Path wrong on new PC
« on: February 17, 2020, 06:48:57 pm »

Hello,

I migrated to a new PC
When I restore the libraries from the backup
for a moment, the ratings show up as they should
but the path is different
and then it resets
the ratings are removed.
How can I fix this?

I was on another computer.
Is there a manual way to tell it the path is different or something?

This might help:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Moving_Files

I don't think this will help, I looked at it
the thing is

I made the backup on my other computer
and on the new computer
when I restore from backup
the changes take effect for a short time, few seconds
then go back to removing the ratings

do you see?

Hello mr Jim,

i am confused...
so
do i have to mess with anything on my other computer?

what exactly do i do on the new computer

the previous computers file path was D:\Music

now it's c:\users\username\Music\My New Music\

it loads the library from backup

it says file not found
and deletes the ratings..

do you understand my problem?

Try this ....

. Select all files, or select a few to try it on
. Right click ->Library Tools->Rename, Move and Copy Files
. Top left corner drop down -> Update database to point to a new location (no file rename, move or copy)
. Unselect Directories tickbox
. Unselect Filename tickbox
. Select Find and Replace tickbox
. Replace "D:\Music" with "c:\users\username\Music\My New Music\"

You should see a preview of the changes in the file list.

I personally map all my media to network drive … even if stored locally, I map that to network drive

Then if I move to new PC … I remap my media to network drive again (careful to use same drive letters and to preserve directory structure inside my media folders) then restore library from backup

I know its a bit too late for that now.  But one should plan for these things.

I had auto import on, and it was messing with the library.
It's fixed now.
Thanks.

I've said many times that Media Center should have the option to disable auto-import when restoring a library backup.
As it is now, you have to restore a backup and then hope you're quick enough to disable it so that it doesn't run and break things.

"quick enough" == 45 seconds.  Import a single file if that still isn't enough time.

I just don't see why "disable auto-import" isn't an option to prevent that from happening when restoring a backup on a new machine, or after a significant change in the library structure (e.g. moving to another drive).

You can disable it by importing at least one file.

I feel like we're talking about different things.
I'm talking about restoring an existing library to a new machine, or restoring a library to the same machine after significant file structure changes have been made.

Not the first-time scan on an empty library (which already has an option to be disabled).
