MC9 won't install
« on: November 29, 2002, 07:25:05 am »

I've tried to install MC9 9.0.84 beta three times now.  Once with MJ8 Plus 8.0.388 already installed (I'm an MJ8 user with a MJ7 license) and once with a clean install on my main computer that I do most of my A/V work on and once on my music server.  I've copied the system info from my main machine below.  The music server is an old cyrix machine running WinME.

All three times the install box comes up.  The progress bar gets almost all the way to the end and it stops and gives me the following message:

"Errors encountered while performing the operation look at the information window for more details"

No info window pops up.  I noticed that it does create a MJ8 backup folder, however.  Any help for me?

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.388
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: AMD Athlon 1199 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 282 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106

Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106

you might want to make sure your c:\windows\temp folder is empty.

and in IE, do Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete files.  This can take several minutes.  It's an IE bug.

Sorry, guys.  Neither suggestion worked.  Same error message as before.  I have gone ahead and purchased MC9 - I've got way to much invested in this to bail to another product now.  Plus, I like want I see coming down the road for MC.  Keep trying - I'm out of ideas.

Disk space?

Which OS are you installing on?  You mention Windows ME, but your info says Windows XP.

What build of MJ are you using?  9.0.84 is available in the thread at the top here.

Yes I rebooted.

I have 2 30 gig hardrives on my main system with over 40 gig free and a 120 gig hd on my music server with 80 gig free.

When I did the clean install on my primary system, I removed the J River directory.

Please read my orignal post carefully.  You have asked questions that are clearly answered in my original post.  I'm using MC9 9.0.84.
My primary system uses WinXP.
My music server uses WinME.

It isn't clear.  Please provide details for the machine you're having trouble with.  Or are you saying you have trouble with both?

Computer #1 - primary system

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.388
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: AMD Athlon 1199 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 523 MB, Free - 298 MB
OS: Microsoft Windows XP  Workstation 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build 2600)

Internet Explorer: 6.0.2800.1106
ComCtl32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shlwapi.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
Shell32.dll: 6.00.2800.1106
wnaspi32.dll: Internal ASPI Layer

The above system has had 4 failed installs now.
Install #1 - MJ8 still installed
Install #2 - clean install with J River directory removed
Install #3 - Window temp file cleaned out
Install #4 - IE internet cache cleared out

Computer #2 - music server

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.388
Install Path: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\

CPU: Cyrix Unknown 236 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 163 MB, Free - 45 MB
Resource Info: System - 65 %, GDI - 78 %, User - 65 %
OS: Microsoft Windows Me

Internet Explorer: 5.50.4134.0100
ComCtl32.dll: 5.50.4134.100
Shlwapi.dll: 5.50.4134.100
Shell32.dll: 5.50.4134.100
wnaspi32.dll: 2, 0, 0, 0 , ASPI for WIN32 DLL, Copyright © Adaptec 1995
Aspi32.sys: N/A

The above system had one failed install with MJ8 installed.

For both systems, on every install, I get the same error message:

"Errors encountered while performing the operation look at the information window for more details"

Is this sufficently clear?

Yes they are networked with a router.

I just re-downloaded MJ8.  The re-install went without a hitch.  Updated the license to the MC9 one that I purchased today.

BTW, as I stated before, install box comes up.  The progress bar gets almost all the way to the end and it stops and gives me the following message:

"Errors encountered while performing the operation look at the information window for more details"

No info window pops up.  I noticed that it does create a MJ8 backup folder, however.

Having just reinstalled MJ8, I'm assuming that after the initial install box with the progress bar is through that the accept license screen should be next as with the MJ8 install.  The accept license screen never comes up.

Hmm.  MJ8 downloads and installs just fine.  My first download and failed install of MC9 was with v9.0.83.  I saw v9.0.84 so I tried that - same result.  Several times.

I'll try to download again but I don't think it will matter.  Don't you guys know what might generate the error message and why the mysterious information window doesn't appear?

Tried again.  This time the same error message came up again.  I closed that dialog box.  The Media Jukebox Setup box with the progress bar was still there.  To me it looks like the bar has gone all the to the right.  In other words, like it has finished.  As suggested, I waited.  For 40 minutes I waited.  Nothing.  It just hangs there.  Windows Task Manager status says that it is "Running."

Mike, do you think we'd hide it from you if we knew what was wrong?

The fact that you have the same problem on two machines suggests that it could be some other software running or something unusual about your configuration.  Do you have your security defense shields set high?  Virus checker, firewall, etc.

Do I think you'd hide anything from me?  You're kidding, right?  Of course you wouldn't hide anything.

Look, I simply mean that you guys coded the program including the error messages.  I've told you exactly at what point in the install that this occurs.  Surely you can narrow it down to some degree.  Your error message refers to an information window that never appears - what's that all about?  Who is responsible for the install program?  Can't they help out?  I worked tech support for a software company and the programmer responsible for the install program had a version of the install that would log the install to a file that could be read.

I've told you that I've downloaded and installed MJ8 without problem.  What's inherently different about the MC9 install that would cause it hang on my system when the MJ8 install does not?

Since this morning I've downloaded two different software packages (from different companies) and both installed and run w/o problems.  In fact, this is the first problem downloading and installing on either system since I built them over a year ago.

I don't have my security defense shields set high.  I don't run a firewall and norton is my AV software.

I'm Just a user (for a few years) but i am stumped.

the only thing else i can think of is MJ is trying to overwrite an already loaded\running file and it just sets there.

The error message may be a Windows message.  I don't recognize it.

Try uninstalling the virus checker.  Stop any other programs you can.

Something about the two machines is unusual.  We're not seeing this problem commonly.

I know it's frustrating for you, but we really don't know.

I do work for JRiver.  KingSparta was helping because he wanted to.

Again, why would MJ8 install just fine and MC9 won't?  Are the two install programs basically the same or very different?  There's got to be a clue there somewhere.

Mike I agree, and i feel your pain and i wish we could reproduce this i don't know of any reports like yours.

Maybe there is something dif how MC9 is installing, the problem is where is it getting stuck and MJ8 is not.

I think we are all wondering what the problem is
