Upgrading from MC21 to MC24 & Moving to New Computer
« on: May 30, 2018, 07:20:12 pm »

Hello,

I'm Anthony.

I'm currently on an old desktop PC running Windows 32bit XP with MC21 on it.
This PC does not have wireless.

Recently purchased new laptop running Windows 64bit Windows 10.
Hardwiring Ethernet means disconnecting the PC.

I upgraded to MC24 on PC last night but it didn't download because it said I used
the wrong key.  Today, (Wednesday) I downloaded the MC24 Trial Version on new
laptop.

Question(s) now is:
How do I get my Library from PC to New Laptop?
How do I convert my MC24 Trial Version to permanent version since I have already
paid for it?

Hope I didn't leave anything out.
Note: I do have an External Hard Drive available for use.

Thanks,
Anthony

You can restore your MC24 license after you have installed MC24.  Here's how:

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License

The wiki has a topic called Moving Files .

The idea is to copy the media files and a library backup to the new computer. Then restore the library backup on the new computer and point the new library to the media files.

If you have both of the computers on a network and have them set up to copy files between them, then you can copy the files for the old to the new system over the network. You can just use windows explorer to do that

Otherwise, you can copy the files to the external drive, connect the external drive to the new computer and copy the files to the new computer.  You can just use windows explorer to do that. Using an external drive may be faster depending on the network.

You should be able to do a backup of MC21 (File - Library -  Backup), move that backup to the new system, and restore the backup to the new system. I think a MC21 backup can be restored to a MC24 but am not sure. Let's hope so.

If the file structure on the new computer is the same as the old computer, then the library should just work.  That is, if the music files are in the same directories, like c:\jriver music\, then it should be OK. If the directory structure is different you can use the Library Tools - Rename, Move, Copy function to reset the directory structure. The easiest way is to just reproduce the file structure for the media files on the new system.

The Moving Files Wiki Entry has more details, including a link to a very detailed description of the process.

If that makes sense, give it a try. If not, ask some questions.

Thanks DTC for more detailed instructions.

I have copied over my backup file and put in same structure as MC21.

I had put my music on an external drive and I guess I erased it in my frustration because it didn't look the same when I pulled it up previously in MC24.  That was before I had backup file moved and restored.

Now it's going to take another 90mins for me to copy my music files again.
I copied just one album over and so far it looks pretty good after playing around
with it.  I'm trying to get use to using Windows 10 at the same time.  Right now I'm
having trouble widening my column headings.

Will play around with it some more tomorrow.

Thanks again for your help.  I'm sure I will be calling on you.  I have real difficulty trying
to find things (topics in Forum)

Good timing, I'm looking to do that just now too!
