export to device with rating?
« on: March 05, 2022, 02:07:56 pm »

Hi. I notice that if I export music to a device using the Drives and Devices, the rating is included in the exported music file if I choose the OGG format, but isn't included if I choose the MP3 format. Is there a way to include the rating in the export for MP3?

Explore Library Tools on our wiki.  It's likely that your metadata is only stored in MC's database, not in the file.  You can change that.

Thanks. Yes, only stored in the library. I didn't want to store tags in the file because then every time I change a tag, the file changes and is backup again. That causes a back up to the cloud, in my case, and my upload speed isn't great.

Since the file has to be converted from ALAC to MP3, is there any way to have the rating tag added to the converted MP3 file without having the rating tag written to the source ALAC file?

When converting to OGG, the rating is written tot he file, so why not when converting to MP3?

Thanks.

OK, more info. @JimH, I did what you suggested. I took one song and used the Library Tools to write the tags to the file. I verified the RATING tag was written to the file using VLC.

I then deleted the converted MP3 file from the device export and did a Recheck Sync, which showed the file in the in the queue. I synced, and the MP3 file was created. Unfortunately, no rating tag in the newly converted MP3 file, at least according to VLC or Picard.

Disable the conversion cache, or else a new file won't be created.
