using MC with memory play back feature
« on: April 05, 2020, 12:27:51 pm »

Hi.  When using MC with the memory playback feature I am having an issue with playing files.  When a song plays it starts by playing a few seconds of the song, then re-starts and plays the entire track from the beginning. When it gets to the next track it does the same thing of playing a few seconds, and then re-starts and plays the entire track.  Any ideas on  a fix?  I have tried closing MC and re-starting. Also, re-starting the computer.

Thanks,

Bob

It has been a consistent issue for a few days, with different file types.  However.....as I just went to try several different file types to check on the file type.....I can't get it to replicate the problem......so maybe it has self corrected (if that is even possible)?  But please provide feedback if others have had this issue so I will know how to correct it if it occurs again. Thx!

I have had the problem when putting a single file in memory, not when doing the whole album. I have been able to correct it by changing the various buffering times, but do not remember the details.  It seems like slow load times from disk can sometimes cause the problem. I would experiment with different prebuffering and play silence settings and, if you have slow disk access, try loading from a SSD or the system disk rather than a NAS or usb drive.  The larger the file, the more it would be to what you are seeing.  DSD are usually pretty large.  You can also try loading the whole album into memory, unless the album is very large.   Sorry I do not remember the details, but I have seen the same problem in the past.

Thanks for the input.  I do load the entire album. If you can recall, should I increase or decrease the buffering times?

Thanks again,

Bob

If you're loading a whole album and it's something like a SACD ISO, that *could* do it. It also depends on if you're using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of MC as well, because with both there's a limit (with a smaller limit with 32-bit if I recall correctly).

It almost sounds like it's trying to load the album into memory, but it hits the limit and drops out of memory playback mode.

For DSD it makes a difference to load full file into memory or decoded file into memory.  Load decoded file into memory could take very long for weak CPU's. How much memory do you have? 4GB will be for some DSD track's not enough.

The memory limit is 2 GB on 32bit and  16 GB on 64 bit (23.0.61 release notes), depending on how much memory is available on your system.  I am not sure what it does if it exceeds those limits.  There is also a limit of  30 tracks.  If it exceeds the track limit,  it drops back to normal playback.  All of these limits changed when the new options were added and the Wiki, unfortunately, does not document the new limits and fallback positions.

You can watch the load with the task manager and see if it goes up and then comes back down before playing. If so, you reached a limit and it defaults to normal playback.

As I remember, when loading the full album into memory it is suppose to  load the whole album before playing, so it should not play anything before loading. When loading a single track, it can start before the full track is loaded.   Unfortunately, I do not currently have access to the system that I changed the buffering on, but that should not matter on loading a full album.

I would try loading single tracks into memory and watching task manager when doing that.  And, watch task manager when loading a full album. That might give you some insight into the problem.
