XMLTV for a great TV guide
« on: January 08, 2004, 06:38:46 pm »

There is maybe a very good solution to have on MC a useful and complete TV guide that could work for users anywhere around the World. Its XMLTV, an open source project that retrieves TV listings from various sources and saves it in a specified file format.

There is a video recorder called Bayond TV that use this technology at this moment. With this, you can select your country and can get the good TV guide for your place. There is some applications that can help developpers to import in the good format the TV guide...

Maybe you could look at this page for more infos...

Hi KingDodo,

I've looked at it, but for various reasons it is not feasible to put in MC.

Thanks,

There IS a XMLTV plugin for MC. See JHC's beta plugin at:

Sounds like the 'ugly legality beast' has reared it's ugly head once again.

If we had control over the web pages displayed in MC we could chose to use this or whatever without a question legalities . . . .  no?

Our concern is that the information may be being gathered in violation of copyright laws.  If so, we can't participate.  I honestly don't know, but we try to be careful when we're not sure.

As far as the UK plug in goes the XMLTV feed is provided by ananova news so I think in the UK it is legal...

I couldn't comment on the US data feeds...

Just go to View / Listings Management and check off the listings you want -- MyPIG will go get them. If people want, I could let you schedule listings updates.

I agree XMLTV is not the easiest to configure. But given that the configuration is generally done once and working with listings is a common activity, I wanted to tackle the viewing of listings, favorites, channel filters etc. first.

Thanks,

You will never have to configure XMLTV.

Just go to View / Listings Management and choose the days you want to download listings for.

MyPIG downloads and uses its own listings -- one XML per day. You don't need to get listings manually with XMLTV -- MyPIG will do it for you.

Fantastic plugin, Jon...it was exactly what I needed.

Scheduling updates would be great.  Do you have a "notify" list for when you update or do you do an "announce" here?

Thanks for the kind words.

If there's enough interest, I'll set up a separate notify list but for now, I'll announce here.

Thanks,

Jon

This plugin is awesome...  But I wanted to point out that while myPIG seems great for Mega-me, it cannot be integrated with Hairstyle.  This is the big problem with going the plugin vice built-in route.

OK...  here are a few suggestions/comments/questions:

1)  How about a button that automatically takes the schedule to *now*?

2)  How about a label showing which day is being viewed?

3)  How about a few buttons for easy navigation (like NextDay, PreviousDay)?  Though maybe you're looking for a clean interface, so this might not be worth the clutter.

4)  You have the channel number...  is it possible to have a double click change MC to TV Tuner tuned to that channel?  Is scheduling a record too hard?

5)  What does Filter do?  Is seems stuck on [No Filter].

Again, I think you've got a great plugin (I'd certainly put it in the top five!)  Thanks.

Again, all great suggestions. All things that i would like to see but i dont haved said here :)

Suggestion : Is there a way to make MyPig download the next day automaticly when you load MC ? Exemple, you have downloaded the program listing for next 7 days. When you have passed a day, another day is added on MyPig. It could be great that there is an option that MyPig could download automaticly the listing for this day.

Maybe something like this but more useful. An option that can make MyPig detect if you have the listing for the days showed on it. In the Listing management of MyPig, you have many days (here 12). If i have selected 3 days and download the programs for it, when theses 3 day will be passed, MyPig will tell you a message on MC start like there is no listing for the day. So, instead of saying this, why it could not download automaticly the programs for the day (if you have checked the option)...

Thanks

Thanks guys,

These were all great suggestions and really all sort of basic things to make the plugin more usable.

I'll try to get to them all -- will take a little time as my day job is keeping me fairly busy at the moment, but I appreciate your taking the time to write!
