TiVo Recording
« on: December 07, 2003, 01:01:37 am »

Hello everyone I'm thinking about getting a non TiVo standalone digital video recorder, but I want to be able to watch the video it records through my computer by hooking up an ethernet cord to it.  Do any of you know any models that will allow me to do this, and also will I be able to watch the video transferred or by live feed on MediaCenter's builtin TiVo/DVR/i don't really know what it is function.

Right now I'm looking at:
Panasonic DMR-E80H
Pioneer DVR-510H

Also I would highly suggest returning back to the 16x16 system tray icon that was in early versions of 9.0 and 9.1 that didn't have the remnants of the pause, forward, backward, and stop button in black in the gray part of the icon.  This new version looks very cluttered and ugly actually oogley is a better word since it is 2 in the morning.

You might look at some of the TiVo forums to find out how people are archiving their recorded shows.

Actually, I was thinking about other TiVO forums... that talk about archiving TiVO content.

Hey Frank!!

I'm a regular over at the TivoCommunity!!  Come on over...:)

Comment to your questions relative to TiVo (one of my favorite toys):

1.  Streaming and sharing of VIDEO to/from TiVo is only enabled between 2 or more Tivo's via ethernet in your home.  You will need to also buy the Home Media Option (HMO).  Note that you can use MEDIA CENTER to broadcast music to your TiVo from your PC...and play on your Home Theater System (very nice option!). ->  I can see all my MC9.1 playlists on my TV in my living room...very cool!!

2.  You can do a video capture using the video output from TiVo, but not a good option IMO.

3.  You can explore other "video extraction" techniques...but these are frowned upon at the TiVoCommunity; you will not get much help there on this topic (other sites do exist ;)).  You will probably want to stay away from Series2 (newest) machines and the kernel is locked down tight. Series I boxes allow more convenient access  to the popular hacks...

I love my Tivo, I have HMO also, and use MC9 (10?) to serve up all my playlists to it as well.

It's HUGELY better than the lame "Tivo Desktop" software.

Series 1 boxes allow more hacking, but can't support HMO, for those of you unfamiliar with Tivos.

Tivos + MC9 rock.
