dir of my computer with others.

Is there a way to do this using Windows XP?

Sure - a web server does just that, or you could use FTP server software.

You can use the free dyndns.org if you have an internet service that gives dynamic IPs.

I use Guild FTPd as an FTP server to share files over the Internet. It is free (yay!), very robust, free (yay!), pretty secure (securityfocus.com's databases don't show any serious security risks in the current version), and free (yay!). You can find it at:

You will also need either a static IP address from your ISP (usually expensive) or a dynamic DNS redirection service (usually free). For dynamic DNS redirection, I use dyndns.org. The way dyndns works is, you run a program on your machine that continually tells dyndns.org what your current IP address is, and your friends can get to that address by putting in a certain domain name. My domain name is joshuab.dyndns.org. Some home gateways have the ability to automatically update dyndns with your address, which means you don't have to run the client on your machine.

my IP Address does not change I am on a cable modem also

I looked at the screen shots, and it looks ok for me to play with.

My hope is to use the FTP server to support some of my programs with information.

You could use a throwaway computer and Linux. The web server is Appache. FTP is part of the OS.

Need any parts?

We used to have a server with a hard drive that was wired to a string of Christmas tree lights. It was pretty cool to watch the disk access.

really just playing around.

since i know how to get CD Data From FreeDB and CDDB i was just thinking of playing with somthing else for a change.

it would be nice to read what CD MC9 has loaded in the drive bay. and if i could read that info i could maybe do somthing with FreeDB As a backup to YADB.

maybe i can find a work around.

I could use It (maybe) and the FTP to send and get info from the server.

Just somthing to play with and take up my time untill my tomatoes Get red, i already have the bacon.

Maybe I will take some pictures to finish off that role of film of my garden today between the rain drops.

King ,this does not mean you have a static ip adress.
Ask your internet provider.
Like you i have the same adress since day one.
But my adress CAN and MAY change.

Not a big deal if you set all to changing adress- A free software as DirectUpdate will monitor it.

If your adress does not change for 25 days ,you will get an email from dyndns.org telling you to make a forced update. The mail has a link to the page where to do it.

The main problem is speed.
You must have a 128KPs upload speed.
Means around 16 kp/s download speed.
Less if you need to keep some speed to feed the connection and not slowing you surf speed.
So,can be around 14 kp/s

This is the total speed. To share between all users.
10 users get a 1,4 kp/s download speed... back to old Napster times.....

My FTP site is runing 24/24 ,with uploads running and ,so far ,no problem

Well i was not sure of my address up untill i reinstalled windows.

now i see i still have the same address i had back 2 years ago when i got this cable modem. i had another one once but that was an extra one and payed $10 each month for it.

but since i have a router now i only need the one.

I was playing around with a number of FTP server apps a couple weeks ago, and I settled down with Serv-U. It's very easy to use and it's free.

Figuring out how to set it up behind my router was the hard part though. This took me many hours. (This has nothing to do with which ftp server software you use though.) And I used the support webpages of several different apps to figure it out. Let me know if you want any more info; I can go dig it up.

Ser-U is the one i use ,and other people i know.
So far no problem with it.
Having only a FTP ,did not take long to set

This is one of the major PROs of Guild FTPd, for me. You can specify what port range it will give out for PASV transfers and then open that range through your firewall. That way, if both you and the person who is FTP'ing to you are behind a firewall, it can still work. Normally, if both the server and the client are behind a firewall, you can't FTP.

I've been doing this for ages.

I have G6 ftp server setup and it works great for my ftp.
For my web server I use Apache.
It's on an XP machine and I use a program called Direct Update to enable me to always access my machine even with a dynamic IP address.

I use the web server as a development server and the ftp just for access to my files. All this is happening on my main machine that I also do development with and every day tasks. Never had any problems.

Ok I Found And Downloaded The Apache HTTP web server.

I see to install it i need a domain name.

So if i go get a Domain Name how do they know what my IP address is (i guess i need to tell them when i buy a domain name) and what happens if it does change is there away to change it later?

When you register your domain, or sometime later, you tell the registrar what machine(s) to use for DNS. These machines then take care of your DNS. Often these machines are controlled by the registrar.

Small ISP's often do a good job of hosting and DNS. We used to do a little ISP work, but no more.

King - U dont need a domain name for apache.

It will support virtual hosting extremely well.
It might take u a while to get used to the configuration files but once you do you'll find it extremely powerful.

A basic setup for a domain is something along the lines of this:

ServerName testSite // Name the site is referenced by (apache wont serve the site unless your domain is called using this domain name - can be a re-direct domain name - I use www.dyndns.org)
ServerAlias AnyOtherNameYouWantApacheToServeThisSiteFor // If u want it to be accessible for more than one name
DocumentRoot E:\www\myTestSite
ErrorLog logs/myTestSite-error.log // Optional seperate logs for the site
CustomLog logs/myTestSite-access.log common

(this is with virtual hosting support turned on)

U can just type anything u wanted for the domain name it asks you for when installing. I just make up stuff.

If u also then want to be able to access your server easily and access it with multiple seperate domains, this might seem tricky as the only way you have to call ur own computer in a web browser is: http://localhost/

U can get around this though by finding a file called: 'HOSTS' in your windows directory.
If you modify this you can setup ANY name you want to point to your IP address. Web browsers access this first to resolve domain names before looking them up online.

I usually do stuff like:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 myTestSite
127.0.0.1 whateverIwant

and by not putting an extension on them u dont have to worry about interfering with valid sites. U can however access your computer then using any of the names u set up.

Dont forget to modify your apache config file though so that it has these names as server alias's for whichever site u want apache to serve.

i have it redirected to my website on road runner for now.

what i need now is to get Apache 2.0.46 working.

it is installed

I have in the window "Apache2" and a red dot in front of it with a black ring around it (i guess that may or may not mean anything)

it states running none of 1 services

if i click on the service and press start i get the error message "Requested operation Failed!"

Ok i got my web server to work sort of.

without router works fine now that i know road runner blocks port 80 so i redirected everything to 8080 and it works fine up to the point where i hook the router up.

I did go into the router and on port forwarding from 8080 to 8080. it stil does not work with router.

since this does work without router and does not work with router i would think it is the router settings.

Any router users out there know the answer?

I will look for the manual, i don't remember much of a manual that came with it however.

Update:

The manual tells me "thanks for buying Linksys, now get out of my face".

well really it is two pages and tells you where to plug in the little square cable connecter and that helped me allot.
