Digital Camera ~ Aquire Images
« on: August 11, 2003, 12:13:55 am »

I have a Kodak LS443 camera. It connects to the PC via a "docking station" which connects to the PC via USB. The docking station also keeps the camera's batteries charged up.

So, while it just sits there, it charges. Press abutton on the docking station and the camera announces it's prescence and is duly added to "My Computer", but as a Hard Disc Drive (Volume label - LS443 Zoom Digital Camera), not Removable Storage, and MC simply cannot autodetect it's prescence.
Now, I've chosen not to install Kodak's "Easyshare" software, but if it was installed, it could launch when the camera logs on and display thumbnails.
I'm wondering if it might be possible to make "KodakCCS.exe" which appears to be the system service that's listening out for the camera, launch MC instead?
oorrr...
I'm wondering if it's possible for MC to spot the camera in the HDD list if it's there when I press MC's "aquire" button?
oorrr...
Am I just going to have to keep doing this the long way for the forseeable future?

I've more or less already accepted option 3, but thought there's no harm in asking:)

I assume that you mean that the drive does not show up in the "aquire from" list in the "Aquire Images" window? Hmmm... bummer...

You can always use the My Comptuer view to view the files and then do a rename of the folder in which they are currently to where they should be aquired to... A bit circuitous, but it'll work for the time being!

Does Windows see it as a removable drive or not? There may be a problem with your driver installation then... :(

I believe that only very recent versions of MC 9.1 will work.  I'm not certain.  What version do you have?

Marko,

The short answer to your problem is this:  Kodak's camera drivers choose to present the device as a hard drive vice a removable storage.  This is because they use the PTP model instead of the USB-MSDC model.  OK...  so that's probably greek to you (as it mostly is to me!).  But it means that MC doesn't recognize the camera at all.  I wonder if JRiver will ever rectify this, but I'd guess it's probably a bit of work!

The current solution is to use the WIA drivers for the camera.  Windows XP has the appropriate ones built in - you just need to update your driver, choose "install from a list or specific location", "Don't search.  I will choose the driver to install.", and select "Digital Still Camera".  Once this is done, your camera will show up as a "Scanners and Cameras" device because it will be using the WIA drivers instead of the PTP or USB-MSDC.

Well, this would all be a very happy ending, except for one small detail:  JRiver hasn't fully implemented WIA support with their acquire function.  What this means is that you'll need to manually choose "acquire" from within MC, instead of being able to choose an action from the pop-up dialogue box you'll see when you first connect your camera.  If you use other products (Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc.), you'll see what I mean as they'll be listed in the actions.  In all fairness, I understand that it's not the simplest of matters to register your software for WIA events.

I hope full WIA support or PTP support will be included someday soon.  Until then, WIA drivers offer an OK workaround - even though it doesn't pass the "wife test".

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Jim,

What has changed recently?  I haven't seen anything new - except that a few builds ago there was a MediaCenter WIA event (that didn't work).  I recently reinstalled the OS and the WIA event is now gone.

sraymond, thnx for the help there. tried your suggestion and here's what I got....
after pressing the button on the docking station, the camera shows up in device manager under "imaging devices" but with the yellow exclamation mark beside it. The problem, according to windows goes thus....

Location 0 (KODAK EasyShare LS443 Zoom

Quote
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

You need to restart your computer before the changes you made to this device will take affect.

I restarted, and the error persisted. I used the original drivers uninstaller, then restarted. The error persists.
I wondered if I used the usb cable to connect the camera directly (bypassing the docking station) it might work, but decided that that was more hassle than hitting the button on the docking station and then browsing to it using MC's "My Computer". I have gone back to the Kodak's "comunication" software.
Interestingly, the camera is added in "imaging devices" in device manager, but shows as a HDD in windows' "My Computer".

I'm currently using MC 9.1 release .226

Marko,

I think the camera will show as an "Imaging devices", regardless of what driver (PTP, USB-MSDC, or WIA) is loaded.

The fact that the camera is showing as a "Hard Disk Drives" leads me to believe you still have the PTP drivers installed.

What happened when you went to update the driver?  Could you choose "Digital Still Camera"?  What is the current driver listed?  You might try "Uninstall" (vice "Update Driver") in the Device Manager - but I can't imagine why Update Driver won't work.

Again, if you don't get the camera to show up as "Scanners and Cameras" on My Computer, you don't have the WIA drivers installed.

Let me know if I can be of any more help.  You might also want to check the newsgroup rec.photo.digital.  This is where I learned of the difference between driver classes.  There's a Bill Jackson (from Kodak) who answered my question specifically.

Scott, I've been using the Kodak drivers for ages, but since you linked here from over there, I thought I'd have another look.

No change from before :(

Yes, I can upgrade the drivers and choose "still image camera" and yes, the wia drivers installed fine. I forget exactly, but under the WIA drivers' details, there were only three files mentioned, one was a 'usbscan' file, and the other two were 'php' files. Using these drivers, when the dock button is pressed, the camera is added to device manager (under imaging devices) with a yellow exclamation mark, the details of which are posted above. The camera never makes it as far as an appearance in "My Computer" using these drivers.
Makes no difference whether the "KodakCSS" service is disabled or automatic.

Once again, I've gone back to the Kodak drivers and my MC "favourites" entry that points to the camera's memory card.

It would be nice if this could be made to work. You've no idea how irritating that camera icon in the action window is atm. It simply serves as a loud and large reminder of the fact it doesn't work for me. Makes me long for the ability to choose what does or doesn't show in there. ATM, given the choice, that "aquire" icon would be one of the first to go!!! :D

I used to think USB was the greatest thing since sliced-bread...  but I have certainly had my fair-share of problems with USB devices.  About all I can suggest is something a little radical - a bit of registry editing.  I don't believe it can hurt you too bad, even if it goes awry, but I definately recommend you make a backup of the registry first.

Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB and you will see a bunch of Vid_xxxx&Pid_xxxx entries.  Find the one (there should be only one, but you never know?)  that relates to your camera.  Mine is:

Don't expect the Vid and Pid numbers to be the same.  Anyway...  find the right one and delete it.  Then reconnect the camera and see if you can install the WindowsXP WIA drivers again.

I don't really understand all the Vid/Pid stuff - I just know that I've had to delete them to get a clean installation of USB drivers.

The yellow exclamation point is the devil himself!

Let me know if it works...
