MC26.exe 26.0.18.0 Crashed
« on: January 16, 2020, 12:15:04 am »

Windows Defender is only antivirus that I run and two main plus the %APPDATA% JRiver folders are excluded.  I'm wondering if it's a possible memory leak as I found the following items in Event Viewer right after the application crash at same time.

Application Error:

I have 16GB RAM installed and virtual memory is managed by Windows 10 with the pagesys.file size currently at 14GB when this crash happened.  Let me know if this helps or you need any other information.

It crashed again.  This time, I was able to view the log and saw information pointing to madvr, but was not able to capture the screen.  When I hit report/send the log, the app took down the Windows too.

I've attached the log file.  I also reset it so that it will be smaller should it crash again tonight.  I plan to finish watching the movie even though it's crashed twice since upgrading to 26.0.18.0 from .15 tonight.

You need to do more with Windows Defender.

Guess I wasn't completely clear, my media is all on NAS and those drive folders are excluded.  Of course, your guidelines call these extra steps as optional.  So, putting aside any attempt to point blame at Windows Defender, have you any clues concerning what else might be causing MC26 to crash?  Keep in mind that I didn't see persistent failures with MC25 and earlier with the same Defender settings.  IMHO, the problem lies elsewhere, not Defender, and suggest looking at the major change that I recently made which is an upgrade to MC26 15 and then 18 very shortly after.

I will reset logging and resume watching the movie where I left off.  I will attach any new log if it happens again.

Crashed again.  Here's the bugreport.txt file.  Please examine these in support of your product.

I tried posting the log.txt file, but it's too big for 5000K limits for an attachment.  :(

Hopefully more useful info for PD.  Seems to me that MC26 is taking up too much virtual memory and hanging....

Windows Defender is still the most likely cause.

Wow, that's your response and what you call support?  I've been purchasing your product for over a decade and never needed help before, so it's very sad to see this reply.  I'm guessing you're attitude is that "Well, it's not affecting others and we haven't really changed the video playback much if any between MC25 and MC26, so the issue isn't with our product.  It's got to be Windows and the usual culprit has been Defender".  Am I warm?

Perhaps it's not MC26, but the least you could do is have someone look at the files/info that I provided and suggest something other than what appears to be the catch-all response of blaming Windows Defender.  How would you know really if it is or isn't the issue without proper PD?  Since you've provided zero help/pointers so far, I took a clue from the Windows info provided and am guessing that it has to do with the OS and something going on with virtual memory.   I made some changes to paging a few weeks ago and switched them back to the previous settings.  I will watch to see if I resolved it on my own.  Hopefully, I have.

In the meantime, besides regurgitating the same old mantra, perhaps you could provide some proof that specifically points to WinDef.   For example, what specific folder, file, or extension am I NOT excluding that's causing the crash?  Providing something more than "most likely" would constitute real support.  It would also go a long way to convincing me to turn off Defender for a time to confirm that it's the issue, then working to narrow it down to exactly when/why/what is causing the crash.  As I said, it's never been an issue before, so why now?

Can you please tell us what you are doing with MC when it crashes? e.g. playing audio  or video, browsing, serving to other clients etc.

As I recall, you've only partially followed the instructions in the Windows Defender thread.

Thanks for the replies.

@Andrew,
It crashed several times over two days while watching a UHD video off of my NAS.  That's the only time it crashed, but did so three times at different locations in the video.  It didn't just stop playing the video, but actually halted the application and even locked up Windows itself requiring power cycle.  The only issue that I see in the logs was related to virtual memory being exhausted.  I recently made changes to how and where Windows 10 stores it's pagefile.sys by moving it to a second local drive (not C:) to free up space.  I have reset these changes based on log information that indicated issues with virtual memory at the time of the crashes.  Those messages either point to this change or something like a memory leak with MC.  I tested the installed memory using Windows Memory Diagnostics and it's fine.  After switching pagefile.sys back to the local C-drive under Windows allocation control, I was able to finish the movie that crashed and watched another movie without an issues.  I will keep using MC26 for the next several days and hopefully not see anymore crashes.  I will be out of town starting next week until after the Super Bowl, so use of MC will halt while I'm away.  I'm thinking and hoping that the pagefile change was the issue and can move on.  Not sure if the logs / info that I provided so far provide any indication as to the problem, but my guess is that it was due to this change.  I basically only use this HTPC for JRiver MC and limited chrome browsing while in the theater.

@Jim,
I don't see how that other case applies to my situation.  For the record, the install of MC26.0.14.0 went smoothly as usual and same for the update to 26.0.18.0.  There are no issues related to importing or recognizing files.  The issue only cropped up while watching a UHD video.

All source and media folders have been excluded from Windows Defender.  I'm not wasting time (optionally) excluding filetypes as this could open up a security risk to files not associated with any media that I watch via MC26.  As I said, all media that I watch in MC is stored on my NAS which has it's own security, so excluding those drives/folders is not a problem or time consuming.  You have not provided any of evidence that points to WinDef specifically, but expect me to waste time excluding a long list of filetypes, possibly exposing myself to security risks.  Again, the media source and program folders are excluded and that should be more than enough, especially since I didn't have any crashes with previous versions of MC using the same WinDef settings.  If you still insist on it being a WinDef issue, please provide something concrete that specifically points to Windows Defender.  This is a dead horse.

To be fair and going from experience, there is potential Windows Defender could be causing issues. The problem that might be happening, is with new major releases of MC, sometimes Windows Defender starts scanning it and causing issues (e.g. issues with MC starting slowly, closing slowly, using more resources, etc.) because it's doing some sort of scan and/or it's trying to submit MC's executables as samples to Microsoft's servers. Try excluding the folder MC26 is installed in, e.g. C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 26 and see if anything changes.

Thanks, but as pointed out the three recommended application related folders and media source drive folders were already excluded.  This isn't my first upgrade of MC.  Thanks for the post though.

Since you're pretty sure our suggestions aren't right, why don't you browse this thread and the linked thread to antivirus problems in order to get ideas.

https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,24031.0.html

You have a strange problem, and it doesn't look like it's a problem with JRiver.

I have read the Taming Windows Defender tread in detail, many times.  It is long and confusing. I previously recommended that the post be edited to be more concise or that a new thread be created with specific suggestions.

I believe the recommendations are:

1) Exclude the JRiver folder in Program Files. That is all that is needed.

2) Excluding files with media types and/or media folders or other folders may speed up access times but has not been shown to increase stability.

It seems like the OP has done that.

Once again, I would recommend that a short and concise recommendation thread be created that contains those and only those recommendations. Otherwise, the current thread is just too confusing.

If there are other specific settings that JRiver recommends in Windows Defender, then those should also be included. However, I have not seen any evidence that there are other folders or file types that need to be excluded in the current version of Windows 10.

Thanks Matt for a pointer to madVR.  I did see one thing that mentioned madVR and took steps to correct by resetting and reinstalling my settings.bin and other files under the plugin directory.  I didn't have any issues with madVR under MC25 though.  If my changes including resetting paging location don't resolve the issue, I will remove and re-install MC26 next.  Then let it add the madVR plugin component again too.  madVR is something that I cannot do without.  PERIOD.  Having it (and LAV) integrated into JRiver MC is pretty much the only reason I used this product for years.  Worst case, I'll go back to MC25 and stop using 26 for now, but I can't do without madVR.  I'll check with madshi to see if he has any logging available on his end to enable to troubleshoot crashing.  Might as well turn anything on there that might help.  If it is madVR, I'm sure that he'll want to know.

As I said, I need madVR processing, so I'll leave that as a last resort.  I just finished watching my third movie without a crash since making the changes to paging.  I will keep watching various movies (real world testing) until I leave on vacation next week.  I'll report back if it fails or how many successful viewings I've had before leaving until February.  If all goes well, I'll chalk it up to the paging location change that I recently made and restored back.  If not, then I'll pursue other remedies including Red October standard.  If it still crashes at that point, then at least I'll know that it's not madVR and will delete MC26 and re-install.  Right now, I'm thinking/hoping that it's already resolved.

I'm sure that you realize that for most users, madVR might have started as, and remains, an excellent audiophile media player.  However, there are many, myself included, that only started using it as their main video software player on an HTPC to drive their theater.  A big reason for this was that it took a lot of the guesswork out of configuring the driver/renderer side of a video player.   Anyway, with the advent of UHD/4K and HDR/WCG, madVR is playing a huge role in bringing usable tone mapping of HDR into SDR especially for projectors.  The benefits are huge and such that I'd give up JRiver well before giving up madVR.  At some point, the latest test file changes will make their way into the standard madVR release and JRiver will pick these up by default.  This will make MC even more appealing to videophiles.

OK, I've watched several movies (BD and UHD) since restoring my paging space back the C-drive and under Windows size control without any crashes.

I'm feeling pretty confident that this has resolved the issue.  I'll be out of town until the Super Bowl, so not further real world testing or posting here will occur until I later in February.  Thanks for all of the suggestions and help.
