Connecting to Server within LAN shows external WAN IP ?
« on: July 03, 2018, 06:35:43 pm »

I recently uninstalled MC (with registry option enabled) on my Server, then reinstalled and had to go through all the options that don't get restored from library restore. Ever since that, when I connect to the Server from all my Clients in the house, on the same LAN, it says "Attempting connection to c-XX-XX-XXX-XX-hsd1.ca...." which is my external WAN IP. Before I uninstalled MC it would say connecting to the local dhcp IP of the Server like 192.168.1.XX

Why is it now using the external WAN IP, not the internal dhcp IP of the Server PC?
Can I change it back?
Should I change it back?

Second question - can I backup a registry key? So that next time someone recommends I uninstall MC, I can restore all those settings, in stead of picking through them all one at a time over the follow days. What is the registry key to backup?

I don't recommend the registry action you're considering.

When you use the Access Key, it will try the inside address, then the outside address, etc. until it can connect.  Normally, on the same LAN, the connection would work on the inside address and not on the outside address.  The wiki explains this.

Ah access key, that is what changed on the Server after the re-install. Mystery solved.

If backing up the MC registry key(s) is not recommended, why are all those "orphan" MC settings not rolled into the library backup in the first place?

We're imperfect.  It's the sad truth.
